Chapter 12 — The Confession in the Darkness

Chapter 12 — The Confession in the Darkness

The abandoned building was silent.

Dust floated through the air as the weak light from broken windows fell across the empty floor.

Alexander Hawthorne stood frozen.

Clara stood beside him, unable to move.

Because the person standing in front of them was someone they never expected to see there.

Someone they had trusted.

Someone who had been protecting the Hawthorne family for years.

Marcus Reed.

The head of security.

The man Alexander once considered a brother.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Alexander’s voice broke the silence.

“Marcus…”

Marcus looked down.

“I knew this day would come.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“You were the one who called me here?”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked at Clara.

Then back at Alexander.

“Because you deserve to know the truth before Victoria tells her version.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“You expect me to believe you?”

Marcus accepted the anger.

“I expected you to hate me.”

Clara looked between them.

“Mr. Reed, why are we here?”

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Because the person behind everything is closer than you think.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Marcus looked away.

“I can’t tell you yet.”

Alexander’s anger grew.

“You bring us here, admit you’re hiding something, and still refuse to answer?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Because if I say the name, everything changes.”

Alexander walked closer.

“For twelve years, I trusted you.”

“I know.”

“You protected my family.”

“I know.”

“You were the person I depended on when Thomas disappeared.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

Pain crossed his face.

“And that is why I need you to listen.”

The room became quiet.

Marcus continued.

“Twelve years ago, when Thomas vanished, I knew something was wrong.”

Alexander froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Because Thomas made me promise.”

The words shocked Alexander.

“Promise what?”

“To protect you.”

Clara looked confused.

“Thomas asked you to hide the truth?”

Marcus nodded.

“He knew someone was watching the family. Someone powerful.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked toward the broken window.

“Someone who could destroy everything.”

Alexander shook his head.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

“It will.”

Marcus reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this for twelve years.”

Alexander stared at it.

“What is it?”

“Something Thomas gave me before he disappeared.”

Alexander slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Thomas.

Alexander read the first lines.

"Marcus, if you are reading this, it means I was right. They found me."

Alexander’s hands tightened.

He continued reading.

"Do not tell Alexander everything unless you know who is safe. He will try to fix everything himself, and that will put him in danger."

Alexander stopped.

Because those words sounded exactly like his brother.

Clara watched him silently.

For the first time, she saw Alexander without his usual confidence.

Not the billionaire.

Not the powerful businessman.

Just a brother who had spent twelve years believing he failed someone he loved.

Marcus spoke softly.

“Thomas didn’t leave because he hated this family.”

Alexander looked up.

“Then why?”

“Because he believed leaving was the only way to keep you alive.”

At Hawthorne Palace, Eleanor sat in the library waiting.

She knew something had happened.

A mother always knew.

When Thomas returned, she had felt happiness.

But now she felt something else.

A warning.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

She answered carefully.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice spoke.

“Mother.”

Eleanor froze.

“Thomas?”

“No.”

Her face changed.

The voice was different.

Cold.

“You should have let the past stay buried.”

Eleanor stood immediately.

“Who is this?”

The caller laughed.

“Someone who knows your family better than you think.”

The call ended.

Back at the abandoned building, Alexander finished reading Thomas’s letter.

Near the end was one sentence that made his blood run cold.

"The person you trust most may be the one who knows how to hurt you the most."

Alexander looked at Marcus.

“Is this about you?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marcus hesitated.

And this time, his hesitation was different.

It was fear.

“Alexander…”

A sudden sound interrupted him.

A vehicle outside.

Someone approaching.

Marcus immediately became alert.

“We need to leave.”

Alexander looked toward the entrance.

“Who is it?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The doors slowly opened.

A figure stepped inside.

Clara recognized the voice before seeing the face.

“Victoria.”

The socialite walked into the building wearing a confident smile.

“You really thought you could uncover the truth without me?”

Alexander stared at her.

“How did you find us?”

Victoria smiled.

“Because I knew where you would go.”

Thomas’s warning suddenly made sense.

Someone was always one step ahead.

Victoria looked at Marcus.

“Well done.”

Alexander’s eyes moved between them.

“What?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Oh, Alexander…”

She walked closer.

“You still don’t understand.”

She pointed toward Marcus.

“He wasn’t protecting you.”

The room became silent.

“He was protecting the secret.”

Marcus’s face changed.

Victoria smiled.

“And now it’s time everyone learns what really happened twelve years ago.”

At that exact moment, Alexander’s phone rang.

It was Eleanor.

He answered immediately.

“Mother?”

Her voice was shaking.

“Alexander…”

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Someone came to the palace.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Who?”

Eleanor whispered:

“Your father.”

May you like

Everyone froze.

Because Alexander’s father had been dead for years.
