Chapter 5: Justice Arrives

Two weeks later, the courtroom looked very different.

Daniel no longer appeared confident.

The state had opened an investigation into possible fraud, attempted financial exploitation of minors, and false statements made during custody proceedings.

His attorney had withdrawn.

The judge reviewed the evidence one final time.

Then she looked toward Lucas.

"You were incredibly brave."

Lucas simply nodded.

The judge turned to Daniel.

"Children are not financial assets."

She paused.

"They are not bargaining chips."

Finally she read her decision.

"Sole legal and physical custody of Lucas and Mason Carter is awarded to their mother, Emily Carter."

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The judge continued.

"Mr. Carter shall receive only professionally supervised visitation until further order of this court."

A tear rolled down Mason's cheek.

Lucas quietly reached for my hand.

For the first time in over a year...

Neither boy looked afraid.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
