CHAPTER 1: UNDER THE BED

CHAPTER 1: UNDER THE BED

I pressed myself into the cold space beneath the hospital bed, my newborn still in the bassinet beside me.

My heart was hammering so hard I thought it might give us away.

The door creaked open.

Footsteps entered slowly… confidently.

“Doctor… she should be ready now,” my mother-in-law, Linda, said in a calm, almost satisfied tone.

A man replied, “The consent forms are already signed. We can proceed with the transfer.”

Transfer?

My stomach twisted.

I hadn’t signed anything.

Then I heard paper rustling… and the sound of a pen tapping against a clipboard.

Emily’s hand found mine under the bed—small, trembling, but firm.

“Stay quiet, Mom,” she whispered.

I had never been more afraid in my life.
