Chapter 18 — The Choice That Broke a Family

Chapter 18 — The Choice That Broke a Family
The message remained on the screen.
“Ask Eleanor why she chose me over Alexander.”
No one spoke.
The words felt heavier than any accusation that had come before.
Alexander slowly turned toward his mother.

For his entire life, Eleanor Hawthorne had been the person he trusted most.
She had been his guide.
His protector.
The person who always told him to choose compassion over pride.
But now…
there was a question hanging between them.
A question that had waited twelve years to be answered.
“Mom.”
His voice was quiet.
Almost afraid.
“What did Thomas mean?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
She knew this moment would come.
She just never knew it would hurt this much.
Thomas looked at his mother.
“Why would I say that?”
Eleanor looked at him sadly.
“Because you believed it was true.”
“Wasn’t it?”
The pain in his voice was obvious.
“I spent twelve years thinking you chose me because you trusted me more.”
Alexander looked between them.
“I don’t understand.”
Eleanor reached for the chair beside her and slowly sat down.
“Because the truth is complicated.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became stronger.
“The truth is simple.”
He looked at Alexander.
“You were always the chosen one.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“You were the future of this family.”
He looked at the palace around him.
“The company. The reputation. The legacy.”
Then he looked at himself.
“I was the son who asked too many questions.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“That is not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
Thomas looked at her.
“You protected Alexander because he carried the family name.”
A pause.
“And you protected me because you felt sorry for me.”
The words broke her heart.
“Thomas…”
But he stepped back.
“No, Mom. I need to know.”
The entire room became silent.
Eleanor looked at both of her sons.
“You were both my children.”
Alexander nodded.
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t.”
She looked at him.
“Because twelve years ago, I had to make an impossible choice.”
Alexander froze.
“What choice?”
Eleanor took a deep breath.
“The night Thomas discovered the truth, someone threatened him.”
Thomas looked surprised.
“You never told me that.”
“Because I promised I would protect you.”
She continued.
“The person behind the financial crimes knew Thomas had evidence.”
Alexander’s expression changed.
“And they wanted him gone.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Thomas looked at her.
“So why did I leave?”
Eleanor looked down.
“Because I asked you to.”
The room went silent.
Thomas stepped backward.
“You…”
His voice broke.
“You told me to disappear?”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“I did.”
Alexander looked shocked.
“Why?”
“Because they were going to kill him.”
The words froze everyone.
Eleanor continued.
“I received a warning.”
She looked at Thomas.
“They told me if Thomas exposed the evidence, he would not survive.”
Thomas stared at her.
“And you thought sending me away was the only option?”
“Yes.”
“Without telling Alexander?”
Eleanor looked at her oldest son.
“Because Alexander would have tried to fight.”
Alexander said nothing.
Because he knew she was right.
He would have.
Thomas looked devastated.
“All these years…”
He swallowed.
“I thought you chose me.”
Eleanor cried.
“I chose to save you.”
The anger on Thomas’s face slowly faded.
But the pain remained.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“You should have trusted Alexander.”
“I know.”
“Instead, you carried the burden alone.”
Eleanor looked down.
“Yes.”
For the first time in years, the two brothers understood each other.
Alexander walked toward Thomas.
“You thought you were protecting us.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.”
“And I thought I failed you.”
A long silence followed.
Then Thomas whispered:
“I never blamed you.”
Alexander looked surprised.
“I blamed myself.”
The brothers stood there, finally seeing the truth.
They had both spent twelve years carrying guilt that belonged to someone else.
Suddenly, Marcus entered the room.
“We found Victoria.”
Everyone turned.
Alexander immediately looked at him.
“Where?”
“She’s leaving through the private airfield.”
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“She’s running.”
Marcus nodded.
“She knows the evidence is exposed.”
Alexander looked toward the exit.
“We stop her.”
At the private airfield, Victoria stood beside a waiting aircraft.
She looked calm.
Almost peaceful.
Daniel stood several feet away.
He had followed them.
“You knew I would find out.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“You used me.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“I used everyone.”
Daniel looked hurt.
“Even me?”
She didn’t answer.
And that was the answer.
Seconds later, Alexander, Thomas, Marcus, and Clara arrived.
Victoria looked at them.
“Finally.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“It’s over.”
Victoria laughed.
“No.”
She looked at Eleanor.
“It ends when everyone knows the truth.”
Eleanor walked forward.
“You wanted revenge.”
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Yes.”
“Then why keep hurting people who had nothing to do with your pain?”
Victoria became silent.
Because for the first time, she had no perfect answer.
Alexander looked at her.
“You could have exposed the truth.”
“Yes.”
“You could have fought legally.”
“Yes.”
“But you chose destruction.”
Victoria looked away.
Because deep down, she knew.
She had crossed the line long before tonight.
Before anyone could say more, police vehicles arrived.
Marcus had already contacted authorities.
The evidence.
The documents.
The recordings.
Everything had been transferred.
Victoria looked at Alexander.
“You think you won.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“I think everyone lost something.”
The words surprised her.
Alexander continued:
“But maybe we finally stop lying.”
As Victoria was escorted away, she looked back at the Hawthorne family.
A family that had been broken by secrets.
But a family that was finally facing the truth.
And for the first time in twelve years…
the Hawthorne name was no longer built on silence.
But the final mystery remained.
Because one question still had not been answered.
May you like
Who was the person who originally started the betrayal?
And why had they spent so many years hiding?
