Chapter 1: The Call She Had Been Waiting to Make

The caretaker froze when the front door burst open.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Four uniformed officers rushed inside, followed by Detective Daniel Ruiz, whose sharp eyes immediately swept across the grand foyer.

The blonde woman, Vanessa, stopped crying at once.

"W-What is this?" she stammered.

Ruiz ignored her. His gaze landed on the pregnant woman lying at the bottom of the staircase.

"Ma'am, don't move. The ambulance is outside."

The caretaker blinked in confusion.

"You... you already knew?"

The pregnant woman finally looked up.

A faint smile crossed her lips.

"I've been waiting three months for this moment."

Vanessa's face turned white.

Ruiz slowly removed a folder from his coat.

"We've been investigating multiple attempts to force Mrs. Evelyn Carter into losing her inheritance."

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous! She fell by herself!"

Ruiz nodded.

"That's what you'll want everyone to believe."

He pointed toward the chandelier.

"Officer."

One officer reached up toward what looked like an ordinary smoke detector.

Instead, he removed a tiny hidden camera.

Vanessa's breathing stopped.

Ruiz pressed play.

Every second appeared on the screen.

Vanessa screaming.

Vanessa looking around.

Vanessa placing both hands on Evelyn's back.

And the violent shove.

Silence swallowed the mansion.

The caretaker slowly stepped away from Vanessa.

"You... you pushed her."

Vanessa shook her head wildly.

"No... that's edited!"

Ruiz smiled.

"We recovered the original cloud backup before arriving."

Then another officer entered carrying a cardboard box.

"We found the burner phones in her bedroom."

Vanessa's knees nearly gave out.

But Ruiz wasn't finished.

"Mrs. Carter... I think it's time."

Evelyn reached into her coat pocket and handed him a tiny recording device.

"For the last ninety-two days," she said quietly, "I've recorded every threat."

Vanessa suddenly realized...

May you like

The fall had never been part of her plan.

It had become the evidence that destroyed everything.
