Chapter 12: The Final Evidence

Rain continued to fall over the rocky coastline as the Coast Guard helicopters circled overhead.

No one spoke.

Arthur Sterling had escaped.

The man who had controlled one of the country's largest corporations for decades had vanished just as federal agents obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Rebecca Lawson slipped her phone into her pocket.

"Every airport has been notified."

She looked at the tactical commander.

"Borders, private airfields, marinas, everything."

The commander nodded.

"We've also issued a nationwide alert."

Admiral Reed stared into the darkness beyond the cliffs.

"Arthur isn't trying to leave the country."

Rebecca glanced at him.

"You don't think so?"

"No."

"He doesn't run."

"He regroups."

Celeste silently agreed.

Her father had spent his entire life staying ten steps ahead of everyone else.

If he had escaped, it wasn't out of panic.

It was because he already had another plan.

At dawn, the investigation moved to the temporary federal command center established near the lighthouse.

The encrypted flash drive Ethan had hidden sat on the table beside the ammunition case recovered beneath the flagpole.

An FBI cyber specialist connected the drive to an isolated forensic computer.

"Encryption is military-grade," he said.

"Can you open it?"

He smiled slightly.

"It'll take a few minutes."

The room waited.

Finally, the progress bar reached one hundred percent.

The screen filled with folders.

Thousands of files.

Bank statements.

Internal emails.

Corporate ledgers.

Board meeting recordings.

Rebecca leaned closer.

"My God..."

One folder immediately caught her attention.

STERLING - EXECUTIVE AUTHORIZATION

She opened it.

Inside were scanned documents bearing Arthur Sterling's signature.

Each authorized multimillion-dollar transfers to offshore shell companies.

Another folder contained contracts for government infrastructure projects that had never been completed.

The payments had been made.

The work had never existed.

Then came a folder simply labeled:

CONFIDENTIAL

Rebecca clicked.

A video appeared.

Timestamp:

Six Years Earlier

The image showed Arthur's executive office.

The quality was sharp.

A hidden security camera.

Arthur sat behind his desk.

Across from him sat Richard Sloan.

Neither man knew they were being recorded.

Richard spoke first.

"Commander Sterling won't sign."

Arthur calmly poured himself a cup of coffee.

"I expected that."

"What do you want me to do?"

Arthur didn't hesitate.

"Destroy her credibility."

Richard nodded.

"And if that isn't enough?"

Arthur looked out the window.

"Then make sure no one believes anything she ever says again."

The room fell silent.

Rebecca paused the recording.

"This alone could destroy him."

Celeste shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward the remaining folders.

"We're not done."

Another folder opened.

It contained dozens of audio recordings.

Board meetings.

Private phone calls.

Financial discussions.

One recording immediately stood out.

Meeting - Confidential

The voices belonged to Arthur, Daniel Mercer, Richard Sloan, and three unidentified executives.

Arthur spoke first.

"Has Celeste found the offshore accounts?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Yes."

Arthur sighed.

"Then we proceed."

One executive asked,

"Should we offer her a settlement?"

Arthur laughed.

"You still think this is about money?"

Silence.

"My daughter inherited her mother's conscience."

Another executive spoke nervously.

"What if she goes to the authorities?"

Arthur's response chilled everyone in the room.

"She won't."

"Why?"

"Because by tomorrow morning..."

"...she won't have a reputation left to protect."

Rebecca stopped the recording.

No one spoke.

The conspiracy wasn't speculation anymore.

It had been captured in Arthur's own voice.

The cyber specialist continued searching.

"There's another encrypted folder."

"Open it."

After several moments, it unlocked.

The folder contained a single document.

Its title read:

Personal Insurance

Rebecca frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She opened the file.

The first page listed names.

Corporate executives.

Politicians.

Lobbyists.

Foreign business partners.

Each accompanied by dates, account numbers, and payment records.

The room grew quiet.

"This isn't just about Sterling Global," Rebecca whispered.

"It's an entire network."

She turned another page.

More names.

More payments.

Then one final section.

Authorized by: Arthur Sterling

Signed.

Dated.

Witnessed.

Everything investigators had spent years searching for was now sitting in front of them.

Just then, the command center door opened.

Victoria entered quietly.

She looked exhausted.

"I came from the hospital."

Celeste stood immediately.

"How's Ethan?"

"Stable."

She smiled faintly.

"He insisted I bring this."

She handed Celeste a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Ethan's handwriting, were the words:

I Forgot One Thing.

Celeste opened it.

Inside was a single key.

Old.

Brass.

Attached to a faded tag.

Safe Deposit Box 214

There was also a short handwritten note.

Dad never knew about this.

Mom rented it before she died.

She told me to give you the key only if the family ever turned against itself.

I think she knew this day would come.

Rebecca looked up.

"Do we know which bank?"

Victoria nodded.

"Harbor National Bank."

Admiral Reed checked his watch.

"They'll be open in an hour."

Before anyone could leave, Rebecca's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Lawson."

The voice on the other end spoke rapidly.

Her expression changed.

"What happened?"

She listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Celeste recognized the look.

"What is it?"

Rebecca took a deep breath.

"We found Richard Sloan."

Relief spread through the room.

"Where?" Celeste asked.

Rebecca's voice remained steady.

"He turned himself in."

Everyone stared.

"Why?" Admiral Reed asked.

Rebecca swallowed.

"He says Arthur Sterling contacted him an hour ago."

"And?"

"He wants to make a deal."

"What kind of deal?"

Rebecca looked directly at Celeste.

"Richard says Arthur is willing to surrender..."

She paused.

"...but only if he can speak to his oldest daughter."

Silence filled the command center.

After everything that had happened...

After six years of lies...

After betrayal, violence, and attempted murder...

Arthur Sterling wanted only one person.

Celeste.

And somehow...

May you like

She knew this wouldn't be a confession.

It would be the most important confrontation of their lives.
