Part 2 – Chapter 17: The Ghost Behind the Name

Part 2 – Chapter 17: The Ghost Behind the Name
Richard was already running before Daniel reached the front door.
By the time Daniel stepped onto the front porch, Richard had crossed the lawn and reached the old oak tree.

No one was there.
Only damp grass.
Fresh footprints.
And the lingering feeling that someone had been watching.
Richard searched the property for nearly twenty minutes.
The security team swept every inch of the estate.
Nothing.
No vehicles.
No fingerprints.
No cameras.
Whoever had been there knew exactly how to disappear.
Daniel found Richard standing beneath the tree.
"You won't find him."
Richard didn't answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the ground.
There, pressed into the soft earth, was a single footprint.
Expensive Italian leather.
Size eleven.
Fresh.
"He wanted us to see this," Richard said quietly.
Daniel nodded.
"He's sending a message."
Richard looked toward the mansion.
"No."
"What do you mean?"
"He isn't sending a message."
Richard's expression hardened.
"He's announcing that he's here."
An hour later, Maya came home from school.
She climbed out of the car smiling, unaware of the tension surrounding the estate.
She carried a stack of books against her chest.
"Dad!"
Richard met her halfway down the walkway and hugged her tightly.
She laughed.
"Okay..."
"You all right?"
"I'm fine."
"You sure?"
She nodded.
"I just had math."
Richard smiled despite himself.
"I can see why you'd look exhausted."
She grinned.
"Exactly."
For a brief moment, everything felt normal again.
Then Daniel stepped outside.
"Maya."
She waved.
"Hi, Uncle Daniel."
"I need to ask you something."
She tilted her head.
"Sure."
"Did your art teacher ever talk about your family?"
Maya thought for a second.
"Sometimes."
Richard exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"What did she say?" Richard asked.
"She always asked if Grandpa liked drawing."
Richard frowned.
"My father?"
Maya nodded.
"She asked if Grandpa ever painted pictures."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
Maya continued.
"She also asked if Mom liked old jewelry."
Richard's stomach tightened.
"What exactly did she ask?"
Maya looked confused.
"She asked where Mom got the necklace."
Sarah's necklace.
The one Maya now wore every day.
Richard felt a chill run through him.
"Did you tell her?"
Maya shook her head.
"I said it belonged to Mom."
"Nothing else?"
"No."
Daniel quietly wrote something in his notebook.
Richard noticed.
"What is it?"
"She wasn't asking random questions."
"What do you mean?"
Daniel looked at Maya.
"Emily already knew about the necklace."
That evening, Daniel returned with another file.
"I found Emily's employment records."
Richard took the folder.
"They're fake."
"I figured."
"So I kept digging."
Daniel placed several photographs on the dining table.
Most were surveillance images.
Emily walking into grocery stores.
Emily leaving the school.
Emily sitting alone in a park.
Richard studied each picture carefully.
Then one photograph caught his attention.
Emily wasn't alone.
She was sitting across from an elderly man in a wheelchair.
Only the side of his face was visible.
The image was blurry.
But something about him seemed strangely familiar.
"Who is he?"
Daniel slid over another photograph.
Taken from a different angle.
Richard's breathing slowed.
Silver hair.
Sharp jawline.
Deep scar above his left eyebrow.
His father had once described that scar.
Nathan had received it as a teenager after crashing a motorcycle.
Richard looked up.
"Is that..."
Daniel nodded.
"We believe it is."
"Nathan."
Daniel sighed.
"If it isn't him..."
He pointed to the scar.
"...it's someone who spent years pretending to be him."
Richard couldn't sleep.
Just after midnight, he walked through the silent mansion.
Every hallway reminded him of Sarah.
The memories no longer hurt as sharply.
But they never left.
He eventually found himself standing outside the renovated reading room.
A warm light spilled beneath the door.
Maya was awake.
She sat curled into the oversized chair with a novel resting in her lap.
She looked up and smiled.
"I couldn't sleep either."
Richard sat beside her.
"What are you reading?"
She held up the book.
"A mystery."
He laughed softly.
"Seems appropriate."
She closed it.
"Dad?"
"Yes?"
"Are we in danger again?"
Richard hesitated.
He had promised Sarah that Maya would never again live in fear.
He refused to lie.
"There are people trying to understand our family."
She watched him carefully.
"The bad kind?"
"Maybe."
She looked down at Sarah's necklace.
"Mom always said bad people tell lies."
"She did."
"So..."
Maya looked back at him.
"...if we keep telling the truth..."
"...then we're stronger?"
Richard smiled.
"We are."
She leaned against his shoulder.
"I miss when life was boring."
Richard laughed quietly.
"So do I."
The next morning, Daniel called before sunrise.
"I need you downtown."
"Why?"
"I found Emily."
Richard was dressed within minutes.
Emily sat alone inside a small interview room at the private security office Daniel often used.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
She hadn't slept.
The confident teacher Maya had known was gone.
In her place sat a frightened woman.
Richard entered first.
Emily slowly raised her head.
"I'm sorry."
Richard remained standing.
"My daughter trusted you."
"I know."
"You lied to her."
Tears filled Emily's eyes.
"I never wanted to."
Daniel closed the door.
"You told Richard Nathan knows about the letter."
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know."
Richard's patience broke.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"It's true."
"You've been meeting him."
"He contacted me."
"When?"
"Why?"
Emily lowered her eyes.
"Because he's my father."
Silence filled the room.
Richard finally spoke.
"Have you ever met him before then?"
She nodded once.
"When I was little."
"What was he like?"
Emily stared at the table.
"He never hugged me."
Richard frowned.
"He never said he loved me."
She swallowed.
"He only ever asked one question."
"What question?"
"'Did anyone tell you who you belong to?'"
Richard exchanged a glance with Daniel.
Emily continued.
"I thought he wanted a family."
Her voice cracked.
"But he only wanted ownership."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What does Nathan want now?"
Emily looked directly at Richard.
"Not money."
"Not the company."
"Then what?"
She hesitated.
Finally, she whispered,
"He believes something belongs to him."
Richard's voice became almost inaudible.
"What?"
Emily looked at Sarah's necklace around Maya's photograph on Richard's phone screen.
"The necklace."
Richard frowned.
"Why?"
Emily slowly shook her head.
"I don't know."
"But he said..."
She struggled to repeat the words.
"...'Everything begins with the necklace.'"
Before Richard could ask another question—
Daniel's phone buzzed.
One of his investigators.
He answered immediately.
"What happened?"
His expression changed.
"When?"
Richard watched him carefully.
Daniel ended the call.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked at both of them.
"Our team searched Nathan's abandoned storage unit."
"And?"
Daniel placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a faded photograph.
It showed Jonathan Sterling...
standing beside a woman Richard had never seen...
holding a newborn baby.
Written across the back in Jonathan's unmistakable handwriting were six chilling words:
The child must never know the truth.
Richard stared at the picture.
His pulse thundered in his ears.
