Chapter 7: Black Tide

The ballroom buzzed with uneasy whispers.

No one cared about the charity gala anymore.

The orchestra had quietly packed away their instruments. Half-empty champagne glasses sat abandoned on tables. Reporters clustered near the ballroom entrance, broadcasting live updates as the Sterling family empire unraveled in real time.

Only one phrase echoed through Celeste's mind.

Project Black Tide.

She looked at Admiral Reed.

"Tell me the truth."

The admiral's expression remained unreadable.

"Not here."

Rebecca Lawson stepped forward.

"With all due respect, Admiral, this investigation has become a federal matter."

Reed nodded.

"I understand."

He glanced around the ballroom.

"But Black Tide involves classified military operations."

Rebecca folded her arms.

"Then tell us what you can."

The admiral took a slow breath.

"Project Black Tide wasn't a combat mission."

"It was a rescue program."

He looked directly at Celeste.

"One that officially never existed."

Three years earlier...

A violent explosion had ripped through the USS Resolute during a covert recovery operation in the South China Sea.

The blast disabled communications and flooded several compartments within seconds.

Forty-four sailors became trapped below deck.

The nearest rescue team was over four hours away.

They didn't have four hours.

Commander Celeste Sterling volunteered immediately.

Despite knowing the submarine was becoming structurally unstable, she led the first emergency rescue team inside.

The temperature in the damaged compartments climbed rapidly as electrical fires spread through the vessel.

Smoke filled the narrow passageways.

Twisted steel blocked every escape route.

Then came the collapse.

A massive bulkhead door broke loose from its frame.

If it sealed completely, dozens of sailors would drown before rescuers could reach them.

Without waiting for orders, Celeste wedged herself between the collapsing steel and the doorway.

The burning metal pressed against her back.

Every second became agony.

One sailor escaped.

Then another.

Then another.

She counted every life.

Forty.

Forty-one.

Forty-two.

Forty-three.

When the final sailor crawled through the opening, the bulkhead finally crushed shut.

Celeste was still holding it.

Back in the ballroom, no one spoke.

Even Arthur listened.

Admiral Reed continued.

"When we reached her..."

"She had no pulse."

Victoria covered her mouth.

The admiral nodded.

"The medical team revived her after nearly six minutes."

A reporter whispered,

"Six minutes..."

"She was clinically dead."

Reed looked toward Celeste.

"You spent eight months recovering."

"You underwent seventeen surgeries."

"You never once asked about your own condition."

He smiled faintly.

"Your first question was whether every sailor made it home."

Celeste lowered her eyes.

"I already knew the answer."

"You couldn't have."

She looked back at him.

"I counted."

The admiral's eyes softened.

"Yes."

"You did."

Rebecca broke the silence.

"What does any of this have to do with Daniel Mercer?"

Reed's expression grew serious again.

"After Commander Sterling recovered, the Navy created a classified after-action report."

"It documented every detail of the rescue."

Rebecca nodded.

"The journal?"

"The original investigation became known internally as Project Black Tide."

He paused.

"Only twelve people ever received copies."

Rebecca frowned.

"You're saying Daniel Mercer somehow obtained one?"

"Yes."

"And that should have been impossible."

Arthur suddenly laughed.

The sound startled everyone.

"You actually expect people to believe this?"

He shook his head.

"My company has nothing to do with military operations."

Reed looked at him calmly.

"That's what concerns me."

Arthur's smile faded.

"If someone inside your corporation possessed classified military documents..."

"...we need to know why."

Rebecca added quietly,

"And how."

A federal agent hurried into the ballroom carrying a tablet.

"Ms. Lawson."

She turned.

"What is it?"

"We found security footage from Mr. Mercer's apartment."

"Does it show who took him?"

The agent nodded.

"Yes."

Rebecca held out her hand.

"Let me see."

The video began playing.

Daniel Mercer exited his apartment building carrying a black leather briefcase.

He looked nervous.

He checked over his shoulder twice before walking toward his car.

Then a black SUV pulled alongside him.

Two men stepped out.

Both wore dark suits.

One spoke briefly with Mercer.

The older accountant appeared frightened but didn't resist.

He climbed into the SUV.

The vehicle drove away.

Rebecca frowned.

"Can we identify them?"

The agent zoomed in.

The driver's face remained hidden.

But the passenger turned just enough for the camera to capture his profile.

Victoria gasped.

"No..."

Ethan stared at the screen.

His face drained of color.

Arthur remained perfectly still.

Celeste stepped closer.

She looked carefully at the frozen image.

"I know him."

Rebecca looked up.

"Who is he?"

Celeste answered without hesitation.

"Richard Sloan."

"The former head of Sterling Global Security."

Rebecca searched the name on her tablet.

"He retired four years ago."

Celeste shook her head.

"No."

"My father announced his retirement."

"He never actually left."

Admiral Reed looked toward Arthur.

"So Mr. Sloan still works for you."

Arthur replied calmly.

"I haven't spoken to Richard in years."

Before anyone could respond, Ethan suddenly shouted.

"Stop lying!"

The entire ballroom turned toward him.

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Ethan."

"No."

His voice shook with anger.

"I'm done."

He looked at Rebecca.

"Richard Sloan never retired."

"He manages Dad's private operations."

Arthur took one step forward.

"That's enough."

Ethan didn't back away.

"He handles the jobs that never appear on company records."

Victoria stared at her brother in disbelief.

"You knew?"

Tears filled Ethan's eyes.

"I told myself I wasn't involved."

"I signed papers."

"I looked the other way."

"I kept believing I could fix it later."

He looked at Celeste.

"I was wrong."

Arthur's voice became cold.

"You have no idea what you're saying."

Ethan slowly reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo.

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

He removed a small silver flash drive.

Rebecca immediately noticed Arthur's reaction.

For the first time all evening...

The billionaire looked genuinely terrified.

Ethan held up the flash drive.

"I copied everything."

Rebecca stepped forward carefully.

"Everything?"

He nodded.

"The hidden accounting system."

"The offshore transfers."

"The payments to Richard Sloan."

"The board meeting where Dad ordered Celeste to be removed."

He swallowed hard.

"And..."

He looked directly at his father.

"The recordings of every private conversation."

Arthur's voice was barely above a whisper.

"You fool."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"I was a fool for six years."

He extended the flash drive toward Rebecca.

Just as she reached for it—

The ballroom lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A woman screamed.

Then a single gunshot echoed through the ballroom.

And someone collapsed to the marble floor.
