Chapter 10 - The Price of Silence.

Daniel opened the envelope at the dining table.

Inside were copies of bank transfers stretching back nearly twenty years.

Some were small.

Others were not.

Every payment came from a Carter family holding company.

Every payment went to people Daniel did not recognize.

Samuel pointed to one name.

"Dr. Martin Hale."

Daniel knew it.

Hale had treated Rebecca after the twins were born.

"He was her psychiatrist."

"He was also your father's private physician for twelve years."

Daniel looked up.

"No."

Samuel slid another document forward.

It was a consulting agreement.

Hale had received monthly payments from the Carter family office long after Daniel's father died.

Elise returned quietly from the hallway.

Daniel did not ask her to leave.

Samuel continued.

"Rebecca discovered the payments after Hale increased her medication without telling her."

Daniel's stomach turned.

"Why would my father pay him?"

Samuel opened another folder.

"Because Hale handled problems."

The phrase sounded obscene.

"What kind of problems?"

"Executives with addiction."

"Affairs."

"Employees who threatened lawsuits."

"And family members whose behavior needed to be explained away."

Daniel stared.

"You mean discredited."

Samuel nodded.

Elise sat slowly.

Daniel remembered being nineteen and hearing his father call an aunt unstable after she challenged him over company money.

She disappeared from family gatherings soon after.

He had never questioned it.

Samuel handed him a handwritten statement from Rebecca.

She described headaches, memory gaps, and sudden exhaustion.

She described Evelyn repeatedly telling Daniel that Rebecca seemed overwhelmed.

Daniel remembered those conversations.

His mother had always sounded concerned.

He had always agreed.

The shame was immediate.

"I helped her."

Elise leaned forward.

"You did not know."

"I still helped."

Samuel spoke gently.

"Rebecca knew you were being manipulated too."

Daniel looked at the papers.

"Why protect my father's secrets after he died?"

Samuel's expression darkened.

"Because some of the people receiving payments still work for Carter Holdings."

Daniel understood.

Scandal.

Lawsuits.

Board removals.

The family company could fracture.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Cole.

DO NOT GO TO THE OFFICE TODAY.

Daniel called him.

No answer.

Another message appeared.

MOM IS THERE.

Then a third.

SHE IS MEETING THE BOARD.

Daniel stood.

"What is she doing?"

Samuel's phone rang at the same time.

He answered.

His face changed.

"Daniel, Carter Holdings just issued an emergency notice."

"What notice?"

Samuel turned his screen around.

The statement was already public.

Daniel Carter would temporarily step away from executive duties due to a private family health matter.

Daniel read it twice.

"I did not authorize this."

"No."

The next paragraph was worse.

Evelyn Carter had been appointed interim executive chair.

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"She is using this."

Samuel nodded.

"She is framing last night as evidence you are unstable."

Elise stood.

"Exactly like Rebecca said."

Daniel looked toward the nursery.

For months, he had believed control meant keeping every danger outside his home.

Now danger was sitting in his boardroom wearing his last name.

He reached for his coat.

Elise stepped into his path.

"Do not go angry."

Daniel stared at her.

"What would you suggest?"

"Go prepared."

She picked up the yellow gloves from the side table.

Daniel frowned.

Elise placed them in his hands.

"Last night you thought these meant I was careless."

He looked down at them.

"They meant I knew what your daughters needed."

She held his gaze.

"Stop letting your mother tell everyone what your behavior means."

Daniel slowly closed his hand around the gloves.

Samuel gathered the documents.

"Rebecca also left voting proxies."

Daniel looked at him.

"How many?"

Samuel gave the first hint of a smile.

"Enough to make your mother very uncomfortable."

Daniel's phone buzzed again.

This time the message came from Evelyn.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP CUSTODY OF YOUR GIRLS.

Daniel stared at the screen.

May you like

Then he looked at Elise.

The war had finally moved out of the nursery.
