Chapter 1 - The Mask Slips

Daniel stared at me, his jaw trembling.
The silence in the grand foyer was so heavy it felt like it might crush us all.
"Mom?" he asked again, his voice cracking with a mixture of confusion and horror.
Vanessa stepped back, her designer heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.
Her eyes darted frantically between my wet, gray-streaked wig and Daniel’s pale face.
She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

The bucket she had just thrown at me lay forgotten by my muddy boots.
Dirty water dripped from my chin, landing with quiet splats on the pristine tiles.
I didn't break eye contact with her.
I reached up slowly, pulling the cheap, dark wig from my head.
My natural silver hair tumbled down, soaked and clinging to my neck.
I wiped the last streaks of garden soil from my cheek with the back of my hand.
"Yes, Daniel," I said, my voice eerily calm.
"It's me."
Daniel took a step down the stairs, his eyes wide.
"What... what is going on here?" he demanded.
He looked at Vanessa, who was suddenly trembling like a fragile leaf in a hurricane.
"Daniel, wait, I can explain!" Vanessa cried out.
Her voice pitched up an octave, dripping with fake panic.
"This isn't what it looks like!"
"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Because it looks like you just dumped a bucket of mop water on a helpless elderly employee."
"She provoked me!" Vanessa screamed, pointing a manicured finger at my face.
"She was insolent, Daniel!"
"She refused to do her job and then she threatened to ruin our wedding!"
Daniel froze, looking torn.
His trusting nature was still desperately trying to find a logical explanation.
"Mom, why are you dressed like this?" he asked, pleading for sanity.
"Why would you do this?"
I reached into the deep pocket of the oversized housekeeper uniform.
My fingers wrapped around the small digital recorder.
"Because I needed you to see the truth, sweetheart," I told him gently.
I pulled the device out and held it up for both of them to see.
Vanessa’s face went from pale white to a sickly shade of gray.
"I needed you to see who you were bringing into our family," I continued.
I pressed the playback button.
The audio filled the quiet foyer, crystal clear.
“People like you should be grateful people like me even let you inside.”
It was Vanessa’s voice, dripping with pure venom and elitism.
Daniel gasped, taking another step down the stairs.
“Now scrub that floor. With your hands. Or I’ll make sure you never work in this city again.”
I stopped the recording.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Daniel stared at the woman he loved.
The polished glass illusion had finally shattered.
"Is that true, Vanessa?" Daniel asked.
His voice was terrifyingly quiet now.
"Did you really say those things?"
Vanessa burst into tears.
It was a performance worthy of an Oscar, complete with heavy sobs and trembling shoulders.
"Daniel, she set me up!" she wailed, rushing toward the stairs.
"She deliberately pushed me to the edge! I was just so stressed about the wedding planning!"
She reached out to grab his hand, but Daniel pulled away.
It was the first time I had ever seen him look at her with disgust.
"She didn't force you to treat a human being like garbage," Daniel said coldly.
"She didn't force you to throw dirty water on a woman you thought was defenseless."
"Daniel, please!" Vanessa begged, falling to her knees.
"Get up, Vanessa," I said firmly.
I peeled off the soaked uniform jacket and dropped it on the floor next to the bucket.
"You are embarrassing yourself."
She glared at me, her fake tears instantly vanishing.
The mask was fully off now.
"You evil, manipulative old hag," she spat at me.
"You planned this from the very beginning!"
"I planned nothing but an opportunity," I corrected her smoothly.
"You provided the character execution all by yourself."
Daniel walked down the remaining stairs and stood between me and his fiancée.
"The wedding is off," he said.
May you like
The words hung in the air, final and absolute.
"Pack your things and get out of this house."
