CHAPTER 4: THE MAN IN THE HALLWAY

Heavy footsteps rushed in.

Chaos erupted outside the room.

“Security breach!” someone shouted.

The doctor stepped back quickly. “What is going on?”

Linda’s voice changed for the first time—less calm, more furious. “Who authorized you to be here?”

The answer came instantly.

“I did.”

Silence.

Then a pause.

And then I heard it clearly.

My father’s voice.

My breath broke.

Emily whispered, “I told Grandpa.”

The bed shifted as someone knelt beside it.

“Come out slowly,” my father said gently. “It’s over.”

I crawled out, clutching my baby.

The doctor was already being restrained outside the room.

Linda stood frozen, her expression unreadable for the first time in her life.

“You had no right,” she said quietly.
