Chapter 2: Secrets Inside the Flash Drive

The ballroom remained frozen in stunned silence long after Evelyn placed the engagement ring on the table.

No one seemed willing to breathe too loudly.

The string quartet quietly lowered their instruments. Waiters stood motionless beside silver serving carts. Photographers who had spent the evening capturing smiling faces now pointed their cameras toward a very different story.

Detective Marcus Hale carefully sealed the evidence bag containing Lila's flash drive.

"Officer Ramirez," he said, "take this directly to Digital Forensics. I don't want it leaving police custody."

The young officer nodded.

"Yes, Detective."

Adrian took a quick step forward.

"You can't seriously believe anything on that drive."

Hale looked at him calmly.

"I don't believe or disbelieve evidence, Mr. Cole."

He handed the evidence bag to Officer Ramirez.

"I verify it."

The officer disappeared through the ballroom doors.

For the first time that evening, genuine panic flickered across Adrian's face.

He pulled out his phone and quickly typed a message.

Dana Price noticed immediately.

"Detective."

Hale glanced over.

"What is it?"

"He just sent a text."

Adrian looked up sharply.

"So?"

Dana's expression remained professional.

"Considering we're investigating possible destruction of evidence, that timing matters."

"You don't have the right to monitor my phone."

"No," Hale agreed. "But if evidence disappears after this moment, the court will certainly be interested in your activity."

Adrian slowly slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Across the room, Evelyn guided Lila into a chair.

Hotel staff quietly brought water and a first-aid kit.

A nurse who had been attending the gala as a guest introduced herself.

"I'm Karen Mitchell," she said gently. "May I examine your head?"

Lila nodded.

Karen carefully brushed Lila's hair aside.

The bruise had darkened significantly.

"You'll need imaging tonight," Karen said. "This could be a concussion."

"I'm okay."

"No," Evelyn replied softly. "You're not."

For several moments, the sisters simply looked at one another.

"I should've told you sooner," Lila whispered.

"Told me what?"

Lila lowered her eyes.

"I discovered everything nearly three months ago."

Evelyn frowned.

"Everything?"

"The fake invoices."

"The hidden companies."

"The money."

She swallowed hard.

"And what Adrian was planning."

Across the ballroom, several investors were quietly leaving.

Others remained, listening without pretending not to.

Richard Lawson, chairman of First National Capital, approached Detective Hale.

"Our bank has over two hundred million dollars committed to Mr. Cole's redevelopment project."

Hale nodded.

"I understand."

"If these allegations involve financial fraud..."

"They're still allegations."

"For now," Richard finished.

He walked away, immediately making a phone call.

Within minutes, three more investors followed.

Adrian watched them leave.

His breathing became noticeably heavier.

He crossed the ballroom toward Evelyn.

"We need to talk."

She didn't stand.

"We are talking."

"Privately."

"No."

"This isn't the place."

"It became the place when you shoved my sister."

His face hardened.

"You still don't understand."

"Then explain."

He looked around the ballroom before lowering his voice.

"The merger can't survive this."

Evelyn stared at him.

"Is that your biggest concern?"

"Our companies employ thousands of people."

"So do mine."

"If investors panic—"

She interrupted him.

"You just watched my sister nearly collapse."

"And you're worried about stock prices."

For a moment, Adrian had no answer.

Detective Hale quietly observed the exchange.

Years of experience had taught him something important.

When people were truly innocent, they usually focused on proving what happened.

When they were guilty, they focused on controlling what happened next.

His phone vibrated.

He stepped aside and answered.

"Hale."

After listening for nearly thirty seconds, his expression changed.

"When?"

Another pause.

"I understand."

He ended the call.

Dana immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

"The forensic lab performed a rapid preview."

"Already?"

"The drive wasn't encrypted."

Dana folded her arms.

"What did they find?"

Hale looked toward Adrian before answering.

"More than twelve hundred files."

Evelyn slowly stood.

"What kind of files?"

"Financial statements."

"Emails."

"Property contracts."

"Bank transfers."

"And video recordings."

Adrian's face went completely pale.

"That's impossible."

Hale continued.

"There are also documents connecting four shell corporations to the same parent account."

Lila nodded quietly.

"I told you."

Adrian suddenly laughed.

The sound startled everyone.

"She's framing me."

"No," Hale replied.

"The interesting part..."

He paused.

"...is that every document appears to have originated from your executive account."

Silence returned.

Adrian looked around the ballroom as though searching for someone who would defend him.

No one spoke.

Not the investors.

Not his attorneys.

Not his business partners.

Not even the board members standing near the stage.

One by one, they lowered their eyes.

Evelyn stepped closer.

"I have one question."

Adrian looked at her.

"Did you ever love me?"

His expression softened for just a second.

"I still do."

She held his gaze.

"Then why was my family listed as collateral?"

He froze.

Lila quietly reached into her purse again.

This time she removed a folded document.

"I wasn't going to show this tonight."

She handed it to Evelyn.

"What is it?"

"A draft agreement."

Evelyn unfolded the pages.

At the top, in bold print, were the words:

MERCER HOSPITALITY ACQUISITION STRATEGY

She scanned the first page.

Then the second.

By the third page, her hands began to tremble.

The proposal outlined a plan to gain controlling interest in Mercer Hotels if the merger closed.

It included asset transfers, board restructuring, and clauses that would gradually remove Evelyn's voting authority over the company her grandfather had built.

She looked up slowly.

"You planned to take everything."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in years, the brilliant businessman who always had the perfect answer stood speechless.

Outside, another clap of thunder shook the hotel windows.

Inside the ballroom, Evelyn finally understood something that hurt far more than betrayal.

She had never been Adrian Cole's partner.

She had been his final investment.
