Chapter 1 – The Bracelet That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 – The Bracelet That Changed Everything
Nathan stared at the old silver bracelet in his trembling hand.
The engraving stole the air from his lungs.
Property of Sarah Carter. 2018.
He knew that bracelet.

He had given it to Sarah on her twenty-fifth birthday.
Their parents had died only months earlier.
Nathan had promised her she would never be alone again.
Instead, he had become the one who abandoned her.
A soft cry pulled him back to reality.
One of the twins stirred beneath the blankets.
Nathan immediately knelt beside the baby.
The infant's tiny fingers were ice cold.
His breathing was shallow.
Nathan checked the baby's pulse.
Weak.
Much too weak.
"Rosa, bring me the emergency warming kit."
Rosa hurried down the hallway without saying a word.
Nathan carefully examined the second baby.
His lips had already begun turning blue.
"Stay with me, little guy."
"You've made it this far."
"You are not giving up now."
Lily remained unconscious on the sofa near the fireplace.
A paramedic would have mistaken her for simply sleeping.
Nathan knew better.
Her body had reached dangerous hypothermia.
Every minute mattered.
He gently rubbed warmth back into her frozen hands.
That was when he noticed something tucked inside her coat pocket.
A folded envelope.
The paper was soaked.
Its edges had nearly dissolved.
Across the front, written in Sarah's unmistakable handwriting, were only three words.
For Nathan Only.
His heartbeat accelerated.
Seven years.
Seven years without seeing her handwriting.
Seven years believing she had chosen another life.
Nathan slowly unfolded the fragile letter.
Several sections had been destroyed by melting snow.
Only fragments remained.
Nathan...
...if Lily reaches you...
...Marcus knows...
...don't trust...
The rest had disappeared into blurred blue ink.
Nathan closed his eyes.
"No..."
"There has to be more."
He searched the envelope again.
A second piece of folded paper slipped onto the hardwood floor.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a birth certificate.
Nathan picked it up.
His eyes immediately found the father's name.
Marcus Kane.
Then he noticed something else.
The twins' birth certificates were missing.
Only Lily's remained.
His mind raced.
Why would Sarah send only one?
Where were the others?
The front door suddenly burst open.
Three paramedics rushed inside carrying medical equipment.
Nathan instantly switched into surgeon mode.
"Five-year-old female."
"Severe hypothermia."
"Possible frostbite."
"Two infant males."
"Both showing signs of cold stress and dehydration."
The lead paramedic looked surprised.
"You've already stabilized them."
Nathan nodded.
"Not enough."
"They need a hospital."
The children were carefully loaded onto stretchers.
Lily never opened her eyes.
Even unconscious, her tiny fingers refused to release the corner of the blanket protecting her brothers.
One paramedic smiled sadly.
"She's been taking care of them for a long time."
Nathan couldn't answer.
Because he knew it was true.
Two hours later.
Cascade Regional Medical Center.
Nathan refused to leave the pediatric intensive care unit.
The nurses quietly watched him through the glass.
They had never seen the famous heart surgeon look frightened.
He had performed impossible surgeries.
Tonight, three children terrified him more than any operating room ever had.
Dr. Emily Harper walked beside him.
She had known Nathan for over fifteen years.
"You should sit down."
"I'm fine."
She raised an eyebrow.
"You've said that five times."
"And none of us believes you."
Nathan handed her Sarah's damaged letter.
Emily carefully read the surviving words.
"This isn't an accident."
Nathan looked toward Lily's hospital room.
"No."
"It isn't."
Emily lowered her voice.
"You think Marcus did something."
Nathan answered without hesitation.
"I know he did."
Before Emily could respond, a nurse hurried down the hallway.
"Dr. Pierce."
"The little girl is awake."
Nathan reached Lily's bedside within seconds.
Her green eyes slowly opened.
Confusion filled her face.
Then fear.
She looked around the unfamiliar room.
"Where are my brothers?"
"They're safe," Nathan answered gently.
"They're right next door."
Tears immediately rolled down her cheeks.
"I couldn't carry them anymore."
"I'm sorry."
Nathan felt something inside him break.
"You have nothing to apologize for."
"You saved their lives."
Lily stared at him for several long seconds.
Then she whispered something so quietly he almost missed it.
"Mommy said Daddy would come."
Nathan's expression hardened.
Lily kept talking.
"But he wasn't my real daddy anymore."
"He became someone else."
She swallowed hard.
"He said Mommy had a secret."
Nathan leaned closer.
"What secret?"
Lily's frightened eyes filled with tears again.
She looked toward the closed hospital door before answering.
"He said..."
Her tiny voice shook.
"...the twins don't belong to him."
Silence swallowed the room.
Nathan's pulse thundered in his ears.
Outside the room, unnoticed by everyone inside, a tall man wearing a black winter coat quietly stepped away from the doorway.
He had heard every word.
He pulled out his phone.
"They're alive," he whispered.
A cold voice answered from the other end.
"I told you the girl would find Nathan."
The man looked through the hospital window at Lily.
"What do we do now?"
The reply came without hesitation.
May you like
"Finish what Marcus started."
The line went dead.
