Chapter 3: The Trial Everyone Was Watching
Three months later, every major news outlet crowded outside the courthouse.
Inside, Vanessa insisted she had acted in self-defense.
The prosecutor simply played the staircase video.
Then another recording.
Vanessa's own voice echoed through the courtroom.
"If she loses that baby, Richard gets everything."
Gasps filled the gallery.
Richard closed his eyes.
He had never known Vanessa recorded every conversation.
Next came financial records.
Secret payments.
Bribed employees.
Forged medical reports claiming Evelyn was mentally unstable.
One witness after another destroyed the defense.
Finally, Detective Ruiz called the last witness.
The caretaker.
With tears in her eyes, she admitted the truth.
"I believed the wrong person."
She turned toward Evelyn.
"I failed you."
Evelyn smiled gently.
"You corrected it."
That was enough.
After only four hours of deliberation...
The jury returned.
"Guilty."
Vanessa collapsed as the sentence was read.
Richard wasn't celebrating.
