Chapter 12: The Syndicate's Envoy

The name Project Icarus hung in the air like a live wire.

Elena maintained perfect eye contact with Julian, her face an unreadable mask of cold marble. Inside, her mind was racing. She had read every financial ledger, every hidden file, every classified email her father had left in the biometric safe. There was absolutely no mention of a Project Icarus.

"You have until midnight, Miss Vale," Julian whispered, tapping his knuckles twice on the mahogany table. He straightened his suit jacket. "Don't try to run. The airports are watching for you. The police work for us. Welcome to the real game."

Julian and his heavy-set enforcers turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving a suffocating silence in their wake.

Adrian immediately scrambled to the door, locking the deadbolt. He turned to Elena, his chest heaving. "What the hell is Project Icarus? Elena, tell me you know what he's talking about."

"I have no idea," Elena said, standing up. She looked at Sterling. "Arthur. You were my father’s confidant for thirty years. What is Icarus?"

Sterling was wiping sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. "Edmund kept secrets even from me, Elena. But... there was a shadow division of Vale Tech. A black-site laboratory funded completely off the books. He called it 'The Greenhouse.' He said he was growing something that would render modern banking obsolete."

"Where is it?" Elena demanded.

"I don't know the exact location," Sterling admitted. "But I know who was financing the supply drops. A dummy corporation called Apex Logistics."

Elena walked over to the CEO's computer terminal. She bypassed the standard login, utilizing the master administrative codes she had memorized from her father's lockbox. Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

"Apex Logistics," Elena muttered, scanning the encrypted corporate registry. "They own three warehouses in the tri-state area. Two of them are active shipping hubs. But the third one..." She pulled up a satellite image of a dilapidated, rusted warehouse on the industrial waterfront of Brooklyn. "No power usage reported to the grid in five years. But look at the thermal imaging."

Adrian leaned over her shoulder. The satellite thermal map showed the rusted warehouse glowing bright red underground.

"It's a massive subterranean server farm," Adrian breathed. "They’re drawing power from the river’s current using submerged hydroelectric turbines. Completely off the grid."

"That's Icarus," Elena said, grabbing her coat. "Julian Kensington thinks I'm a scared little maid who will roll over and sign away my empire to survive." She looked at Adrian, her dark eyes flashing with dangerous resolve. "Let's go find out what my father built. And then we are going to use it to destroy them."

They bypassed the lobby, taking the executive freight elevator to the underground parking garage. Elena bypassed her waiting town car and driver, tossing Adrian the keys to a sleek, unassuming black Audi SUV from the executive motor pool.

"You drive," Elena said, sliding into the passenger seat and pulling out a secured tablet. "Julian's men are likely watching the main exits. Take the maintenance access tunnel that leads to the subway grating on 4th Street."

As the Audi tore through the subterranean tunnel, Adrian gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. "Elena, the Kensingtons aren't like my mother. Victoria was greedy and cruel. The Kensingtons are warlords. If Julian finds out we went to the lab..."

"He’ll kill us," Elena finished for him, not looking up from her screen as she hacked into the warehouse's perimeter security system. "Which is why we aren't going to give him the chance."
