Police arrested the young man on suspicion of theft and filing a false accusation against an innocent person.
As he was escorted outside, he paused and looked back at the maid.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
She nodded.
"I hope you learn from this."
The older man arranged for the maid to receive compensation for the emotional distress she had endured and offered her a promotion to oversee the household staff if she wished to stay.
She smiled for the first time that night.
