Chapter 3: A Grandfather's Final Protection

Chapter 3: A Grandfather's Final Protection
The court recessed for an hour.
During the break, an elderly man hurried into the courthouse carrying a weathered leather briefcase.
He introduced himself as Harold Bennett.
"I am the trustee of Richard Bennett's estate."
Richard Bennett.
My father.
Harold handed sealed documents to the judge.
"I've waited nine years to deliver these if custody was ever challenged."
Inside was my father's handwritten letter.
The judge read portions aloud.
If anyone seeks custody of my grandsons for financial gain, this letter authorizes the trustee to reveal the existence of their trust. Under no circumstance may any guardian who attempts to exploit these funds control their administration.
There were additional instructions.
Neither parent could access a single dollar.
Every expense required trustee approval.
The money belonged only to Lucas and Mason.
Daniel's face turned gray.
His entire strategy had depended on controlling assets he would never legally touch.
Then Harold produced something else.
A folder of emails.
Printed.
Signed.
Verified.
Daniel had repeatedly asked whether there was "any legal pathway to gain management authority over the twins' inheritance."
Every email had been denied.

The judge closed the folder slowly.
"This custody hearing," she said quietly, "has become something entirely different."
