Chapter 8: The Woman in the Red Coat

The hidden office fell silent.
Detective Marcus Hale continued staring at the single sheet of paper.
You're looking in the wrong direction.
—Aster
No one spoke for several seconds.
Finally, Noah Brooks broke the silence.
"That message wasn't printed during the system wipe."
Hale looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Noah pointed to the printer.
"It was scheduled."
"You can tell?"
He nodded.
"The print command was programmed long before we entered the room."
Dana crossed her arms.
"So Aster expected someone to find this office."
"Exactly."
Hale slipped the paper into an evidence bag.
"And expected us to leave with more questions than answers."
The forensic team spent the next three hours collecting every item inside the hidden office.
Hard drives.
Fingerprint samples.
Coffee cups.
Pens.
Notebooks.
Even dust from the air vents.
Yet the room felt strangely empty.
Almost too clean.
Charles Bennett walked slowly around the office.
"This wasn't abandoned."
Hale looked over.
"What do you see?"
Charles pointed to the bookshelves.
"The legal books are arranged alphabetically."
"So?"
"So is everything else."
He opened a filing cabinet.
Every folder was perfectly aligned.
"Someone with this level of organization doesn't leave in a panic."
He turned toward Hale.
"They left exactly when they intended to."
Meanwhile...
Across the city, Evelyn and Lila sat inside the Mercer estate library.
Neither had spoken much during the drive home.
Finally, Evelyn broke the silence.
"I keep asking myself the same question."
Lila looked up.
"What question?"
"How long?"
"How long what?"
"How long was Adrian lying to me?"
Lila didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked to the fireplace and picked up an old framed photograph.
It showed the two sisters as children with their parents outside the original Mercer Hotel.
"You remember this day?"
Evelyn smiled faintly.
"Dad said hotels weren't buildings."
"They were promises."
Lila nodded.
"He believed trust was worth more than money."
She looked directly at Evelyn.
"That's why Adrian chose us."
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"He didn't just steal from the company."
"He stole our family's name."
Back at headquarters...
Noah continued recovering fragments from the erased computer.
Most files had been permanently destroyed.
But one small image remained hidden inside temporary memory.
"No way..."
He enlarged it.
The photograph was grainy.
Taken by a security camera.
A woman wearing a long red coat stepped into an underground parking garage.
Her face remained hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.
The timestamp read:
9:42 PM
Exactly eighteen minutes before the ballroom surveillance video began.
Noah immediately called Hale.
"I found someone."
Thirty minutes later...
The investigation team gathered around the monitor.
"That's all we have?" Dana asked.
"I'm afraid so."
The woman carried no purse.
No visible jewelry.
Black gloves covered her hands.
She walked confidently toward a black sedan parked in the corner.
Before entering the vehicle...
She looked directly toward the security camera.
Almost as if she knew it was there.
Then she smiled.
Not warmly.
Not nervously.
Confidently.
Almost...
Mockingly.
Hale paused the image.
"Can we enhance it?"
Noah tried.
The software sharpened the frame.
The smile became clearer.
But her face remained hidden beneath the hat.
Lila shivered.
"She wanted us to see her."
Charles nodded.
"It wasn't a mistake."
"It was a message."
An officer hurried into the room.
"Detective."
"What is it?"
"We identified the vehicle."
Hale turned quickly.
"Owner?"
The officer handed him a report.
"The license plates were stolen."
Hale wasn't surprised.
"What about the car?"
"It belonged to a luxury rental company."
"Who rented it?"
The officer hesitated.
"A woman."
"Name?"
The officer slowly read the file.
"Claire Donovan."
Dana immediately typed the name into the police database.
Nothing.
"No driver's license."
"No passport."
"No tax records."
"No employment history."
Charles sighed.
"Another fake identity."
Just then, Hale's phone rang.
It was the county jail.
"Detective."
"What now?"
"It's Adrian."
Hale's expression hardened.
"What about him?"
"He says he'll cooperate."
The room became quiet.
"What changed?"
The correctional officer answered,
"He watched the news."
"So?"
"He saw the image of the woman in the red coat."
Hale frowned.
"And?"
The officer lowered his voice.
"When he saw her..."
"He started shaking."
One hour later...
Hale entered the secure interview room.
Adrian sat alone.
His bandaged arm rested on the metal table.
Dark circles surrounded his eyes.
He looked nothing like the polished executive who had stood in the ballroom the night before.
Hale placed the enhanced photograph in front of him.
Adrian stared at it.
Within seconds...
His face turned pale.
"You know her," Hale said.
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I never knew her real name."
"But you've seen her before."
He nodded slowly.
"Many times."
"Who is she?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then whispered,
"She's the one who recruited me."
Silence filled the room.
Hale leaned forward.
"When?"
"Almost four years ago."
"Where?"
"A business conference in Chicago."
"What did she call herself?"
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
His voice barely escaped his lips.
"She introduced herself as Claire."
Hale's heartbeat quickened.
"The same name used to rent the car."
Adrian nodded.
"But it wasn't real."
"What was her real name?"
"I don't know."
"What did everyone call her?"
Adrian looked directly into the detective's eyes.
Only one word left his mouth.
"Aster."
The detective wrote the answer in his notebook.
Then he asked the question that had haunted the investigation from the beginning.
"What does Aster actually want?"
Adrian stared at the table for a long time.
When he finally answered, his voice was filled with regret.
"Not money."
Hale frowned.
"Then what?"
Adrian slowly looked up.
"Revenge."
Outside the interview room, Detective Hale stood frozen for a moment.
If Adrian was telling the truth...
This had never been about a business merger.
Project Horizon had been built for one purpose.

Someone had spent years planning to destroy the Mercer family from the inside.
And they were only beginning to understand why.
