Chapter 2: The Voice That Changed Everything

Chapter 2: The Voice That Changed Everything

The recording continued.

Daniel laughed.

It was a sound I hadn't heard in years—not because it was rare, but because he never let anyone outside our home hear it. It was the laugh he used whenever he believed he had already won.

"Once I have primary custody, Emily has no leverage. Her father thought he was protecting those boys, but he handed me the solution."

Another man's voice answered.

It was Daniel's longtime financial adviser, Victor Reynolds.

"What if she finds out about the trust?"

Daniel scoffed.

"She won't. Her father never trusted lawyers. He hid everything through a private trustee. Emily thinks her dad left almost nothing because of the medical bills. She has no idea there's over four million dollars waiting for the twins when they turn twenty-five."

A ripple spread through the courtroom.

I felt every muscle in my body freeze.

Four million dollars?

My father...

He had told me shortly before he died, "One day you'll understand why I arranged things this way."

I had assumed he meant sentimental keepsakes.

Instead, he'd been protecting my children.

The recording continued.

"As long as I control the boys, I control every decision involving that trust. Emily won't have enough money to fight me."

Victor hesitated.

"And if Lucas tells someone?"

Daniel chuckled.

"He's nine. Kids forget."

Lucas lowered his eyes.

"I didn't forget."

Silence swallowed the courtroom.

The judge ordered the recording stopped.

Daniel's attorney looked completely stunned.

"Your Honor," she whispered, "my client never informed me of any trust."

"I can see that."

The judge stared directly at Daniel.

"Mr. Carter... is there anything else this court should know?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.
