CHAPTER 1: UNDER THE BED
I pressed myself into the cold space beneath the hospital bed, my newborn still in the bassinet beside me.
My heart was hammering so hard I thought it might give us away.
The door creaked open.
Footsteps entered slowly… confidently.
“Doctor… she should be ready now,” my mother-in-law, Linda, said in a calm, almost satisfied tone.
A man replied, “The consent forms are already signed. We can proceed with the transfer.”
Transfer?
My stomach twisted.
I hadn’t signed anything.
Then I heard paper rustling… and the sound of a pen tapping against a clipboard.
Emily’s hand found mine under the bed—small, trembling, but firm.
