Chapter 11: The Brother I Never Suspected

For several seconds, I couldn’t process the name.
Jonathan Sterling.
My brother.
My own blood.
The person who had stood beside me when our father died.
The person who helped me build Sterling Global Holdings from a small company into an international empire.
The person I trusted more than almost anyone in the world.
“No.”
The word escaped my mouth before I even realized I had spoken.
Daniel remained silent.
He knew.
He knew this was different.
Discovering Eleanor was a betrayal.
Discovering James Parker, my CFO, was a betrayal.
But Jonathan?
That was something else.
That was a wound.
“Richard,” Daniel said carefully. “I know this is difficult.”
“Difficult?”
I looked at him.
“My brother?”
“I’m not saying he’s guilty yet.”
“Then why is his name here?”
Daniel opened the folder.
“Because every connection leads back to him.”
I grabbed the documents.
The first page showed communication records.
Jonathan.
Eleanor.
Michael.
James.
All connected.
My eyes moved across the dates.
The first contact was almost three years ago.
Before I married Eleanor.
Before anyone knew there was a problem.
“How?”
Daniel looked serious.
“Your brother knew about your life.”
I looked up.
“He knew Sarah.”
“Yes.”
“He knew Maya.”
“Yes.”
“He knew I was vulnerable after Sarah died.”
Daniel nodded.
“And that made you the perfect target.”
I felt something inside me break.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
I spent the next hour remembering everything.
Jonathan had always been the opposite of me.
I was focused.
Serious.
Driven.
He was charming.
Social.
The kind of person who could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with ten new friends.
Growing up, everyone loved Jonathan.
Including me.
When our father died, Jonathan told me:
“Brother, we only have each other now.”
I believed him.
When I started my company, he was the first person I hired.
Not because he was the most qualified.
Because he was family.
And now I was looking at evidence that he may have helped destroy mine.
That evening, I called Jonathan.
I didn’t tell Daniel.
I didn’t tell security.
I needed to hear his voice.
I needed to know if I could still recognize my brother.
He answered after three rings.
“Richard?”
His voice sounded normal.
Warm.
The same voice I had heard for decades.
“Jonathan.”
“Everything okay?”
I looked out the window.
“No.”
A pause.
“What happened?”
“I need to ask you something.”
“Sure.”
“Do you know Eleanor’s real name?”
Silence.
Only two seconds.
But two seconds was enough.
My heart sank.
“What?”
He recovered quickly.
“Richard, what kind of question is that?”
“Answer me.”
“Of course I know her name.”
“Evelyn Carter?”
The silence returned.
Longer this time.
“Where did you hear that?”
I closed my eyes.
Because his reaction told me everything.
“You knew.”
“Richard—”
“You knew.”
My voice became colder.
“How long?”
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
I stood.
“How long have you known who she really was?”
Jonathan sighed.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Another pause.
Then he said:
“I was trying to protect you.”
The words almost made me laugh.
“Protect me?”
“Yes.”
“By helping her?”
“I didn’t help her.”
“Then why were you meeting with her?”
Silence.
I knew.
He knew I knew.
“Richard…”
“Why?”
His voice became quieter.
“Because I thought you would never see the truth.”
I froze.
“What truth?”
“That she was dangerous.”
The answer shocked me.
“What?”
Jonathan continued.
“I knew something was wrong with Eleanor.”
I gripped the phone.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t have proof.”
“And instead?”
“I watched her.”
I stared.
“You watched her?”
“Yes.”
“While she hurt Maya?”
A pause.
“I didn’t know that.”
“But you knew she was dangerous.”
“I was trying to find evidence.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“You were playing a game.”
“Richard—”
“You let me marry her.”
“I thought I could stop it.”
The words hit me.
“Stop what?”
Silence.
Then:
“The plan.”
I immediately drove to Jonathan’s house.
I needed answers.
Not excuses.
When he opened the door, he looked exhausted.
Older.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.
“Richard.”
I walked inside.
“Tell me everything.”
He closed the door.
“I should have told you years ago.”
“Yes.”
“I made a mistake.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“I met Eleanor before you did.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
“She approached me first.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted information.”
“About me?”
“Yes.”
My hands tightened.
“What information?”
“Your assets. Your company. Your family situation.”
The room felt cold.
“She targeted me through you.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I realized too late.”
“Then why didn’t you stop her?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because I thought I could expose her.”
“And what happened?”
“She found out I knew.”
“When?”
“After your wedding.”
I froze.
“What did she do?”
“She threatened me.”
“With what?”
Jonathan looked away.
“She knew about my gambling debts.”
I stared.
“What?”
He nodded.
“I was ashamed.”
For the first time, I saw my brother differently.
Not as the person who betrayed me.
But as someone who had been trapped.
“She used your weakness.”
“Yes.”
“Then James?”
Jonathan nodded.
“She recruited him too.”
“How?”
“Money.”
I looked down.
“Why?”
Jonathan’s voice broke.
“Because she wanted control of your company.”
I waited.
Then he said:
“But that wasn’t the only thing.”
“What else?”
He looked at me.
“She wanted Maya.”
My blood went cold.
“Why?”
“Because Maya is the key.”
“The key to what?”
Jonathan took a deep breath.
“Your father’s hidden trust.”
I froze.
“What?”
“The trust your father created before he died.”
I stared at him.
“That trust belongs to me.”
“Not entirely.”
My expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
Jonathan looked toward the window.
“When you turn thirty-five, the remaining shares are supposed to transfer.”
“Yes.”
“But if something happens to you before then…”
He stopped.
I understood.
“Maya inherits everything.”
Jonathan nodded.
“And Eleanor knew.”
The room went silent.
For years, I thought Eleanor wanted my money.
But now I understood.
She didn’t just want my wealth.
She wanted the future attached to my daughter.
Before I left, Jonathan stopped me.
“Richard.”
I turned.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
He looked terrified.
“I found something in Eleanor’s files.”
“What?”
“A document.”
“What kind?”
“A medical document.”
My heart raced.
“Whose?”
Jonathan swallowed.
“Sarah’s.”
I froze.
“Why would Eleanor have Sarah’s medical records?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“That’s what you need to find out.”
That night, Daniel examined the document Jonathan gave me.
After thirty minutes, he looked up.
His face was pale.
“Richard.”
“What?”
“This changes everything.”
“What is it?”
He placed the paper down.
“This isn’t just about money.”
I stared.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel pointed to the signature.
“This document was created before Sarah died.”
I looked closer.
The name at the bottom.
The signature.
And the date.
My hands began to shake.
Because the person who requested Sarah’s medical information was not Eleanor.
Not Jonathan.
Not James.
It was someone else.
Someone I never expected.
Someone who had been hiding in the shadows from the very beginning.
Daniel whispered:
“Richard…”
“Your father’s old attorney requested these records.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at the document again.
“Because Sarah discovered something about your family.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
May you like
He answered quietly:
“Something your father wanted buried forever.”
