Chapter 10: The True Heir

"You have nothing," Victoria hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. She glared at Elena, her eyes wild, cornered. "You think you can come into my world and take my crown? I built the modern era of this company! Edmund was weak!"
"Edmund was my father," Elena said, standing up. She walked slowly toward the head of the table. "And you are nothing but a parasite who fed on his legacy while forcing his daughter to wash your china."
The boardroom doors opened again. This time, it wasn't security.
Two detectives from the NYPD Major Crimes Unit stepped in, flanked by uniform officers.
"Victoria Vale," the lead detective said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for the conspiracy and murder of Edmund Vale. We have officers seizing your assets and electronics at Blackthorne Hall as we speak."
Victoria looked at the officers, then at Adrian, who was staring at her with a mixture of disgust and heartbreak.
"Adrian," she pleaded, her aristocratic mask finally shattering. "Adrian, please. Do something. I am your mother!"
"You died to me the moment I heard that tape," Adrian said, turning his back to her.
The officers grabbed Victoria’s arms, snapping the cold steel cuffs around her wrists. For the first time in her life, the great Lady Victoria was dragged out of a room against her will, screaming obscenities as the heavy doors closed behind her.
The remaining board members sat in stunned silence.
Elena walked over to the chair at the head of the table—the CEO's chair. She didn't sit down immediately. She looked at the city sprawling below through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
"The Laurent merger is officially terminated," Elena addressed the room, her voice steady, leaving no room for debate. "We will issue a press release in one hour stating that Victoria Vale has been removed for severe corporate malfeasance. The murder charges will remain private until the police unseal the indictment. Mr. Sterling, prepare the transition documents."
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman," Sterling said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips.
The board members, realizing the shift in power was absolute, quickly murmured their assent and scrambled out of the room to manage the incoming fallout.
Only Elena, Adrian, and Sterling remained.
"You did it," Adrian said, walking over to her. "You took it all back."
"We did it," Elena corrected. "I need you, Adrian. I know the secrets of this company, but you know the players. We run it together."
Adrian nodded, a real sense of peace settling over him for the first time in years. "I'll go draft the press release with PR."
He left the boardroom, leaving Elena and the old attorney.
Elena finally sat in the high-backed leather chair. It fit her perfectly. She let out a long breath, feeling the weight of the last twelve years lift from her shoulders.
"It's over, Arthur," she said.
"Not quite, Elena," Sterling said quietly.
Elena opened her eyes. Sterling was standing by the table, holding a pristine white envelope. But this one didn't have a black wax seal.
It was sealed in blood-red wax, bearing a crest Elena didn't recognize—a double-headed eagle gripping a diamond.
"What is that?" she asked, a chill running down her spine.

"Your father's final instruction," Sterling said, his face grave. "To be opened only after Victoria was removed from power." He slid the envelope across the mahogany table. "Victoria didn't hire the mechanic on her own, Elena. She didn't have the connections. She had help from a family much older, and much more dangerous, than the Laurents."
Elena stared at the red seal. The game hadn't ended. The board had just been reset.
