Chapter 3: The Aftershock

By morning, the company was in chaos.

Emails. Calls. Rumors spreading faster than official statements could control.

“The executive was fired.”

“No warning.”

“The chairman intervened лично.”

But one detail spread the fastest:

“The employee in the white shirt.”

Lena avoided the office cafeteria. Avoided eye contact. Avoided everything.

Until HR called her in.

She expected paperwork. Maybe termination. Maybe silence.

Instead, they handed her a new contract.

Senior Internal Compliance Officer.

She stared at it, unblinking.

“This has to be a mistake,” she whispered.

The HR director shook his head. “It isn’t.”

That afternoon, the chairman passed her in the hallway.

He stopped.

“So,” he said calmly, “are you going to keep your head down?”

Lena hesitated.

Then, for the first time, she lifted her eyes fully.

“No,” she said.

A faint pause.

Then he nodded once.

“Good. Because now they’ll be watching you too.”

He walked away.

And Lena understood something she hadn’t before.

The fall of one executive wasn’t the end of the story.

It was the beginning of hers.
