Chapter 7: The Woman Called Aster

The sun had barely risen when Detective Marcus Hale returned to headquarters.
He hadn't slept.
Neither had anyone on the investigative team.
The attempted murder of Adrian Cole had transformed the case overnight. What had begun as an assault investigation was now a conspiracy involving financial fraud, attempted murder, and an unidentified mastermind known only as Aster.
Hale entered the Major Crimes conference room carrying a fresh cup of black coffee.
The investigation board covered nearly an entire wall.
Photographs of Adrian, Lila, Evelyn, shell corporations, property deeds, surveillance stills, and bank records were connected by dozens of red strings.
At the very center remained one unanswered question.
Who was Aster?
Across town, Evelyn had returned to the Mercer estate with Lila.
Neither sister had felt comfortable staying at the hotel after everything that had happened.
The mansion, usually peaceful, felt strangely unfamiliar.
The family staff greeted them quietly, avoiding unnecessary questions after seeing the breaking news reports flashing across every television network.
The headline was impossible to ignore.
REAL ESTATE EXECUTIVE ARRESTED AFTER HOTEL ASSAULT VIDEO EMERGES
Evelyn switched the television off.
"I've had enough reporters for one lifetime."
Lila managed a faint smile.
"They're already outside the front gate."
"I know."
Evelyn walked toward the large living room windows.
Camera crews had gathered across the street.
Satellite trucks lined the curb.
Security guards had doubled their patrols around the property.
The Mercer family had become the biggest story in the country overnight.
Back at headquarters, Hale's phone rang.
It was Noah Brooks from Digital Forensics.
"I think we found something."
"What?"
"Not who Aster is."
Hale sighed.
"But?"
"We found where Aster made one mistake."
"I'm listening."
Noah enlarged an email header on his computer.
"Every message was routed through encrypted overseas servers."
"So?"
"One email wasn't."
Hale immediately straightened.
"Explain."
"It bounced through a local relay before being redirected."
"Can you trace it?"
"I already did."
He turned his monitor toward the detective.
The location appeared on the screen.
Mercer Grand Hotel Executive Offices
Hale frowned.
"That's impossible."
"It surprised me too."
"Aster sent an email from inside Evelyn's hotel?"
"Yes."
"And no one noticed."
Two hours later...
Dana Price unlocked the executive offices before business hours.
The hotel remained partially closed while investigators continued collecting evidence.
Hale, Noah, Dana, and two forensic technicians entered Adrian's former office.
Everything looked untouched.
The polished walnut desk.
The leather chairs.
The framed awards.
The city skyline beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Noah connected a portable scanner to the office network.
"It originated somewhere in this room."
Dana looked around.
"There's nothing here except Adrian's workstation."
The scanner beeped.
"No..."
Noah slowly followed the signal toward the bookshelf behind Adrian's desk.
"Over here."
He examined the shelves carefully.
Every book appeared genuine.
Until one refused to move.
"Detective."
Hale stepped beside him.
Noah pressed firmly against the edge of the shelf.
A soft mechanical click echoed through the office.
Dana's eyes widened.
The entire bookshelf slowly swung outward.
Behind it...
A hidden room.
The concealed office was surprisingly large.
Three computer monitors covered one wall.
A separate communications console sat beneath them.
Several locked filing cabinets lined the back wall.
Everything had been abandoned in a hurry.
One coffee mug still sat half full on the desk.
Dana looked stunned.
"I've worked here for eight years."
"I never knew this room existed."
Neither had anyone else.
Hale carefully entered.
"Photograph everything."
The forensic team immediately began documenting the scene.
Noah powered on the central computer.
A login screen appeared.
User: ASTER
Everyone froze.
"There it is," Hale whispered.
Noah attempted several passwords.
Nothing.
Then Dana noticed something unusual.
"The keyboard."
"What about it?"
"The A, S, T, E, and R keys are almost completely unworn."
"So?"
"The space bar is heavily worn."
Noah smiled.
"Whoever worked here used a password manager."
He removed a small encrypted hardware key plugged into the side of the computer.
"This might bypass the login."
After several tense moments...
The desktop opened.
Every monitor immediately filled with project folders.
Project Horizon
Acquisition Timeline
Political Contacts
Media Strategy
Witness Monitoring
Lila, who had arrived with Evelyn moments earlier, covered her mouth.
"My God..."
Evelyn stared silently.
One folder caught Hale's attention.
Mercer Family Profiles
He opened it.
Individual files appeared.
Evelyn Mercer
Lila Mercer
Margaret Mercer
Daniel Mercer (Deceased)
Even Evelyn's late father had been included.
Each profile contained photographs...
Financial histories...
Medical information...
Travel schedules...
Personal relationships...
Years of surveillance.
Evelyn felt sick.
"He watched my entire family."
"No," Hale corrected quietly.
"Someone watched your family."
Noah opened another folder.
This one contained security footage.
Not from the hotel.
From the Mercer estate.
Another video showed Evelyn entering a charity gala months earlier.
Another captured Lila leaving her apartment.
Dana frowned.
"Those cameras aren't public."
"No," Hale agreed.
"They were installed deliberately."
Charles Bennett, who had joined the search, looked horrified.
"This goes far beyond corporate espionage."
"It does."
Hale carefully removed one final folder from the desktop.
Its title was simple.
Identity
He clicked.
The folder contained only one document.
A single sentence appeared across the screen.
If you are reading this, I am already gone.
Before anyone could react...
Every monitor suddenly went black.
Noah shouted.
"It's wiping itself!"
He desperately typed commands.
Files disappeared one after another.
Project Horizon...
Gone.
Financial records...
Gone.
Communications...
Gone.
Within thirty seconds, the entire system had erased itself.
The room fell silent.
Noah leaned back in frustration.
"I couldn't stop it."
Hale stared at the blank monitors.
Then he noticed something.
One printer beside the desk had activated before the system shut down.
A single sheet of paper slowly slid into the output tray.
He picked it up.
Only one sentence had been printed.
You're looking in the wrong direction.
At the bottom of the page...
For the first time...
There was a signature.
— Aster
Detective Hale looked at Evelyn.
Then at the hidden office surrounding them.
Someone had been inside this room only hours earlier.
May you like
And somehow...
Aster already knew exactly how close they had come.
