Chapter 10 – The Lie That Could Destroy Everything

Chapter 10 – The Lie That Could Destroy Everything
The underground chamber fell silent.
Nathan couldn't breathe.
Marcus kept the pistol aimed at Charlie.
The little boy stood frozen beside Locker 19.

Snow drifted down the narrow staircase behind Marcus.
His smile never faded.
"I told you."
"Charlie is your son."
Nathan stared at him.
"You're lying."
Marcus shrugged.
"Maybe."
"Maybe not."
Ryan quietly entered the chamber from the opposite staircase.
He stayed hidden behind a stone column.
His weapon remained raised.
Marcus hadn't seen him.
Not yet.
Nathan refused to take his eyes off Marcus.
"If Charlie were my son..."
"I would know."
Marcus laughed.
"Would you?"
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"I've never even met Charlie."
Marcus slowly took another step forward.
"That's because someone made sure you never would."
Nathan glanced at Charlie.
The boy looked terrified.
He didn't understand what Marcus was saying.
Nathan spoke softly.
"Charlie."
"Come here."
Marcus immediately cocked the pistol.
"One more step."
"And he dies."
Nathan stopped.
His pulse thundered in his ears.
Marcus pointed toward the envelope inside Locker 19.
"Pick it up."
Nathan didn't move.
"I said..."
"Pick it up."
Nathan slowly reached inside the locker.
He pulled out the thick envelope.
Years of dust covered its surface.
The seal remained intact.
Marcus smiled.
"Good."
"Now hand it to me."
Nathan looked at the old handwriting.
His father's handwriting.
The words suddenly felt heavier than paper.
Ryan slowly adjusted his position.
He had a clear shot.
But Charlie stood too close.
The risk was too great.
Nathan asked quietly, "Why?"
Marcus frowned.
"Why what?"
"Why spend eight years chasing one little boy?"
Marcus laughed again.
"You still don't understand."
"It was never about Charlie."
"It was always about what Charlie represents."
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
"My father knew something."
Marcus nodded.
"He knew everything."
"And he buried the truth before I could stop him."
Nathan looked down at the envelope.
"The answers are in here."
Marcus smiled.
"Exactly."
Without warning...
Charlie spoke.
"My mommy said you always lie."
Marcus's smile disappeared.
Charlie continued.
"She said bad people tell half the truth."
"They hide the other half."
Nathan slowly looked at the boy.
Marcus's finger tightened around the trigger.
"You should've stayed quiet."
Charlie didn't flinch.
"You killed Grace."
The room became deathly still.
Nathan looked at Marcus.
"You murdered her?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Charlie wiped away a tear.
"She tried to protect me."
Marcus sighed.
"She became a problem."
Nathan felt anger surge through his body.
"You murdered an innocent woman."
Marcus smiled coldly.
"I solved a problem."
At that exact moment...
Ryan fired.
The gunshot echoed through the chamber.
Marcus instinctively dove behind a stone pillar.
His bullet struck the ceiling instead.
Dust rained down.
Nathan grabbed Charlie.
"Run!"
Charlie sprinted toward the hidden staircase.
Ryan fired again.
Marcus's men rushed into the chamber from above.
Bullets shattered stone walls.
Nathan shoved the envelope inside his jacket.
"We have to get out."
Ryan nodded.
"This way!"
The three of them disappeared into a narrow tunnel branching off from the chamber.
Marcus shouted behind them.
"Don't let them escape!"
The tunnel was barely wide enough to walk through.
It smelled damp and ancient.
Nathan held Charlie's hand.
Ryan covered the rear.
Footsteps echoed behind them.
"They're gaining on us," Ryan warned.
Charlie suddenly stopped.
Nathan nearly collided with him.
"What is it?"
Charlie pointed toward the wall.
"There."
Nathan aimed his flashlight.
An old wooden door.
Almost invisible beneath years of dirt.
Charlie smiled.
"Sarah showed me."
Nathan pushed the door open.
A freezing gust of air rushed inside.
The tunnel exited into the forest behind the church.
Ryan laughed with relief.
"She planned every escape route."
Nathan looked back toward the church.
"Sarah expected this."
Miles away...
Sarah stumbled through the snow carrying the brass key.
Her vision blurred.
She had lost too much blood.
Every step became harder.
Finally...
She collapsed beside a frozen creek.
The brass key slipped from her hand.
She reached for it.
Her fingers couldn't move.
The world slowly faded.
Headlights appeared through the trees.
A pickup truck rolled to a stop.
An elderly man climbed out.
He rushed toward Sarah.
"Oh, my God."
He carefully checked her pulse.
Still alive.
He gently picked her up.
As he carried her toward the truck, something fell from her coat.
A folded photograph.
The man picked it up.
His eyes widened instantly.
The picture showed John Pierce.
The elderly man's face turned pale.
He whispered words no one else could hear.
"John..."
"What have you done?"
He placed the photograph into his pocket.
Then he drove away into the storm.
Back in the forest...
Nathan, Ryan, Rosa, and Charlie finally reached the waiting vehicles.
Police officers were treating the wounded.
The church stood surrounded by flashing emergency lights.
Marcus and his men had vanished.
Ryan leaned against his SUV.
"We lost him."
Nathan looked down at the unopened envelope.
"No."
"I think he lost."
Ryan smiled.
"You still have it."
Nathan nodded.
"For now."
Charlie tugged gently on Nathan's sleeve.
"Can we open it?"
Nathan stared at the seal.
His father's handwriting.
Eight years of secrets.
One envelope.
He slowly broke the wax seal.
Inside were several legal documents.
A DNA report.
Birth records.
And one handwritten letter.
Nathan unfolded the DNA report first.
His heartbeat quickened.
His hands began to shake.
Ryan looked over his shoulder.
"What is it?"
Nathan couldn't answer.
He simply handed Ryan the report.
Ryan read the first page.
His eyes widened.
"This..."
"...this can't be right."
Nathan looked at Charlie.
Then back at the report.
The DNA results proved one thing beyond any doubt.
Marcus Kane had been telling the truth about only one part.
Charlie was not his son.
But Marcus had lied about the rest.
Nathan wasn't Charlie's father either.
Charlie looked up at them with frightened blue eyes.
"If he's not my daddy..."
"...then who is?"
Before anyone could answer, Nathan unfolded his father's handwritten letter.
The very first sentence changed everything once again.
Nathan, if you're reading this, then the child you've been protecting isn't Charlie.
Nathan's blood ran cold.
He slowly looked toward the police SUV where Lily sat holding her baby brothers.
May you like
His father's next sentence confirmed his worst fear.
The child Marcus has wanted all these years... has been Lily.
