Chapter 12 - The Woman at the Door.

The investigator introduced herself as Marissa Lane.

She was calm, direct, and unimpressed by wealth.

Daniel respected her immediately.

She asked to see the nursery.

She asked who slept where.

She asked who handled feedings, medical appointments, and nighttime care.

Daniel answered every question.

Elise answered only when asked.

Marissa watched the twins closely.

Maisie crawled toward Elise.

Rosie reached for Daniel.

That small difference hurt more than he expected.

Marissa noticed.

"Which child usually comes to you first?"

Daniel did not lie.

"Rosie lately."

"And Maisie?"

"Usually Elise."

Elise looked at him.

Daniel continued.

"I made myself hard to reach after my wife died."

Marissa raised an eyebrow.

"Emotionally?"

"Yes."

"Physically?"

"I worked too much."

Evelyn's complaint had described Daniel as volatile and detached.

It had described Elise as secretive and dangerously influential.

Daniel handed Marissa Rebecca's letter.

He also gave her the police incident number from the townhouse.

Marissa read without expression.

Then she watched Elise put on one yellow glove.

Maisie smiled immediately.

"That is the behavior your mother described as disturbing?"

Daniel almost laughed.

"Apparently."

Marissa knelt near the crib.

"What does the glove do?"

Elise made the puppet bow.

Maisie giggled.

"It helps them transition when they are upset."

Marissa stood.

"That looks like caregiving."

Daniel exhaled for what felt like the first time all morning.

Then the doorbell rang.

Dr. Martin Hale stood outside.

Daniel stared at the monitor.

Marissa looked at him.

"Were you expecting someone?"

"No."

Hale entered only after Marissa agreed to remain.

He was silver-haired, careful, and soft-spoken.

He looked exactly like the kind of man people trusted with private pain.

"Daniel, I heard there has been confusion."

Daniel said nothing.

Hale placed a medical file on the table.

"Rebecca experienced severe anxiety."

Elise's eyes narrowed.

"She told me you would say that."

Hale looked at her as though she were a child interrupting adults.

"Ms. Navarro, grief can create narratives."

Daniel opened the file.

Several pages carried Rebecca's signature.

One consent form approved medication changes.

Elise stepped closer.

"That is not her signature."

Hale smiled sadly.

"I treated her."

"I watched her sign birthday cards."

Daniel studied the page.

Rebecca always crossed the second stroke of her capital R.

This signature did not.

His pulse quickened.

Marissa noticed his face.

"What is it?"

Daniel placed Rebecca's real letter beside the consent form.

The signatures were visibly different.

Hale stopped smiling.

Daniel looked at him.

"You came here to prove my wife was unstable."

"No."

"You brought forged paperwork into my home."

Hale reached for the file.

Marissa put one hand over it.

"Leave it."

Hale's calm expression cracked.

His phone vibrated.

The screen lit before he could hide it.

EVELYN CARTER.

Daniel saw the name.

So did Marissa.

Hale turned toward the door.

Daniel spoke behind him.

"If you walk out without explaining those signatures, the next conversation will not happen in my nursery."

Hale stopped.

May you like

Then he whispered.

"You have no idea what your mother asked me to do."
