Chapter 4: The Truth Behind Lucas's Recorder

Chapter 4: The Truth Behind Lucas's Recorder

That evening, after court adjourned, Lucas finally told me everything.

We sat together on the living room floor.

Mason had already fallen asleep beside us.

Lucas held the recorder tightly.

"Grandpa gave it to me."

I blinked.

"What?"

"The summer before he got sick."

He smiled sadly.

"He said, 'Sometimes grown-ups forget children are listening. If anyone ever makes you feel scared, don't argue. Just remember.'"

My father...

He had known Daniel better than I ever did.

Lucas explained that three months earlier he had accidentally overheard Daniel speaking in his home office.

Daniel never noticed the recorder sitting inside Lucas's backpack.

Lucas listened later.

When he realized what he'd captured, he hid it beneath the loose board under his bedroom dresser.

He wanted to tell me.

But Daniel kept warning the boys.

"If your mother gets emotional again, the judge will think she's unstable."

Lucas had stayed silent to protect me.

No child should ever carry that burden.

I wrapped both boys in my arms.

"I'm so sorry," I whispered.

Lucas shook his head.

"I wasn't protecting myself."

He looked at me with tears filling his eyes.

"I was protecting our family."
