Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Two days passed in quiet mourning.
Daniel stayed in his room mostly, processing the betrayal.
I gave him space, knowing he needed to grieve the future he thought he was going to have.
On the third morning, the storm broke.
I was sitting in my home office, sipping black tea, when my phone began vibrating endlessly.
It was Eleanor, my closest friend and the vice-chair of my charity board.

"Have you seen social media?" Eleanor barked the moment I answered.
"Good morning to you too, Eleanor. No, I haven't."
"Turn on your tablet right now. You’re trending."
I sighed, setting my teacup down.
I opened my tablet and tapped on the browser.
My heart did a slow, heavy thump against my ribs.
Vanessa had posted a tearful, ten-minute video.
She was sitting in a dimly lit room, wearing absolutely no makeup, looking perfectly devastated.
The title read: The Dark Truth About the Whitmore Family.
I clicked play.
"Hi everyone," Vanessa choked out to the camera, wiping a nonexistent tear.
"I never thought I would have to make a video like this."
"But I have to speak my truth."
"Two days ago, my fiancé, Daniel Whitmore, called off our wedding."
"Not because we didn't love each other."
"But because his mother is a deeply disturbed, controlling woman who couldn't stand to see him happy."
I watched in morbid fascination as she spun a web of brilliant, unadulterated lies.
She claimed I had mentally tortured her for months.
She claimed the "housekeeper" incident was a cruel hazing ritual where I forced her to perform demeaning tasks to prove she was worthy of my son.
She even claimed I had poured the dirty water on myself in a psychotic rage just to frame her.
"She has all the money and power in the world," Vanessa sobbed into the lens.
"She threatened to destroy my life if I didn't leave quietly."
"But I won't be silenced."
"People need to know that behind the charity galas, Mrs. Whitmore is an absolute monster."
The video had over two million views.
The comments were a bloodbath.
Thousands of strangers were calling for my charity to be boycotted.
People were leaving death threats on our foundation's public pages.
The door to my office slammed open.
Daniel walked in, looking like he hadn't slept in days.
He was holding his phone, his knuckles white from gripping it so hard.
"Did you see it?" he asked, his voice shaking with fury.
"I'm watching it right now," I said calmly.
"Mom, she's destroying your reputation!"
"We have to issue a statement."
"We have to release the audio recording immediately to prove she's lying!"
I turned off the tablet and folded my hands on the desk.
"No," I said simply.
Daniel stared at me like I had lost my mind.
"No? Mom, they are calling you an abuser!"
"They are threatening to protest the annual gala this weekend!"
"Exactly," I smiled.
"Let them."
Daniel blinked. "I don't understand."
"Daniel, if we release the tape on the internet, it becomes a messy he-said, she-said."
"People will claim the audio is AI-generated, or edited."
"Vanessa will just play the victim harder."
"If we want to cut the head off the snake, we have to do it in person."
"We do it in public. Where she cannot hide."
I picked up my phone and dialed the number for my PR director.
"What are you doing?" Daniel asked.
"I'm setting a trap," I replied as the phone rang.

"Vanessa wants attention?"
"I'm going to give her the biggest stage in the city."
