Chapter 15: The Judas Kiss

The revelation hit Elena like a physical blow, but she didn't let Victoria see her bleed. She stood up, her face a mask of absolute control.

"Your transfer to the Hamptons will be processed by morning," Elena said, turning toward the door.

"Be careful, little maid," Victoria called out from the metal table, her voice dripping with dark amusement. "Sterling taught you how to play the game. But he wrote the rules for the Kensingtons."

Elena walked out of the prison into the biting pre-dawn air. Adrian was waiting in the Audi.

"Well?" he asked as she climbed in.

"It's Arthur," Elena said, staring blankly ahead. "Arthur Sterling is the leak. He’s the one who told Julian about Project Icarus. He’s the reason Julian knew we were at the boardroom."

Adrian slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "He’s been with our family for thirty years! He defended you! He brought you the will!"

"Because the Kensingtons wanted Victoria out just as much as we did," Elena realized, the terrible genius of it unfolding in her mind. "Victoria was getting sloppy. The FBI was investigating the embezzled funds. The Kensingtons used me—the hidden bastard daughter—as the perfect weapon to legally remove Victoria without dirtying their own hands. Sterling orchestrated my entire rise to power, just so he could hand the company over to Julian on a silver platter."

"So what do we do?" Adrian asked, his voice trembling. "Julian will be out of that bunker by sunrise. Sterling will be expecting us to come to him for help."

"Then we give him exactly what he expects," Elena said, her eyes narrowing. "Drive to Blackthorne Hall. We are hosting a breakfast meeting."

At 8:00 AM, the grand dining room of Blackthorne Hall was bathed in golden morning light. The long mahogany table was set with fine china, crystal glasses, and silver platters of fruit and pastries.

Arthur Sterling sat at the table, sipping black coffee, looking perfectly composed.

Elena walked in, wearing a sharp white tailored suit. She looked rested, confident, powerful. Adrian walked in behind her, his face tight but controlled.

"Good morning, Elena," Sterling smiled warmly. "I trust your evening was uneventful? I was worried when I couldn't reach you."

"It was very productive, Arthur," Elena said, taking her seat at the head of the table. She poured herself a cup of Earl Grey tea. "We located Project Icarus."

Sterling’s eyes flickered, just a fraction of a second, but Elena caught it. "Truly? And is the asset secure?"

"It is," Elena said. She pulled a small black USB drive from her pocket and set it next to her teacup. "The complete quantum algorithm. Capable of bankrupting any shadow corporation on earth."

Sterling reached out a hand. "You should let me put that in the estate's high-security vault, Elena. It is too dangerous to carry."

"I agree," Elena smiled.

The dining room doors swung open. Julian Kensington walked in. He looked slightly disheveled from his night in the bunker, his suit wrinkled, but his eyes were murderous. His enforcers stood outside the door.

"How nice of you to join us, Julian," Elena said, taking a sip of her tea.

Sterling didn't look surprised. He simply stood up and walked over to stand behind Julian’s chair. The betrayal was out in the open.

"You played a cute trick at the warehouse, Elena," Julian snarled, placing his hands on the table. "But the game is over. Arthur, take the drive."

Sterling reached for the black USB drive on the table.

"I wouldn't touch that, Arthur," Elena said softly.

Sterling paused.

"That drive doesn't contain Project Icarus," Elena said, leaning back in her chair. "Project Icarus is currently uploaded to a secure, dead-man's-switch server on the dark web. If my heart stops beating, or if I do not enter a passcode every twelve hours, the algorithm will automatically execute the 'Sunspot' protocol."

Julian’s face drained of color. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Elena tilted her head. She pressed a button on her phone.

Julian’s burner phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out. It was an automated alert from his offshore Cayman accounts.

TRANSFER INITIATED: $50,000,000 to RED CROSS INTERNATIONAL. BALANCE: DROPPING.

"I just bled fifty million dollars from your slush fund, Julian," Elena said, her voice like cracking ice. "A mere fraction of your wealth, I know. Consider it a demonstration."

Julian stared at his phone, absolute shock rendering him speechless.

"You don't own me, Julian," Elena stated, standing up, the full weight of her power filling the room. "And you do not own this company. If you ever threaten my family again, if you ever step foot in my building again, I will not just bankrupt you. I will use Icarus to unmask every single illegal transaction the Kensington Group has made for the last century to the federal government. You will spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison."

Julian slowly looked up at her. For the first time in his life, the predator had become the prey.

"And you," Elena turned her cold gaze to Sterling. "You have exactly ten seconds to leave my house before I have Adrian beat you to death with a fireplace poker."

Sterling looked at Julian, seeking protection, but Julian was already backing away, staring at Elena with a mixture of pure hatred and undeniable respect.

"This isn't over, Elena," Julian whispered. "You just started a war you cannot comprehend."

"I was born in a war, Julian," Elena replied. "I'm just the one finishing it."

She watched them turn and walk out of the grand doors of Blackthorne Hall.

Adrian let out a massive, shaking breath, collapsing into a chair. "My god. You actually did it. You beat them."

May you like

Elena looked down at the black USB drive on the table. She picked it up, rolling it in her fingers, her reflection caught in the polished silver of the tea service.

"No, Adrian," Elena said quietly, her eyes darkening as she looked toward the open doors. "I just forced them to take me seriously. The real game starts tomorrow."
