Chapter 12 – The Fire Alarm Trap

Chapter 12 – The Fire Alarm Trap

The shrill fire alarm echoed through every hallway.

Red emergency lights flashed across the pediatric wing.

Water poured from the ceiling sprinklers.

Nurses hurried frightened patients toward the exits.

Parents grabbed blankets and bags without asking questions.

The entire hospital dissolved into confusion.

Nathan looked up the instant the alarm sounded.

Ryan reached for his radio.

Only static answered.

"The signal's jammed."

Nathan's expression hardened.

"This isn't a fire."

"It's a distraction."

Ryan nodded.

"They're making us look the wrong way."

Nathan took off running toward the pediatric floor.

Lily heard the footsteps before she saw the men.

They moved too calmly.

Too confidently.

Real hospital workers were rushing.

These two weren't.

One of them looked directly at her.

He smiled.

"There she is."

Lily's heart pounded.

She turned and ran.

"Uncle Nathan!"

Her tiny voice disappeared beneath the screaming alarms.

She raced through the hallway.

Her socks slipped across the wet floor.

Behind her, the fake nurses broke into a sprint.

"Don't let her reach the elevators."

One of them pulled a syringe from his pocket.

The clear liquid inside caught the flashing red light.

Inside the twins' room, Emily Harper heard Lily's cry.

She rushed into the hallway.

"Lily!"

The little girl threw herself toward Emily.

"They're bad people!"

Emily turned just as one of the disguised men lunged forward.

He shoved Emily into the wall.

Her shoulder slammed against the metal handrail.

Pain shot through her arm.

The second man reached for Lily.

Emily grabbed a nearby IV pole.

With all her strength, she swung it.

The metal pole crashed against the attacker's wrist.

The syringe flew across the floor.

The man cursed.

Emily pulled Lily behind her.

"Run!"

Lily didn't hesitate.

She sprinted toward the stairwell.

Nathan burst out of the elevator at the exact moment Lily reached the hallway.

"Uncle Nathan!"

She collided with him.

Nathan immediately scooped her into his arms.

"It's okay."

"I'm here."

Lily clung to his neck.

"They're coming."

Nathan looked up.

The two disguised men froze.

One of them smiled.

"You should've stayed home, Doctor."

Nathan carefully handed Lily to Ryan.

"Take her."

Ryan nodded.

"Not without you."

The first attacker rushed forward.

Nathan sidestepped him.

Years of surgical precision translated into perfect timing.

He drove his shoulder into the man's chest.

Both men crashed through a supply cart.

Medical equipment scattered across the hallway.

The second attacker pulled a pistol.

Before he could aim, Ryan tackled him from behind.

The gun slid beneath a hospital bed.

Patients screamed.

Doctors pushed everyone toward safety.

Security guards rushed onto the floor.

The attackers realized they were losing control.

One of them reached into his pocket.

He pressed a small black button.

A loud explosion shook the building.

Windows shattered across the emergency wing.

Smoke poured into the hallway.

Nathan looked toward the ceiling.

"What was that?"

Ryan listened carefully.

"Parking garage."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"The cars."

Outside, flames spread through the lower level of the parking structure.

Several vehicles burned fiercely.

Police officers rushed to move nearby ambulances.

Firefighters arrived within minutes.

The explosion had created exactly what Marcus wanted.

A second distraction.

Across the street, Marcus Kane watched through binoculars from the roof of an abandoned office building.

He lowered the binoculars slowly.

"They're getting smarter."

Daniel Cross stood beside him.

"You promised no children would be hurt."

Marcus never looked away from the hospital.

"I promised many things."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You lied."

Marcus smiled faintly.

"I've survived because I lie better than everyone else."

Daniel looked toward the hospital entrance.

"They stopped your men."

Marcus nodded.

"They were expendable."

Daniel stared at him.

"You sent them knowing they'd be caught."

Marcus finally turned.

"They served their purpose."

"What purpose?"

Marcus pointed toward the smoke rising from the parking garage.

"Nobody noticed the third team."

Daniel's face changed.

"There was another team?"

Marcus smiled.

"There always is."

Meanwhile...

In the chaos beneath the hospital...

A maintenance worker pushed a laundry cart through the service corridor.

No one stopped him.

No one questioned him.

Inside the cart, hidden beneath clean sheets, lay a large black duffel bag.

The man reached the neonatal intensive care unit.

He looked both ways.

The hallway was empty.

Everyone had rushed toward the explosion.

He quietly opened the duffel bag.

Inside was another hospital uniform.

A forged identification badge.

And a small handheld scanner.

He stepped inside the nursery.

Only one nurse remained.

She looked exhausted.

"Can I help you?"

The man smiled warmly.

"Routine equipment inspection."

She nodded.

"Be quick."

He scanned the room.

Owen.

Ethan.

Both babies slept peacefully.

He quietly removed a tiny tracking device from his pocket.

He slipped it beneath Ethan's mattress.

Then another beneath Owen's crib.

The nurse never noticed.

He smiled to himself.

"The boss will know exactly where they go."

He zipped the duffel bag closed and walked away.

Back upstairs...

Nathan finally caught his breath.

Police officers had arrested both disguised attackers.

Ryan searched their pockets.

Nothing.

No identification.

No phones.

Professional.

Nathan looked at Lily.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded slowly.

Then her face suddenly turned pale.

"I forgot."

Nathan knelt beside her.

"What did you forget?"

Lily looked toward the rain-covered windows.

"I saw Mommy."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"When?"

"Before the fire alarm."

"She was outside."

"What did she do?"

Lily swallowed.

"She pointed at the entrance."

Nathan frowned.

"Why?"

Lily looked directly into his eyes.

"She wasn't warning me about the bad men."

Nathan felt his stomach tighten.

"Then what was she trying to tell you?"

Lily's voice trembled.

"There was another woman."

Nathan looked confused.

"What woman?"

"The woman standing beside Mommy."

Lily closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"They looked almost the same."

Ryan immediately froze.

"Almost the same?"

Lily nodded.

"They could've been sisters."

Nathan and Ryan exchanged stunned looks.

Ryan quietly whispered,

"Hannah."

Nathan nodded.

"Or..."

"...someone pretending to be her."

Before either man could say another word, Emily came running down the hallway holding a tablet.

"Nathan!"

"You need to see this."

She turned the screen toward him.

The hospital's security system had finally come back online.

A recording from fifteen minutes earlier filled the display.

The video showed Sarah standing outside the emergency entrance.

She was speaking urgently to a woman whose face was hidden beneath a hood.

Then Sarah handed the woman something wrapped in blue cloth.

Seconds later, Sarah ran toward the woods.

The hooded woman turned toward the camera for just an instant.

Nathan's breath caught.

Ryan stared in disbelief.

The woman's face was unmistakable.

It was the same woman from the old family photograph hidden inside John Pierce's journal.

The mysterious woman no one had been able to identify.

Across the bottom of the video, the timestamp revealed one final shocking detail.

The footage had been recorded...

six minutes after Sarah was supposedly rescued miles away by the elderly stranger.
