Chapter 4: The Plan Hidden Beneath the Smile

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I couldn’t.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw Maya sitting on that cold marble floor.

The plastic bowl.

The empty pantry.

The fear in her eyes when she thought she had done something wrong.

And now I knew something even worse.

It wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t a misunderstanding.

Someone had been making choices.

Deliberate choices.

Against my daughter.

At 3:17 in the morning, I was still sitting in my home office, staring at the documents Daniel had given me.

The city lights outside my window blurred through the rain.

I had spent my entire adult life learning how to recognize danger.

In business, people rarely showed their true intentions.

They smiled.

They shook your hand.

They told you how much they respected you.

And then, when your back was turned, they searched for weaknesses.

I never thought the same rules would apply inside my own home.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

I quickly closed the folder.

“Come in.”

The door opened slowly.

Maya stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were tired.

“Daddy?”

I immediately stood.

“Sweetheart, why are you awake?”

She walked closer.

“Are you leaving?”

The question caught me off guard.

“Leaving?”

She nodded.

“Like Mommy Sarah.”

My heart broke.

I walked toward her and knelt down.

“Oh, Maya.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“I’m not leaving you.”

“But people leave.”

Her voice was small.

“Mommy left because she got sick. You leave for work. Eleanor said…”

She stopped.

“What did Eleanor say?”

Maya looked away.

“She said rich people always choose their business before their families.”

I closed my eyes.

Because that sentence explained so much.

Eleanor had been planting ideas.

Little pieces of fear.

Making my daughter believe she was unwanted.

Making her believe losing me was inevitable.

“Maya.”

I held her face gently.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“You are not a problem.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

“Even if I make mistakes?”

“Especially then.”

She hugged me tightly.

And I made another promise.

Not just to her.

To Sarah.

I would protect our daughter.

No matter what it cost.

The next morning, Eleanor acted like nothing had happened.

That almost made me angrier.

She walked into the kitchen wearing a cream-colored blouse and perfectly styled hair.

She looked like the same woman who appeared in magazines.

The same woman everyone admired.

“Good morning.”

I watched her carefully.

“Morning.”

She poured coffee.

“Did you sleep well?”

The question was almost insulting.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Good. I was worried last night’s emotional conversation upset you.”

Emotional conversation.

That was what she called it.

Not abuse.

Not cruelty.

Not manipulation.

Just a conversation.

“I’ve been thinking,” I said.

She looked interested.

“About?”

“Maya.”

Her expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“I think we need to make some changes.”

She placed her coffee cup down.

“Of course.”

“I want to be more involved.”

“That’s wonderful.”

“I want to attend every school meeting.”

“Richard, your schedule—”

“My schedule will change.”

Silence.

A small crack appeared in her confidence.

“I want access to everything regarding Maya.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?”

“School records. Medical information. Activities. Everything.”

A smile slowly disappeared from her face.

“Richard, do you think I’ve been hiding something?”

I didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

She stood straighter.

“This is because of last night.”

“This is because of my daughter.”

“You’re letting a child manipulate you.”

The sentence was so cold that for a moment, I couldn’t believe she said it.

“My daughter?”

“Yes.”

She sighed.

“Maya knows how to get sympathy. She knows you feel guilty about Sarah, and she uses that.”

I stared at her.

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not concern.

Resentment.

Eleanor didn’t see Maya as a child who needed protection.

She saw her as competition.

“You’re jealous of my daughter.”

Her face hardened.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you tell her she was unwanted?”

“I never said that.”

“You told her she was a leftover.”

Her expression froze.

For the first time, she looked genuinely caught.

“I—”

She stopped.

I stepped closer.

“Maya told me.”

“She misunderstood.”

“No.”

My voice became colder.

“She understood perfectly.”

Eleanor grabbed her purse.

“I cannot believe you’re accusing me like this.”

“You’re not leaving this conversation.”

She looked at me.

“Excuse me?”

“I said we’re not finished.”

For years, people had described me as patient.

But patience has limits.

And Eleanor had crossed mine.

That afternoon, Daniel arrived with more information.

This time, he looked concerned.

More concerned than before.

“Richard, I found something.”

I motioned for him to sit.

“What?”

He opened his laptop.

“Michael Voss isn’t just Eleanor’s former fiancé.”

I waited.

“He’s drowning in debt.”

I frowned.

“How much?”

“Nearly four million dollars.”

I leaned back.

“And Eleanor has been sending him money.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since shortly after your wedding.”

My stomach tightened.

Two years.

Two years of payments.

Two years of lies.

“What else?”

Daniel hesitated.

“There’s more.”

He opened another file.

“Eleanor searched for information about your estate planning before you even proposed.”

My expression changed.

“She researched my finances?”

“Extensively.”

He showed me records.

Inheritance.

Life insurance.

Company ownership.

Trust funds.

Everything.

“She wasn’t planning a future with me.”

Daniel looked at me.

“No.”

He paused.

“She was planning around you.”

The room went silent.

Then I noticed another document.

“What is this?”

Daniel looked at the paper.

“That’s the reason I wanted to meet today.”

I picked it up.

It was a legal document.

A guardianship agreement.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I saw it.

A section about Maya.

My hands tightened.

“What is this?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Richard…”

I looked up.

“What?”

He took a breath.

“Your wife has been preparing to become Maya’s legal guardian if something happens to you.”

The words hit like a punch.

“If something happens to me?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the document.

Then I saw the date.

It was created three months ago.

The same month Eleanor began asking more questions about my health.

The same month she started controlling my schedule.

The same month Maya began hiding.

A horrible thought entered my mind.

A thought I didn’t want to believe.

But couldn’t ignore.

“Daniel…”

“Yes?”

“Do you think Eleanor is capable of hurting me?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

Finally, he said:

“Richard, I think you need to stop asking what she has already done.”

He closed the laptop.

“And start asking what she was planning to do next.”

That night, I made a decision.

I wouldn’t confront Eleanor yet.

Not until I knew everything.

Because if she had been planning this for two years…

I needed to understand the entire plan.

The next morning, Daniel sent me one final message.

Only five words.

“I found her first husband.”

And beneath it was a photograph.

A photograph that revealed Eleanor had a past she had never told me about.

May you like

A past involving another wealthy man.

And a story that ended in a way I never expected.
