Chapter 4 - The Public Spectacle

The Annual Whitmore Foundation Gala was the highlight of the city's social calendar.

Normally, it was an evening of champagne, silent auctions, and celebrating our philanthropic work.

This year, thanks to Vanessa's viral video, it was a circus.

News vans were parked three deep outside the grand hotel ballroom.

Protesters stood behind police barricades, holding signs that read Money Can’t Hide Abuse and Justice for Vanessa.

Inside, the atmosphere was incredibly tense.

My board members looked nervous, shooting me worried glances over their crystal flutes.

I stood at the top of the ballroom stairs, wearing my favorite emerald green gown.

I looked completely unbothered.

Daniel stood beside me in a sharp tuxedo, nervously adjusting his cuffs.

"Are you sure she's going to show up?" he muttered from the corner of his mouth.

"She can't resist," I whispered back.

"She thrives on the drama."

"Her video got her five minutes of fame, but crashing this gala will get her national news coverage."

As if on cue, a massive commotion erupted near the main entrance.

The heavy mahogany doors were thrown open.

Flashbulbs practically blinded the room as the press surged forward.

There she was.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, wearing a stunning white dress that looked suspiciously like a simplified wedding gown.

She looked like a tragic, beautiful martyr entering the lion's den.

Security guards moved to block her, but I raised my hand.

"Let her in," my voice echoed through the microphone I had clipped to my dress.

The entire ballroom fell completely silent.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Hundreds of wealthy guests turned to watch the drama unfold.

Vanessa walked slowly into the center of the room, flanked by two reporters she had obviously brought with her.

She looked up at me, a triumphant, malicious gleam in her eyes.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Vanessa said loudly, ensuring the cameras caught every word.

"I know I am not welcome here."

"But I came to demand a public apology."

"You abused me, you humiliated me, and you tried to silence me!"

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.

I slowly descended the velvet-lined staircase, my gaze locked onto hers.

"An apology?" I asked, my voice echoing smoothly over the sound system.

"Yes," she demanded, her chin held high.

"You destroyed my engagement to a man I love deeply."

"You treated me like dirt because I don't come from your wealthy, snobby world!"

She was playing the crowd perfectly.

I stopped three feet away from her.

"Vanessa, I think there is a misunderstanding," I said politely.

"I didn't treat you poorly because you lack wealth."

"I tested you because my staff came to me in tears regarding your behavior."

"Lies!" Vanessa yelled, pointing a finger at me.

"You dressed up as a maid to torture me!"

"You threw dirty water on yourself to frame me!"

"Everyone online knows the truth!"

I smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile.

It was the smile of a chess player who just cornered the king.

"The internet only knows the story you told them, Vanessa," I said gently.

"But I think it's time my guests—and the press—saw the whole picture."

I gestured to the AV technician at the back of the room.

The lights in the ballroom suddenly dimmed.

The massive projector screen behind the stage, meant for showing our charity's yearly progress, flared to life.

Vanessa frowned, her confidence finally wavering.

"What are you doing?" she snapped.

May you like

"I'm giving you exactly what you wanted," I replied.

"Complete transparency."
