Chapter 1: The Weight of Silence

No one in the room exhaled.

The executive stood frozen, her mouth slightly open as if the word fired hadn’t fully reached her yet. Her eyes darted around the table, searching for support, for authority, for anything that might undo what had just happened.

There was nothing.

The chairman didn’t raise his voice again. He didn’t need to.

“Security will escort you out,” he said flatly.

Two guards appeared at the doorway almost instantly, as if they had been waiting for that exact moment. The executive finally moved, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she tried to recover whatever dignity she had left.

“This is a mistake,” she snapped. “You can’t just—”

But the chairman had already turned away from her.

His attention shifted to the young employee.

The room held its breath again.

She stood there drenched in coffee, trembling, trying to wipe her sleeve with shaking fingers. Her eyes stayed fixed on the floor, as if looking up might make the humiliation worse.

The chairman took one step closer.

“What’s your name?” he asked gently.

She hesitated. “Lena…”

He nodded once, as if committing it to memory.

“Lena, you’re coming with me.”

A murmur rippled through the room. No one understood what that meant. Not yet.

But the executive, now being escorted out, suddenly stopped struggling.

May you like

Because she understood.

And that realization hit her harder than the firing itself.
