Chapter 7: The Black Box

The lockbox sat in the center of the desk like a dormant bomb.

"A biometric lock," Sterling noted, adjusting his glasses. "Fingerprint required."

"My father's?" Elena guessed.

"Edmund has been dead for twelve years," Adrian said, pacing. "If it's his print, we'll have to drill it. And drilling a high-grade tungsten box could trigger an incendiary fail-safe if he wanted the contents kept secret."

Elena looked at the box, then down at her own hands. She thought about the will, the clauses, the intricate puzzle her father had left behind. To be worn by the true woman of the house. He hadn't just left her money; he had left her a path.

"He wouldn't lock it with his own fingerprint if he knew he might not be here to open it," Elena murmured.

She placed her right index finger on the glass scanner.

The machine beeped angrily, flashing red. ACCESS DENIED.

"It was a good thought," Sterling sighed.

"Wait," Adrian said, stepping closer. "Elena, you were a baby when he set up the trust, right? But he updated the trust twelve years ago, right before he died. You were thirteen."

"Yes," she said.

"When you were thirteen, you burned your hand in the kitchens. Badly."

Elena stared at him. She remembered. Mrs. Gable had forced her to carry boiling water without proper gloves. Her right hand had been scarred for months. Her father—though pretending to be just the master of the house—had secretly arranged for a private doctor to treat her in the middle of the night.

She took a deep breath, wiping her thumb on her trousers, and placed her left thumb on the scanner.

A soft whirring sound filled the room. The light turned green. With a mechanical click, the lid popped open.

Inside lay a single USB drive and a handwritten ledger.

Adrian plugged the drive into a laptop. A scrambled audio file appeared. He hit play. The voices were crackly, recorded via an illegal wiretap.

"The plane is prepped, Lady Victoria," a gruff, heavily accented male voice said. "The altimeter wiring has been bypassed. When he hits ten thousand feet, the instruments will lie to him."

"And the pilot?" It was Victoria’s voice. Cold, imperious, chillingly calm.

"He won't know until the dive. It will look like a tragic mechanical failure."

"See that it does. The wire transfer to your offshore account clears in three days. Do not contact me again."

The recording clicked off.

Adrian backed away from the computer as if it had caught fire. He sank into a chair, putting his head in his hands. "She killed him. My mother actually killed my father."

Elena flipped through the physical ledger. "It gets worse. This ledger lists payouts. Blackmail. The mechanic who rigged the plane has been bleeding her dry for a decade. That’s why she needed the Laurent merger, Adrian. She isn't just embezzling company funds to hide me—she's embezzling to pay off her husband's murderer."

Sterling’s eyes were hard as flint. "If we take this to the police, she will be arrested. But the resulting scandal will tank Vale Holdings. The stock will plummet to pennies. Thousands of employees will lose their jobs. The Laurents will swoop in and buy the company for scrap."

Elena closed the lockbox. The maid was gone; the CEO had arrived.

"We don't take it to the police," Elena said. "We take it to the boardroom."
