Chapter 4 — The Secret Buried Beneath the Hawthorne Name

Chapter 4 — The Secret Buried Beneath the Hawthorne Name

The atmosphere inside Hawthorne Palace had changed.

Only twenty-four hours earlier, the halls had been filled with music, laughter, and the sound of celebration.

Now, the entire mansion felt different.

Employees whispered quietly.

Security guards moved through the corridors.

Important documents were being reviewed.

Something had disturbed the peace of the Hawthorne family.

And everyone knew it was connected to Victoria Whitmore.

Clara Bennett stood outside Alexander Hawthorne’s office, holding a tray of tea for Eleanor.

She had accepted the position as Eleanor’s personal assistant that morning, though she still felt like she had stepped into someone else’s life.

Yesterday, she was a maid who cleaned rooms and served guests.

Today, she was trusted with the care of one of the most respected women in the city.

But something about the situation bothered her.

The way Alexander reacted to the missing files.

The way Eleanor became quiet when family records were mentioned.

There was a story nobody was telling.

And Clara could feel it.

She knocked gently.

“Come in,” Eleanor called.

Clara entered and found Eleanor looking through an old photo album.

The elderly woman smiled.

“Perfect timing.”

Clara placed the tea on the table.

“Is there anything else you need, Mrs. Hawthorne?”

Eleanor looked up.

“You still call me Mrs. Hawthorne.”

Clara smiled awkwardly.

“It feels strange to call you Eleanor.”

“Then perhaps you should get used to it.”

Clara laughed softly.

Eleanor opened the photo album.

“Do you know what people misunderstand about wealthy families?”

Clara looked curious.

“What?”

“They think money removes pain.”

Eleanor touched an old photograph.

“But every family has wounds. Some are just better at hiding them.”

Clara noticed the sadness in her eyes.

“Is this about the files that were stolen?”

Eleanor became quiet.

For a moment, Clara wondered if she had asked too much.

But then Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

“What was in them?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Things from the past.”

Before Clara could ask more, the office door opened.

Alexander walked in.

His expression was serious.

“Mother, we need to talk.”

Eleanor immediately understood.

“About Victoria?”

Alexander nodded.

“She made her move.”

Clara stood quietly.

“I can leave.”

“No,” Alexander said.

The answer surprised her.

He looked at her.

“You’re involved now.”

Clara frowned.

“I am?”

Alexander placed a folder on the desk.

“This morning, Victoria’s legal team requested access to certain records connected to the charity foundation.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“She wouldn’t have any reason to do that.”

Alexander looked at the folder.

“Unless she knows what she’s searching for.”

Clara listened carefully.

“What is she searching for?”

Alexander hesitated.

For the first time since Clara met him, he looked uncertain.

“That is the problem.”

Eleanor closed the photo album.

“She knows about Thomas.”

The name changed the entire mood in the room.

Clara noticed it immediately.

“Who is Thomas?”

Neither of them answered right away.

Finally, Alexander spoke.

“My younger brother.”

Clara looked surprised.

“You have a brother?”

“Had.”

The single word carried pain.

Eleanor looked down.

“Thomas disappeared twelve years ago.”

The room became silent.

Clara slowly realized.

“And Victoria knows about him?”

Alexander nodded.

“She found something connected to him.”

“Something that could hurt your family?”

Alexander looked at the folder.

“Yes.”

Across the city, Victoria Whitmore sat inside a private club surrounded by powerful people.

She had invited several influential friends.

Business owners.

Lawyers.

Politicians.

People who knew how to control stories.

She placed a document on the table.

“This is what the Hawthornes have been hiding.”

A woman across from her picked up the paper.

Her eyes widened.

“Is this real?”

Victoria smiled.

“Very real.”

The woman continued reading.

“If this gets out…”

“It will destroy their perfect image.”

Victoria took a sip of champagne.

“Alexander Hawthorne believes he can humiliate me in front of everyone.”

She leaned closer.

“He forgot one thing.”

“What?”

“I know how to destroy people.”

Back at Hawthorne Palace, Alexander stood alone in his office after Clara and Eleanor left.

He opened a locked drawer.

Inside was an old photograph.

Three people stood together.

A younger Alexander.

A younger Eleanor.

And a teenage boy smiling beside them.

Thomas Hawthorne.

Alexander stared at the picture.

For years, he had tried to protect his brother’s memory.

He had promised his mother he would never let the world know what happened.

But now Victoria had discovered the truth.

A truth that could ruin everything they had built.

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Alexander answered.

“Hello?”

A voice spoke on the other end.

“You should have apologized to Victoria.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Who is this?”

The person laughed softly.

“You protected a maid and embarrassed a powerful woman.”

A pause.

“Now you’ll learn what happens when you make enemies.”

The call ended.

Alexander slowly lowered the phone.

Then he noticed something.

The office window.

It was slightly open.

And on his desk…

was a single envelope.

He had not put it there.

Inside was a handwritten message.

"The past always returns."

Alexander stared at the words.

Because he knew exactly what they meant.

Someone had entered his home.

Someone had found his secret.

And someone was determined to bring down the Hawthorne family.

Meanwhile, Clara walked through the hallway with Eleanor, unaware that her life had just become connected to a battle between two powerful forces.

A battle where loyalty would be tested.

Trust would be broken.

And hidden truths would finally come to light.
