Chapter 5: The Hidden Partner

Detective Marcus Hale's phone vibrated before he had even left the ballroom.

He answered immediately.

"Hale."

The forensic examiner spoke without wasting a second.

"Detective, we've finished decrypting the final folder from the flash drive."

"What did you find?"

"It wasn't just financial data."

Hale glanced toward Evelyn and Charles Bennett before walking a few steps away.

"What was it?"

"A private archive."

"What kind of archive?"

"Emails... contracts... voice messages... and a partnership agreement."

Hale stopped walking.

"A partnership with whom?"

The examiner hesitated.

"That's the problem."

"There isn't a name."

"What do you mean?"

"The partner is only identified as 'Aster.' Every document refers to the person by that code name."

Hale frowned.

"I'll be there in ten minutes."

He ended the call and returned to the group.

Charles immediately noticed the detective's expression.

"More bad news?"

"More questions."

Evelyn looked up.

"What happened?"

"The flash drive contained evidence of another person."

Lila's face tightened.

"I knew Adrian wasn't working alone."

"You suspected someone?"

She nodded.

"I just never figured out who."

Charles folded his arms.

"No one builds a network of shell companies by themselves."

Hale agreed.

"Exactly."

An hour later...

The city's Digital Forensics Unit buzzed with activity.

Computer monitors lined the walls, each displaying spreadsheets, banking records, surveillance footage, or lines of encrypted code.

Detective Hale led Evelyn, Lila, Charles, and Dana into the secure analysis room.

A young forensic analyst named Noah Brooks stood beside a large monitor.

"Thanks for coming."

He connected the recovered flash drive to an isolated workstation.

The screen filled with folders.

"There were over twelve hundred files."

He clicked one labeled Private Communications.

"Most were routine business emails."

Another click.

"But this folder was hidden beneath multiple layers of encryption."

He opened the first document.

Across the top appeared the title:

Project Horizon

Beneath it was a sentence that immediately caught Evelyn's attention.

Objective: Secure operational control of Mercer Hospitality before Q4.

She slowly sat down.

"So the merger really was planned from the beginning."

Noah nodded.

"It appears that way."

He opened another file.

This one contained dozens of email exchanges.

Every message had been sent between Adrian and someone using the address:

aster.consult@protonmail...

The sender's identity had been concealed.

Charles adjusted his glasses.

"Read one."

Noah opened the most recent message.

Aster:

Evelyn trusts you completely.

Once the marriage is finalized, execute Phase Three immediately.

Delay creates unnecessary risk.

Another email.

Adrian:

Lila has become suspicious.

She copied accounting records.

I'm handling the situation tonight.

The room became deathly quiet.

Lila slowly closed her eyes.

"So he planned everything."

Noah clicked another message.

Aster:

Do not allow emotional attachment to interfere.

The Mercer acquisition is worth more than any relationship.

Evelyn felt a chill run through her body.

She had spent years believing Adrian was building a future with her.

Instead...

Someone had been coaching him like a business negotiation.

Charles looked toward Hale.

"This wasn't one man's scheme."

"No."

"It was organized."

Hale nodded.

"And very expensive."

Dana walked closer to another monitor.

"What about the shell companies?"

Noah typed several commands.

A network diagram appeared.

Five corporations.

Three charitable foundations.

Seven holding companies.

All connected through offshore accounts.

At the very center...

Mercer Hospitality.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"They surrounded my company."

"Exactly," Noah said.

"If one path failed, another would succeed."

Lila quietly asked,

"Can we identify Aster?"

Noah sighed.

"Not yet."

"The emails were routed through multiple foreign servers."

"No names?"

"No photographs."

"No banking records."

"Nothing?"

He shook his head.

"Whoever Aster is..."

"They've done this before."

Detective Hale's own phone suddenly rang again.

He answered.

"Yes?"

His expression changed almost instantly.

"When?"

Another pause.

"Keep him there."

He ended the call.

Dana looked at him.

"What now?"

"Adrian just requested an attorney."

"That's expected."

"He also requested one visitor."

Charles frowned.

"Who?"

Hale looked around the room.

"Evelyn."

Everyone fell silent.

Lila immediately shook her head.

"Absolutely not."

Charles agreed.

"She doesn't owe him anything."

Hale spoke carefully.

"I already told him she isn't obligated."

Evelyn remained quiet.

After nearly a minute, she finally asked,

"What did he say?"

Hale answered honestly.

"He claims there's something only you need to hear."

Lila grabbed her sister's hand.

"Don't go."

Charles nodded.

"Whatever he has to say can wait until court."

Evelyn stared at the floor.

Her heart still carried pieces of the man she had believed Adrian was.

But her mind remembered the recording.

I don't love Evelyn.

I love what her last name can do.

Those words echoed louder than anything else.

She slowly stood.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"If Adrian has something important to say..."

She met Detective Hale's eyes.

"...he can say it in front of his lawyer."

She turned toward the door.

"I'm done having private conversations with people who lie."

Detective Hale gave a small nod.

"I'll let him know."

As he stepped into the hallway, his phone buzzed once more.

This time, the call came from the county jail.

Hale answered immediately.

The correctional officer on the other end sounded shaken.

"Detective..."

"What happened?"

"You'd better get here."

"Why?"

There was a brief silence.

Then the officer replied,

"Someone just tried to kill Adrian Cole."
