Chapter 3: The Daughter They Erased

Arthur Sterling's face turned pale.

The room that had been filled with laughter only minutes earlier now stood in stunned silence. Wealthy investors, politicians, and reporters watched as Rebecca Lawson calmly approached the center of the ballroom. The two federal agents behind her remained expressionless, their eyes fixed on Arthur.

Rebecca offered a professional smile.

"Good evening, Mr. Sterling."

Arthur forced one in return.

"I'm afraid you've interrupted a private family matter."

Rebecca didn't flinch.

"On the contrary."

"I believe your family matter is closely connected to ours."

A nervous ripple spread through the crowd.

Arthur straightened his tuxedo.

"My attorneys will gladly arrange a meeting during business hours."

Rebecca nodded politely.

"They already have."

"They declined."

"So tonight, I'm simply here to deliver notice that the Department of Justice has opened a formal investigation into Sterling Global Holdings."

A dozen reporters instinctively reached for their phones.

Arthur's public relations director rushed toward them.

"No photographs!"

"No recordings!"

But it was too late.

The story had already begun spreading.

Arthur glared at Celeste.

"You planned this."

She met his eyes calmly.

"No."

"You did that all by yourself."

Rebecca opened her briefcase and removed a thin folder.

"We're investigating allegations involving securities fraud, offshore shell corporations, falsified government contracts, and obstruction of justice."

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

Several board members exchanged worried glances.

Arthur laughed.

"Anonymous accusations."

"My company has been audited for decades."

Rebecca closed the folder.

"Then I'm sure you'll have no difficulty explaining the missing financial records."

For the first time in years, Arthur had no immediate response.

Across the ballroom, Victoria grabbed Celeste's arm.

"What have you done?"

Celeste slowly pulled away.

"I didn't create his choices."

"I just stopped pretending they never happened."

Victoria's anger boiled over.

"You disappeared!"

"You abandoned us!"

"You walked away from this family!"

Celeste looked at her younger sister with quiet sadness.

"No, Victoria."

"I was pushed out."

Victoria scoffed.

"That's not true."

Celeste took a slow breath.

"You were sixteen."

"They protected you from the truth."

Arthur suddenly interrupted.

"Enough."

His commanding voice echoed through the ballroom.

"She's lying."

"Every word."

He turned toward the guests.

"My oldest daughter left this family because she couldn't accept responsibility."

"She made reckless decisions."

"She disappeared without warning."

"I offered to help."

"She refused."

Several guests nodded uncertainly.

Arthur had always been convincing.

For years, his version of events had become accepted as fact.

Then Celeste spoke.

"Should I tell them what really happened?"

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"There is nothing to tell."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"Are you sure?"

Six Years Earlier...

The Sterling headquarters overlooked downtown Boston from the top floor of a forty-story glass tower.

Twenty-six-year-old Celeste stood inside her father's office, staring at a stack of financial reports spread across his desk.

She had joined Sterling Global only months earlier after completing graduate school.

Arthur had proudly introduced her as the future of the company.

Until she started asking questions.

"These numbers don't match," she had said.

Arthur barely looked up.

"They don't need to."

She frowned.

"Millions of dollars are being transferred between companies that don't actually have employees."

"They're holding companies."

"They exist only on paper."

Arthur calmly sipped his coffee.

"That's how business works."

"No."

"That's how money disappears."

Arthur slowly placed the cup down.

"You've always been intelligent."

"Don't become naïve."

Celeste had picked up another file.

"This government contract..."

"...the equipment was never delivered."

"It was billed."

"It was approved."

"But it doesn't exist."

Arthur finally looked at her.

"You'll forget what you read."

Celeste remembered the coldness in his eyes.

"I can't."

Arthur stood.

"You will."

"I won't sign these reports."

"You don't have a choice."

"I always have a choice."

The silence between them had lasted nearly a full minute.

Finally Arthur walked to the window overlooking the city.

"I built everything this family has."

"I created opportunities people only dream about."

"I won't allow my own daughter to destroy it."

Celeste answered quietly.

"I'm trying to save it."

Arthur turned.

"No."

"You're threatening it."

Three days later, the board held an emergency meeting.

Celeste expected to present evidence.

Instead...

She became the target.

Forged emails appeared.

False expense reports.

Claims that she had leaked confidential information.

Every accusation pointed toward her.

She looked around the conference room in disbelief.

Even Ethan refused to meet her eyes.

Victoria wasn't there.

She had never been told about the meeting.

Arthur stood before the board with practiced sorrow.

"It breaks my heart."

"But my daughter has become unstable."

"I've tried everything."

"I can no longer trust her judgment."

The vote took less than ten minutes.

Celeste was removed from the company.

Her security badge was deactivated before she reached the lobby.

By sunset...

Her bank accounts connected to the family had been frozen.

By morning...

Her apartment lease had been canceled.

By the end of the week...

Every newspaper reported that Celeste Sterling had resigned after "personal difficulties."

Arthur had erased her without ever speaking another word.

Back in the ballroom, tears formed in Victoria's eyes.

She looked at her father.

"Tell me she's lying."

Arthur remained silent.

She turned toward Ethan.

"You knew?"

Ethan lowered his head.

"I..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

That was answer enough.

Victoria slowly stepped backward.

Her entire childhood suddenly felt like a carefully written script.

She had spent six years believing her sister had abandoned them.

Instead...

Her sister had been abandoned.

Celeste reached into her evening clutch.

"I've carried this for six years."

She removed an old Sterling Global employee identification badge.

A crack ran through the plastic.

Arthur immediately recognized it.

"I found it outside the building after security escorted me away."

She placed it on the table beside the unopened hospital letter.

"I kept it to remind myself of one thing."

Arthur stared at it.

"What?"

Celeste's voice was steady.

"The day I lost my family..."

"...was the day I found my purpose."

Before anyone could respond, one of the federal agents walked quickly to Rebecca Lawson and whispered something in her ear.

Rebecca's expression changed instantly.

She looked at Arthur.

"Mr. Sterling..."

"We've just received confirmation."

"The witness we planned to interview tonight..."

"...has disappeared."

The ballroom fell silent once again.

Someone was trying to keep the truth buried.

And everyone in the room knew exactly who would benefit.
