Chapter 14 — The Truth Behind Eleanor’s Silence

Chapter 14 — The Truth Behind Eleanor’s Silence

The document sat on the table.

No one touched it.

No one dared.

Because the name written at the bottom changed everything.

Eleanor Hawthorne.

The woman who had spent twelve years waiting for Thomas.

The woman who had always been the heart of the Hawthorne family.

The woman everyone believed had been protecting them.

Now she was connected to the secret that destroyed them.

Alexander stared at his mother.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Mom…”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

She looked older than she had ever looked before.

Not because of her age.

Because of the weight she had carried for years.

“I knew this day would come.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You knew?”

The pain in his voice was obvious.

“You knew what happened?”

Eleanor looked at her youngest son.

“Yes.”

The answer shattered the room.

Alexander picked up the document again.

“Explain.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I will.”

Her voice trembled.

“But you need to understand something first.”

“What?”

“I never betrayed this family.”

Thomas laughed sadly.

“Then why is your signature there?”

Eleanor looked down.

“Because I was trying to save it.”

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Edward stepped forward.

“She’s telling the truth.”

Alexander turned toward his father.

“You knew?”

Edward nodded.

“I did.”

Alexander’s frustration grew.

“So everyone knew except me?”

The silence answered him.

And that hurt more than anything.

Eleanor sat down slowly.

“Twenty years ago, before you took over the company, there were people trying to gain control of the Hawthorne empire.”

Alexander listened.

“One of them was Richard Whitmore.”

Victoria’s expression remained calm.

“My father.”

Eleanor nodded.

“He wanted influence. Power. Control.”

Edward continued.

“He created partnerships that looked legitimate.”

“But they weren’t,” Thomas said.

“No.”

Edward looked at him.

“They were designed to slowly take ownership of everything we built.”

Alexander looked at the document.

“Then why sign it?”

Eleanor answered.

“Because I needed proof.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I knew Richard was planning something. But suspicion wasn’t enough.”

She touched the paper.

“This agreement was a trap.”

“A trap?”

“Yes.”

“I signed it because I knew Richard would become careless if he thought he was winning.”

Alexander looked confused.

“You were gathering evidence.”

Eleanor nodded.

“For years.”

Thomas looked away.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because you were too young.”

“I was an adult.”

“You were my son.”

The words softened the anger between them.

“You wanted to expose everything immediately.”

Thomas remembered.

“And you stopped me.”

“Yes.”

“Because you thought I would get hurt.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I was right.”

Victoria suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“This is touching.”

Her voice was cold.

“A family reunion. Tears. Forgiveness.”

She stepped closer.

“But there is one thing you’re forgetting.”

Alexander looked at her.

“What?”

“You still don’t know who actually betrayed you.”

The room became quiet.

Victoria smiled.

“Your mother collected evidence.”

She looked at Eleanor.

“Your father disappeared.”

Then she looked at Thomas.

“You ran away.”

Finally, she looked at Marcus.

“And your security chief hid the truth.”

She paused.

“So who really benefited?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had the same thought.

Suddenly, Marcus’s phone rang.

Everyone turned.

Marcus checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Alexander asked.

Marcus hesitated.

Then handed him the phone.

A message appeared.

"You are running out of time."

Below it was a photograph.

A photograph taken inside the palace.

The picture showed Eleanor.

Standing beside someone.

Someone from years ago.

Alexander looked closer.

His face changed.

Because the person beside his mother was not Edward.

Not Thomas.

Not Marcus.

It was someone else.

Someone believed to be dead.

“Who is that?” Clara asked.

Nobody answered.

Because Alexander recognized him.

The man in the photograph had been one of the most trusted advisors of the Hawthorne family.

A man who disappeared shortly after Edward’s supposed death.

A man connected to the original investigation.

A man named—

Samuel Carter.

Edward’s expression became serious.

“Impossible.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You know him?”

Edward nodded slowly.

“He was my closest friend.”

“Then why does my mother have a picture with him?”

Edward looked at Eleanor.

She said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

Later that evening, Eleanor finally revealed the truth.

She had met Samuel after Edward disappeared.

She had asked him for help.

Because she knew someone inside their organization was working with Richard Whitmore.

But Samuel discovered too much.

And he vanished.

“I thought he was dead,” Eleanor whispered.

Thomas looked at her.

“Apparently, everyone in this family has a habit of coming back.”

Nobody smiled.

Because the mystery was getting deeper.

At midnight, Alexander received another message.

This time, there was a video.

He pressed play.

The screen showed Samuel Carter.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

His voice filled the room.

“Alexander…”

Everyone gathered around.

“I know you’re searching for answers.”

He paused.

“But the truth is not what you think.”

Alexander watched closely.

Samuel continued:

“The person who betrayed the Hawthorne family was not trying to steal the company.”

A pause.

“They were trying to destroy the family from within.”

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

"Ask your father what happened the night Thomas disappeared."

Everyone turned toward Edward.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Dad…”

Edward looked away.

Because he knew.

The secret from twelve years ago was finally coming back.

May you like

And this time…

there was nowhere left to hide.
