Chapter 12: The Secret My Father Buried

The room felt completely silent.
Not peaceful silence.
The kind of silence that comes right before a storm.
I stared at the document sitting on the table.
A medical records request.
Sarah’s medical records.
Requested by my father’s former attorney.
The same attorney who handled every private matter for the Sterling family.
The same man my father trusted with secrets he never shared with anyone.
Including me.
For years, I believed my father left behind a business empire.
A company.
A legacy.
A fortune built through hard work.
But now I was beginning to understand something.
He also left behind secrets.
And someone had spent years making sure those secrets stayed hidden.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Find this attorney.”
He nodded.
“I already did.”
I looked at him.
“Who is he?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered:
“Charles Whitmore.”
The name meant nothing at first.
Then it hit me.
Whitmore.
Eleanor’s last name.
My stomach tightened.
“Wait.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Charles Whitmore is related to Eleanor?”
“He’s her father.”
The words landed like a punch.
I stood completely still.
Her father.
The attorney who accessed Sarah’s medical records.
The man connected to the Sterling family.
And the father of the woman who destroyed my home.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Richard, everything we’ve uncovered points to one thing.”
“What?”
“This started long before Eleanor entered your life.”
I couldn’t sleep that night.
Every memory I had of my life felt different.
My father.
My company.
Sarah.
Eleanor.
Everything was connected.
I walked through the empty house, unable to rest.
The security team had moved Maya into a protected room.
She was safe.
That was the only thing keeping me calm.
I stopped outside her door.
Inside, I could hear her breathing softly.
A child sleeping peacefully.
A child who had already lost too much.
I thought about Sarah.
If she knew what was happening now…
Would she be proud of me?
Or would she wonder why it took me so long?
I closed my eyes.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
The next morning, Daniel found Charles Whitmore.
He wasn’t hiding.
He was living quietly in a retirement community outside the city.
When we arrived, he looked older than I expected.
But his eyes were sharp.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You’re Richard Sterling.”
I stared at him.
“You know who I am?”
He sighed.
“I’ve known who you are your entire life.”
The answer disturbed me.
“Why?”
He looked away.
“Because your father asked me to watch over the Sterling family.”
“Watch over us?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you betray us?”
His face changed.
“I never betrayed your family.”
“You requested Sarah’s medical records.”
Silence.
His eyes dropped.
So he knew.
“You know about that.”
“Yes.”
He slowly sat down.
“I was hoping this day would never come.”
“Why?”
“Because it means the truth is finally impossible to hide.”
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.”
Charles looked at me.
“Your father made mistakes.”
“What kind?”
“Dangerous ones.”
I waited.
“He trusted the wrong people.”
“Who?”
Charles looked toward the window.
“Evelyn Carter.”
My heart tightened.
“Eleanor?”
“Yes.”
“How did my father know her?”
Charles took a breath.
“Because your father was the one who helped her family.”
I frowned.
“Her family?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Charles was silent.
Then:
“Because years ago, Charles Whitmore wasn’t just an attorney.”
He looked at me.
“He was involved in a financial scandal.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“What kind of scandal?”
“Your father discovered that several investors were being cheated.”
“And Charles was involved?”
“Yes.”
My hands tightened.
“What does Eleanor have to do with this?”
Charles looked down.
“Evelyn was young.”
“How young?”
“Twenty-two.”
“And?”
“She blamed your father.”
I froze.
“For what?”
“For destroying her family.”
The pieces started coming together.
Eleanor didn’t choose me because I was wealthy.
She chose me because of my father.
Because of something that happened decades ago.
“This was revenge.”
Charles nodded.
“That was always my fear.”
“Then why did you let her get close to me?”
His expression became painful.
“Because I thought she had changed.”
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Before I married her?”
“Yes.”
My anger rose.
“You knew she was Evelyn Carter and said nothing?”
Charles looked ashamed.
“I tried to warn your father.”
“My father was dead.”
“Yes.”
“And Sarah?”
His face changed.
“She found out.”
Everything stopped.
“What?”
“Sarah discovered the connection.”
“How?”
“She found old records.”
I remembered the journal.
The investigation.
The fear.
“She confronted Eleanor.”
Charles nodded.
“And that’s when things became dangerous.”
I stood up.
“Did Eleanor cause Sarah’s death?”
Charles didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Tell me.”
His voice became quiet.
“I don’t know.”
I stared.
“But I know Sarah believed her life was in danger.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she wanted to protect you.”
The words hurt.
Sarah protected me.
Even while dying.
“She thought if you knew, you would confront Eleanor.”
“And?”
“You would have.”
He was right.
I would have.
Sarah knew me better than anyone.
“She was afraid Eleanor would hurt Maya.”
My chest tightened.
That was always the reason.
Maya.
Everything came back to Maya.
When I returned to the safe house, Maya was waiting.
“Daddy?”
I forced a smile.
“Yes?”
“Did you find out about Mommy?”
I sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Was she scared?”
The question surprised me.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Maya touched her necklace.
“Mommy was always brave.”
I smiled sadly.
“She was.”
“She told me something.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Maya looked at me.
“The night before she went to the hospital.”
“What did she say?”
Maya thought carefully.
“She told me…”
She paused.
“If anything happens, remember one thing.”
“What?”
“She said…”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Never trust the woman who smiles when everyone is watching.”
I froze.
Because I knew exactly who Sarah meant.
That evening, Daniel discovered one final piece of evidence.
A hidden audio recording.
Recovered from Sarah’s old investigator.
The recording was damaged.
But one part was clear.
Sarah’s voice.
Weak.
But determined.
And then another voice.
Eleanor’s.
My hands shook as I listened.
Sarah said:
“Why are you doing this?”
Eleanor answered:
“Because your family took everything from mine.”
Sarah:
“Richard had nothing to do with it.”
Eleanor:
“He has everything.”
A pause.
Then Sarah whispered:
“You’re not going to hurt my daughter.”
And Eleanor replied:
“No.”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m going to take what should have been mine.”
The recording ended.
I sat there frozen.
Because for the first time, I knew the truth.
Eleanor wasn’t trying to become part of my family.
She was trying to destroy it.
And she had been planning it for years.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
He looked at me with a serious expression.
“Richard.”
“What?”
“There’s one problem.”
“What?”
“If Eleanor knows we found this recording…”
I looked at him.
“She’ll know we know.”
Daniel nodded.
“And according to the security report…”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She left the city this morning.”
I stood.
“Where did she go?”
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then answered:
“To the same place where Sarah spent her final night.”
I felt cold.
“Where?”
Daniel looked at me.
“The hospital.”
And suddenly, I realized.
Eleanor wasn’t running away.
She was going back.
May you like
Because whatever she was hiding…
was still there.
