Chapter 2 – The Man Outside the Hospital Door

Chapter 2 – The Man Outside the Hospital Door
The man slipped his phone into his pocket and walked calmly toward the elevator.
He never looked back.
A security camera quietly captured his face.
Inside Lily's room, Nathan gently pulled a chair beside her bed.

He forced himself to remain calm.
"You don't have to be afraid anymore."
Lily looked at him with tired eyes.
"Mommy said bad people always find us."
Nathan shook his head.
"They won't find you here."
He wanted to believe those words.
Deep inside, he wasn't sure they were true.
Lily glanced toward the hallway.
"Can I see Owen and Ethan?"
Nathan smiled softly.
"As soon as the doctors finish checking them."
She nodded.
Then she looked down at her tiny hands.
"My blanket..."
Nathan picked up the worn blanket folded beside her bed.
She hugged it tightly.
"It smells like Mommy."
Nathan swallowed the lump in his throat.
He had spent years convincing himself Sarah no longer needed him.
Now every reminder of her felt like another wound.
Dr. Emily Harper entered quietly.
"The twins are responding well."
Nathan released a slow breath.
"They're going to make it?"
Emily smiled.
"I believe they will."
Lily closed her eyes.
"Thank you."
Emily gently brushed a strand of hair away from the little girl's forehead.
"You've done something very brave."
Lily frowned.
"I was scared."
Emily smiled again.
"Being brave doesn't mean you're never scared."
"It means you keep going anyway."
Lily thought about those words.
"My mommy always said that."
Nathan looked away.
Sarah used to say the same thing to him when they were children.
The memory hit him harder than he expected.
An hour later, Nathan walked into the hospital's private conference room.
Emily followed him inside.
She placed Sarah's damaged letter on the table.
"We need to notify the police."
Nathan nodded.
"I already called Detective Ryan Collins."
Emily recognized the name immediately.
"He handled Marcus Kane's assault case years ago."
Nathan looked surprised.
"You remember?"
"I remember everything about Marcus."
Emily folded her arms.
"I never believed he changed."
Nathan stared through the window.
"Neither did I."
The conference room door opened.
Detective Ryan Collins stepped inside.
His gray winter coat was covered with melting snow.
"Nathan."
"It's been a while."
Nathan shook his hand.
"I wish it were under different circumstances."
Ryan sat down.
"I read the emergency report."
He looked at the bracelet lying on the table.
"And I assume that's important."
Nathan slid it toward him.
"It belonged to my sister."
Ryan examined the engraving.
"Property of Sarah Carter. 2018."
He looked up.
"Why would she send this?"
Nathan placed the damaged letter beside it.
"That's what we're trying to figure out."
Ryan carefully read the surviving words.
His expression slowly darkened.
"This wasn't meant to be a goodbye."
Nathan nodded.
"No."
"It was a warning."
Ryan leaned back in his chair.
"Where's Sarah now?"
Nathan remained silent.
He didn't know.
Not knowing terrified him.
Across town, inside an abandoned hunting cabin buried in snow, Marcus Kane sat alone.
His knuckles were still stained with dried blood.
An empty whiskey bottle rested beside him.
The television played local news.
A reporter stood outside Cascade Regional Medical Center.
"Authorities confirmed that three unidentified children were rescued during last night's blizzard."
Marcus reached for the remote.
He turned up the volume.
"No names have been released."
Marcus smiled.
"They're alive."
The cabin door creaked open.
A broad-shouldered man entered carrying a duffel bag.
"You were right."
"They made it."
Marcus didn't look away from the television.
"What about Sarah?"
The man hesitated.
"We couldn't find her."
Marcus slammed the bottle against the fireplace.
Glass exploded across the floor.
"You left without checking?"
"The police were coming."
Marcus stood.
His face twisted with rage.
"I told you there could be no witnesses."
The man lowered his head.
"We'll find her."
Marcus stepped closer.
"No."
"You'll find the children first."
"They're the problem now."
Back at the hospital, Lily slowly walked into the neonatal recovery room.
Nathan stayed beside her.
She immediately spotted the twins sleeping peacefully.
A smile spread across her face for the first time.
"Owen."
"Ethan."
"I'm here."
Nathan watched her gently touch each baby's tiny hand.
She wasn't acting like a five-year-old.
She was acting like their mother.
Lily looked up at Nathan.
"Can they stay with me?"
Nathan smiled.
"They'll never be far away again."
She nodded.
Then she reached into the pocket of her coat.
"I almost forgot."
She pulled out a tiny red toy car.
Its paint was chipped.
One wheel was missing.
Nathan smiled.
"Is that Owen's?"
Lily shook her head.
"No."
"It belongs to the man Mommy wanted us to find."
Nathan frowned.
"What man?"
Lily placed the toy car into his hand.
"Mommy said if anything happened..."
"...give this to Uncle Nathan."
Nathan turned the toy over.
A small piece of tape covered the bottom.
He carefully peeled it away.
Hidden inside was a tiny silver key.
No bigger than his thumb.
Nathan stared at it.
"This wasn't an accident."
Emily stepped closer.
"What do you think it opens?"
Nathan slowly closed his hand around the key.
"I don't know."
"But Sarah risked everything to make sure it reached me."
Before anyone could speak again, Ryan's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
His face changed within seconds.
"What?"
"When?"
He looked directly at Nathan.
"The police just searched Sarah's house."
Nathan's heartbeat stopped.
Ryan lowered the phone.
"There was blood everywhere."
He paused.
"But Sarah Carter..."
"...wasn't there."
Outside the hospital parking garage, the same black SUV that had followed the ambulance all morning quietly started its engine.
Someone inside raised a camera.
A photograph captured Nathan holding the tiny silver key.
The driver smiled.
May you like
"Now we know what they found."
The SUV disappeared into the falling snow before anyone noticed it had ever been there.
