Chapter 15 - The House Rebecca Chose.

Rebecca had bought the house secretly.

Daniel learned that from Samuel.

It was a modest cedar home two hours north of the city, overlooking a narrow lake.

Rebecca had purchased it through her own trust six months before she died.

Daniel stood in the small living room holding Rosie while Elise carried Maisie.

Nothing matched.

The sofa was blue.

The kitchen cabinets were old.

A crooked brass lamp leaned beside the window.

Daniel loved it immediately.

On the refrigerator was a photograph.

Rebecca stood on the porch holding a set of keys.

Elise was beside her.

Daniel turned.

"You knew about this too."

Elise winced.

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

"Of course you did."

"Rebecca planned to bring you here."

"When?"

"After the twins' first birthday."

"Why wait?"

"Because she wanted you to choose it."

Daniel looked around.

"She bought it."

"She wanted you to choose the life."

That silenced him.

The twins adjusted faster than Daniel did.

By evening, Maisie was crawling beneath the coffee table.

Rosie had discovered a basket of wooden spoons.

Elise cooked pasta while Daniel assembled two portable cribs badly.

One side collapsed.

Elise looked over.

"That seems safe."

Daniel stared at the folded crib.

"Do not start."

She smiled.

For ten minutes, the house felt almost ordinary.

Then Cole arrived.

He carried three boxes from their father's private storage.

"I found these behind the old corporate archives."

Daniel opened the first box.

Inside were files on employees, relatives, doctors, journalists, and former partners.

His father had kept leverage on everyone.

The second box contained payment ledgers.

The third contained personal recordings.

Cole sat on the floor.

"We grew up thinking Dad knew everything because he was smart."

Daniel looked at the boxes.

"He knew everything because he collected everyone's worst day."

Cole nodded.

One folder carried Evelyn's name.

Inside was a copy of a letter she had written years earlier.

Daniel read it.

Her husband had threatened to cut her off from both sons if she challenged his medical arrangements.

Daniel's anger became confused.

"She was afraid of him."

Cole looked exhausted.

"Maybe."

"That does not excuse Rebecca."

"No."

"But it explains why she became him."

Cole nodded.

Daniel found another envelope.

It contained a photograph of Hale entering a hotel with Evelyn two days before Rebecca's crash.

On the back, Rebecca had written:

If Daniel sees this, tell him the problem is bigger than blame.

Daniel stared at the words.

Elise came closer.

"She wanted you to understand before you punished."

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"She always made things harder."

"No."

Elise looked at the twins playing on the rug.

"She made them human."

A phone rang.

It was Cole's.

He answered.

His face drained.

"What?"

Daniel stood.

Cole lowered the phone.

"Hale was arrested trying to leave the country."

Daniel exhaled.

Cole did not look relieved.

"That is not all."

He held out the phone.

"Hale says he has proof Rebecca discovered everything because someone inside the family helped her."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

May you like

Cole's eyes filled with shame.

"Me."
