Chapter 4: The Witness Who Vanished

The words hung in the air like smoke.

"The witness has disappeared."

Every conversation in the ballroom stopped.

Arthur Sterling remained perfectly still, but Rebecca Lawson noticed the slight twitch in his jaw. It lasted less than a second, yet it was enough to tell her he understood exactly who she was talking about.

One of the federal agents stepped closer.

"We lost contact with Daniel Mercer approximately forty-five minutes ago."

Rebecca frowned.

"When was he last seen?"

"Leaving his apartment building."

"His vehicle was found abandoned less than three miles away."

The ballroom erupted with anxious whispers.

Daniel Mercer.

The name meant little to most of the guests.

But to Arthur Sterling, it meant disaster.

Mercer had served as Sterling Global's Chief Financial Officer for nearly eighteen years before quietly retiring six months earlier.

Officially, he left because of health concerns.

Unofficially...

He knew where every financial record was buried.

Rebecca looked directly at Arthur.

"Mr. Sterling, did you have any recent contact with Mr. Mercer?"

Arthur answered without hesitation.

"No."

"I haven't spoken to Daniel in months."

Rebecca studied his expression.

"Interesting."

"Because Mr. Mercer requested federal protection three days ago."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"I wasn't aware."

"He specifically stated he feared retaliation from people connected to Sterling Global."

A hush swept across the ballroom.

Several board members suddenly looked uncomfortable.

One executive quietly set down his champagne glass.

Another slipped toward the exit, only to find a federal agent standing near the door.

No one was leaving.

Across the room, Victoria stared at her father.

"Dad..."

Her voice trembled.

"Who is Daniel Mercer?"

Arthur forced a reassuring smile.

"A retired accountant."

"Nothing more."

Celeste spoke before Victoria could respond.

"He wasn't just an accountant."

"He taught me everything I knew about corporate finance."

Victoria turned toward her.

"You know him?"

Celeste nodded.

"When I first joined the company, he warned me to question everything."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"That's enough."

Celeste ignored him.

"Daniel used to tell me that numbers never lie."

She looked around the ballroom.

"People do."

Several guests lowered their eyes.

The statement landed harder than anyone expected.

Rebecca opened another folder from her briefcase.

"We obtained a search warrant this afternoon."

Arthur crossed his arms.

"For what?"

"The executive archives located beneath Sterling Global Headquarters."

Arthur's confidence returned.

"You won't find anything."

Rebecca gave a small smile.

"I hope you're right."

She paused.

"But according to Mr. Mercer..."

"...there's a private records vault that doesn't appear on any architectural plans."

For the first time all evening...

Arthur looked genuinely alarmed.

Celeste noticed immediately.

So did Rebecca.

The prosecutor quietly closed the folder.

"Thank you."

Arthur blinked.

"For what?"

Rebecca smiled.

"You just confirmed the vault exists."

His face went pale.

At the back of the ballroom, Ethan wiped sweat from his forehead.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He hesitated before answering.

"Hello?"

A distorted voice whispered through the speaker.

"They're searching the building."

Ethan's heartbeat quickened.

"What?"

"The vault."

"They know."

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the dark screen.

Someone inside the company was warning him.

Someone knew the investigation had reached the point of no return.

Admiral Reed quietly stepped beside Celeste.

"You expected this."

She nodded once.

"My father never leaves loose ends."

"You think Mercer is alive?"

Celeste looked toward the ballroom windows.

"I hope so."

"But if he's missing..."

"...it's because he finally decided to tell the truth."

The admiral folded his arms.

"You've been preparing for this for years."

"I had to."

"You never told anyone."

"I couldn't."

He understood.

Much of Celeste's military service remained classified.

She had learned patience.

Discipline.

Silence.

Those lessons had kept people alive overseas.

Now they might expose corruption at home.

Arthur suddenly raised his voice.

"Everyone, please."

"This evening has been filled with outrageous accusations."

"I'm asking my guests to remain calm."

He smiled toward the crowd.

"My company has nothing to hide."

A reporter near the front spoke up.

"Then would you consent to releasing Sterling Global's offshore financial records?"

Arthur's smile faded.

"Those documents are confidential."

Another reporter asked,

"Did your oldest daughter actually report financial misconduct six years ago?"

"No."

"Did you remove her from the company?"

"No."

"Did you receive letters while she was recovering in the hospital?"

Arthur's patience finally cracked.

"I don't answer questions based on rumors."

Rebecca calmly interrupted.

"Good."

"You can answer them under oath."

The ballroom fell silent once again.

Victoria slowly walked toward Celeste.

For the first time in years...

There was no anger in her face.

Only confusion.

"Why didn't you fight back?"

Celeste looked at her younger sister.

"I tried."

"No..."

Victoria shook her head.

"I mean afterward."

"You disappeared."

Celeste's eyes softened.

"I had two choices."

"I could spend my life proving them wrong..."

"...or become someone they could never ignore."

Victoria glanced at the scars across Celeste's back.

"You chose the Navy."

"I chose a place where honor mattered more than money."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

"I believed everything they told me."

"I know."

"Can you forgive me?"

Celeste answered honestly.

"I don't know yet."

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Trust wasn't rebuilt in a single conversation.

Especially after six years.

One of the federal agents suddenly received a message through his earpiece.

His expression sharpened.

He immediately turned to Rebecca.

"We've got something."

Rebecca stepped closer.

"What is it?"

"The search team just entered the executive archives."

She waited.

"They found the hidden elevator."

Arthur's breathing stopped for half a second.

Rebecca noticed.

"So..."

She said quietly.

"The vault was real after all."

The agent continued listening.

His eyes widened.

"Ma'am..."

"They've opened the vault."

Rebecca held her breath.

"What did they find?"

The agent swallowed.

"Thousands of financial records."

He paused.

"And..."

Rebecca frowned.

"What else?"

The agent looked directly at Arthur Sterling before answering.

"A locked fireproof cabinet."

"With Commander Celeste Sterling's name printed on the front."

Every person in the ballroom turned toward Celeste.

Even she looked stunned.

She had no idea why her father had secretly kept a cabinet bearing her name for six long years.

May you like

And suddenly...

She wasn't sure she wanted to know.
