Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Threat.

Daniel did not go alone.

He brought Samuel.

He brought the documents.

And he brought the yellow gloves folded inside his coat pocket.

Elise stayed with the twins.

Before he left, she said only one thing.

"Do not let her decide which version of you enters that room."

The Carter Holdings boardroom was already full when Daniel arrived.

Evelyn sat in his chair.

Cole stood near the windows.

No one offered Daniel a seat.

Evelyn spoke first.

"You received my message."

"I did."

"And ignored the instruction."

"I am getting better at that."

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

Evelyn placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs of Daniel leaving the townhouse with police behind him.

There was also a statement from a private family consultant describing Daniel as erratic after Rebecca's death.

Daniel recognized the consultant's name.

Dr. Martin Hale.

His anger rose.

He did not show it.

Evelyn watched closely.

"Your daughters require stability."

"They have it."

"With a nanny who concealed her role in your wife's accident?"

Cole looked at Daniel.

The board members whispered.

Daniel understood the trap.

If he exploded, Evelyn won.

If he defended Elise emotionally, Evelyn would call him manipulated.

So he opened Samuel's folder.

"Dr. Hale received undisclosed payments from Carter family entities while treating my wife."

Silence spread around the table.

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

Daniel continued.

"My wife documented medication irregularities."

A director leaned forward.

"Are you accusing the company?"

"I am demanding an independent investigation."

Evelyn laughed softly.

"You are proving my point."

"No."

Daniel looked directly at her.

"I am proving Rebecca's."

Samuel distributed copies of the voting proxies.

Rebecca's shares had transferred into a trust for the twins.

Until they reached adulthood, the independent trustee controlled the vote.

That trustee was Samuel.

Evelyn read the document.

Her face finally lost its calm.

Samuel spoke.

"I vote against removing Daniel Carter."

Cole raised his hand.

"So do I."

One by one, enough directors followed.

The emergency motion failed.

Evelyn closed the folder.

"This is not over."

Daniel stood.

"For the first time, we agree."

His phone vibrated.

Elise.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel, someone is at the apartment."

His body tensed.

"Who?"

"A child welfare investigator."

Evelyn's expression changed before Daniel said another word.

That was all he needed.

He looked at his mother.

"You called them."

"I reported a legitimate concern."

Daniel's voice became very quiet.

"You used my daughters."

"I protected them."

"No."

He walked toward the door.

"You used them because you lost a vote."

Evelyn called after him.

"If that investigator sees Elise there after everything she hid, you may lose more than a board seat."

Daniel stopped.

For one second, fear nearly pulled him backward.

Then he remembered Maisie's laughter.

Rosie's hand reaching for the bear.

Rebecca's warning.

He turned.

"If I lose everything by telling the truth, then at least my daughters will grow up knowing what truth looks like."

He left the room.

Cole followed.

Behind them, Evelyn picked up her phone.

She dialed one number.

"Hale."

Her voice was low.

"Daniel found the payments."

May you like

A pause.

"Fix it before he finds the original records."
