Chapter 7 – The Child Beneath the Floor

Chapter 7 – The Child Beneath the Floor
Nathan raised one finger, signaling for silence.
The frightened voice came again.
"Please..."
"Don't tell him I'm here."
Ryan slowly knelt beside the old hardwood floor.
He tapped each board with the handle of his flashlight.

Most of them sounded solid.
One did not.
A hollow echo drifted through the room.
Ryan looked up.
"There's a space underneath."
Nathan remembered something.
"When I was a kid, my father used to disappear into this study for hours."
"I thought he was working."
Ryan shined his flashlight across the floor.
"Maybe he wasn't."
Nathan dropped to one knee.
His fingers brushed across the wood.
Then he felt it.
A tiny metal ring hidden between two floorboards.
He hooked his finger through it and pulled.
Nothing happened.
Ryan joined him.
Together they pulled harder.
With a loud groan, a section of the floor slowly lifted.
Cold air rushed upward.
A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.
Nathan aimed his flashlight down the steps.
"Hello?"
"It's okay."
"My name is Nathan."
No answer came.
Only quiet breathing.
Ryan stepped forward.
"I'll go first."
Nathan shook his head.
"If there's a child down there, they don't know you."
"They know my family."
Without waiting for permission, Nathan began climbing down.
Each step creaked beneath his weight.
The air smelled old.
Dust coated the walls.
At the bottom sat a small underground room.
Shelves lined one side.
An old desk occupied the other.
Blankets covered the floor.
Someone had lived there.
Recently.
Nathan slowly looked around.
Then he saw movement.
A little boy crouched behind a wooden cabinet.
He couldn't have been older than six.
His blond hair hung over frightened blue eyes.
His clothes were dirty.
His cheeks were pale.
He clutched a stuffed rabbit against his chest.
Nathan slowly knelt.
"It's okay."
"I'm not going to hurt you."
The boy didn't move.
Instead, he whispered one question.
"Are you Marcus?"
Nathan's heart broke.
"No."
"I'm Nathan Pierce."
The little boy studied his face.
"My mommy said if I ever met a man named Nathan..."
"...I should trust him."
Nathan swallowed hard.
"What is your name?"
The child hesitated.
Then he answered.
"My name is Charlie."
Nathan froze.
Ryan looked at him in disbelief.
Charlie.
The name Lily had remembered.
The mysterious "C."
Nathan carefully stepped closer.
"How long have you been hiding here?"
Charlie looked toward the ceiling.
"I don't know."
"I counted twenty-seven sleeps."
Ryan quietly did the math.
Nearly a month.
Nathan couldn't believe it.
"Who brought you food?"
Charlie pointed toward a small cooler in the corner.
"A lady."
"She came every night."
Nathan's pulse quickened.
"What did she look like?"
Charlie smiled for the first time.
"She smelled like flowers."
"And she always cried before she left."
Nathan already knew the answer.
"Was her name Sarah?"
Charlie nodded.
"She said she was keeping a promise."
Ryan searched the underground room.
Everything had been carefully arranged.
Bottled water.
Canned food.
Children's books.
Fresh batteries.
Blankets.
Whoever prepared the room had expected Charlie to stay alive for weeks.
Nathan noticed framed photographs hanging on one wall.
Every picture showed Charlie growing older.
From infancy...
To toddler...
To the frightened little boy standing before him.
Nathan stared at the earliest photograph.
His breath caught.
Charlie was wrapped in the exact same blue baby blanket Owen had arrived with.
Ryan stepped beside him.
"That's not a coincidence."
Nathan slowly nodded.
"No."
"It isn't."
Charlie tugged gently on Nathan's sleeve.
"I have something."
Nathan looked down.
The little boy reached inside his stuffed rabbit.
A hidden zipper opened along its back.
Charlie pulled out a folded envelope.
"My mommy said to give you this."
Nathan carefully accepted it.
The paper was dry.
Protected.
Across the front, in Sarah's handwriting, were six words.
Only after you find Charlie.
Nathan slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
The first line made his knees weaken.
Nathan, if Charlie is alive, then Marcus hasn't won yet.
Nathan continued reading.
Charlie is not my son.
He is not Marcus's son.
He is the child your father spent years trying to protect.
Ryan looked over Nathan's shoulder.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan kept reading.
The truth began before Lily was ever born.
Everything Marcus did was part of a plan that started years earlier.
You must never let Charlie fall into Marcus's hands.
If he does, Father's final secret dies with him.
Nathan reached the bottom of the page.
There was one final sentence.
The answers are hidden inside Saint Matthew's Church.
Ryan immediately remembered the church bells from the recording.
"It wasn't random."
Nathan nodded.
"Sarah was trying to lead us there."
Suddenly, Charlie's face turned white.
"He found us."
Nathan frowned.
"Who?"
Charlie pointed toward the ceiling.
"He whistles."
At first, Nathan heard nothing.
Then...
Three slow notes echoed through the silent mansion.
The exact same whistle Lily had heard outside her hospital window.
Charlie dropped the stuffed rabbit.
His entire body began shaking.
"That's him."
"He's here."
A loud crash exploded upstairs.
Glass shattered.
Someone had forced open the back entrance.
Ryan grabbed his radio.
Only static answered.
The radio was dead.
Footsteps echoed through the house.
Heavy.
Confident.
Deliberate.
Nathan looked at Charlie.
"You stay behind me."
Charlie grabbed Nathan's hand with surprising strength.
His tiny voice trembled.
"No."
"You don't understand."
Nathan looked down.
Charlie was crying.
"He doesn't want me."
Nathan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Charlie whispered the words Sarah had apparently warned him never to say aloud.
"He wants..."
"...what's inside my necklace."
Nathan looked around Charlie's neck for the first time.
Beneath his worn sweater hung a small silver pendant.
It looked almost identical to the charms Owen and Ethan were wearing.
Except this one was engraved with a single letter.
C.
Before Nathan could react, the lights suddenly flickered back on.
At the top of the staircase, a tall figure dressed in black slowly began clapping.
The stranger smiled as he looked directly at Charlie.
"There you are."
"I've been looking for you for a very long time."
Nathan raised his pistol.
"Don't move."
The man laughed.
"I'm not here for you, Doctor."
May you like
His eyes never left Charlie.
"I'm here to take my son home."
