Chapter 9 - Caroline Reed

Marissa wanted law enforcement involved.

Detective Harper wanted Caroline to come to them.

Caroline refused both options.

Her next message was blunt.

I TALK TO CLAIRE FIRST.

Claire read it aloud in the living room.

Ethan immediately said no.

Claire looked at him.

"You don't get to veto me."

"You're thirty-four weeks pregnant and recovering from a fall."

"That gives you the right to worry."

"I am exercising that right aggressively."

"I noticed."

Lucas sat between them on the edge of an armchair.

"For the record, I also vote no."

Claire stared at him.

"Nobody gave you a vote."

"Security people vote by standing near doors."

Marissa rubbed her forehead.

"Can everyone stop treating this like a family election?"

Dana, sitting beside Lily on the sofa, looked at Claire.

"Why does she only want you?"

Claire had been wondering the same thing.

She typed the question.

Caroline responded less than a minute later.

BECAUSE ETHAN IS A BENNETT.

The room went quiet.

Ethan read the message over Claire's shoulder.

"Fair."

Claire looked at him.

"That didn't bother you?"

"It did."

"You sound calm."

"I'm trying something new."

Marissa suggested a compromise.

Claire could meet Caroline in a public place.

Lucas would accompany her but remain out of earshot.

Detective Harper would know the location and have officers nearby.

Ethan could come but would stay in another part of the building unless Caroline agreed to speak with him.

Caroline accepted.

The location was a small roadside diner off an interstate exit.

The kind of place with vinyl booths, bottomless coffee, and a pie display older than half the furniture.

They drove there the next morning.

Claire watched fields and warehouse roofs pass outside the SUV window.

Ethan sat beside her, unusually quiet.

"What are you thinking?"

She asked.

"That my father fired someone seven years ago for finding exactly what you're finding now."

"We don't know that yet."

He gave her a sideways look.

"You're stealing my line."

"Somebody has to."

He looked back out the window.

"If Caroline is telling the truth, I worked in that building for years while this was happening."

Claire took his hand.

"Knowing the truth later doesn't make you responsible for not knowing it earlier."

"Maybe not."

"No maybe."

"You're very bossy for someone who nearly threatened me over a storage unit."

"Pregnancy has broadened my leadership style."

That earned a quiet laugh.

They reached the diner shortly after eleven.

Detective Harper's unmarked vehicle was already parked across the road.

Lucas entered first.

Then Claire.

Ethan waited near the front counter as agreed.

Caroline sat in the last booth by the window.

She was fifty-two, with silver threaded through dark brown hair cut just above her shoulders.

A red wool coat hung beside her.

She looked ordinary.

Claire had expected someone more dramatic after years of secrecy.

Then Caroline looked up.

Her eyes were not ordinary.

They were the eyes of someone who had spent a long time checking exits.

"Claire Bennett?"

"Yes."

"Sit down."

Claire slid into the booth.

Lucas chose a stool at the counter where he could see them.

Caroline looked at Claire's stomach.

"Are you all right?"

"The baby is doing well."

"Good."

Caroline's gaze moved toward Ethan.

"He came."

"He stayed away from the table."

"For now."

Claire studied her.

"Why did you contact me?"

Caroline wrapped both hands around a coffee mug.

"Because I watched Walter Bennett teach three generations of that family to doubt anyone who challenged him."

"Including you."

"Especially me."

Claire waited.

Caroline looked out the window.

"In 2019, Bennett Development was not in financial danger."

That contradicted Walter's explanation immediately.

"Walter said North Vale was created to save distressed properties."

"Walter says whatever makes the next five minutes easier."

Caroline took a sip of coffee.

"The company had strong cash flow, manageable debt, and several properties that had appreciated dramatically."

"Then why create North Vale?"

"To take value out of Bennett Development without distributing it to all shareholders."

Claire felt the answer land.

"How?"

Caroline reached into a tote bag.

She did not remove anything yet.

"Walter and Peter identified parcels the company owned outright or nearly outright."

"Then?"

"They had appraisals prepared using conservative assumptions."

"Low appraisals."

"Very low."

"And North Vale bought the properties?"

"At those values."

"Then resold them?"

"Sometimes."

Caroline nodded.

"Sometimes North Vale refinanced them at the real market value and took cash out."

Claire thought about the list of thirty-two transfers.

"So the company lost the upside."

"The minority shareholders did."

"Who owned North Vale?"

"Shells owned shells."

Caroline gave a tired smile.

"Walter liked layers."

"Where does Ryan fit?"

"He didn't at first."

"When did he join?"

"2021."

"Why?"

Caroline's expression hardened.

"Because Ryan wanted money faster than Walter was willing to move it."

Claire glanced toward Ethan.

He was pretending to study a menu near the counter.

"How do you know what happened after you left?"

Caroline looked at her.

"Because I didn't completely leave."

Claire waited.

"Someone inside kept sending me records."

"Who?"

"I'm not telling you yet."

"Why?"

"Because that person still works there."

Claire's mind immediately went to the CFO.

Martin Blake.

Then to dozens of accountants, administrators, and project managers she barely knew.

"Did you send the anonymous transfer list?"

"Yes."

"Why not contact us directly?"

"I contacted Ethan once."

Claire blinked.

"When?"

"2019."

"How?"

"Email."

"What happened?"

Caroline looked toward Ethan.

"Walter answered."

Claire's skin prickled.

"From Ethan's account?"

"Yes."

"What did it say?"

"That Ethan supported my termination and would pursue legal action if I contacted the family again."

Claire stared at her.

"Ethan never knew?"

"I assumed he did."

Claire looked toward her husband.

The theft of his credentials had not started this week.

Walter had been speaking in Ethan's digital voice for years.

"What copy did you keep?"

Caroline finally reached into her bag.

She removed a small notebook wrapped in a clear plastic sleeve.

It was not thick.

Maybe eighty pages.

The cover was dark blue.

"The ledger."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"The actual ledger?"

"A copy I made before Walter knew I had found it."

"Why keep a handwritten ledger at all?"

"Because Peter didn't trust digital records."

Caroline almost smiled.

"Criminals can be old-fashioned."

Claire looked at the notebook.

"What does it show?"

"Payments. Property transfers. Ownership percentages."

"Names?"

"Initials."

"W.B., R.B., P.B.?"

"Those three."

"Anyone else?"

Caroline's eyes held hers.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"E.B."

Claire stopped breathing.

Ethan Bennett.

She looked toward her husband.

Caroline watched her reaction.

"That's why I wouldn't meet him first."

Claire's hand tightened around the edge of the table.

"Are you saying Ethan was part of it?"

"I'm saying his initials appear in the ledger."

"For what?"

"Four transactions."

"When?"

Caroline opened the notebook to marked pages.

2019.

2020.

2021.

2023.

Claire read the entries.

E.B. APPROVED.

E.B. ACCESS.

E.B. SIGNED.

Her stomach turned.

"He didn't know about North Vale."

Caroline's expression remained neutral.

"Maybe."

Claire hated hearing the word from someone else.

"What do the underlying documents show?"

"That's the important question."

"Do you have them?"

"Some."

"Where?"

Caroline glanced outside.

"Not here."

"Safe-deposit box?"

Caroline's eyes sharpened.

"You found the key."

"Police did."

"Then Walter left it behind on purpose."

Claire frowned.

"Why?"

"Because that key doesn't open my box."

"Whose does it open?"

Caroline leaned back.

"Peter's."

Claire stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because I saw him use it."

"What's in his box?"

"The original ownership certificates for three North Vale entities."

"Why would Walter hide Peter's key in N-17?"

"Insurance."

"Against Peter?"

"Against everyone."

Caroline looked toward Ethan again.

"Walter never trusts partners."

"Not even family."

"Especially family."

Claire looked at the E.B. entries again.

"I need Ethan at this table."

Caroline hesitated.

"You trust him?"

"Yes."

The answer came without effort.

Caroline studied her face.

"Even after seeing his initials?"

"I trust him enough to ask him while looking at him."

Caroline was silent for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

Claire waved Ethan over.

He sat beside her.

"What happened?"

Claire turned the ledger so he could see.

His face changed as soon as he read the first E.B. entry.

"What is this?"

Caroline answered.

"The ledger your father said did not exist."

Ethan looked at her.

"Caroline."

"It's been a long time."

"I never supported firing you."

"I know that now."

"What do you mean?"

"Your father answered an email I sent you."

Ethan's confusion turned to anger.

Claire touched his arm.

"Later."

She pointed at the ledger.

"These entries use your initials."

Ethan read them slowly.

His expression shifted from confusion to recognition.

"Wait."

He tapped the 2020 line.

"I did approve this property sale."

Claire's heart sank.

Then Ethan continued.

"But the buyer wasn't North Vale."

Caroline leaned forward.

"What buyer did you see?"

"Cedar Ridge Restoration."

Everyone at the table went still.

Claire stared at him.

"Cedar Ridge existed in 2020?"

"Yes."

"Walter's attorney claimed he didn't know it."

"Dad knew it."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"He presented it to the investment committee as an independent redevelopment group."

Caroline nodded slowly.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The bridge."

"Between what?"

"Cedar Ridge and North Vale."

Caroline opened the ledger to another page.

A notation appeared beside several property transfers.

CR -> NV AFTER CLOSE.

Ethan read it.

"Cedar Ridge bought the property."

Caroline nodded.

"Then quietly assigned it to North Vale after closing."

Claire understood.

"So Ethan signed a legitimate-looking sale to Cedar Ridge."

"Then someone changed who ultimately owned it."

Caroline nodded.

"Exactly."

Ethan sat back.

"My signatures were used to make the first step look clean."

"And your initials in the ledger make the later step look like you knew."

Claire felt anger rise in her throat.

Walter's plan had been operating for years.

The recent fake transfer was only the latest version.

Caroline closed the ledger.

"This is why I need the documents from my safe location."

Ethan looked at her.

"Where are they?"

Caroline's gaze moved to the parking lot.

"Cedar House."

"What's Cedar House?"

"An old property North Vale never sold."

Claire frowned.

"Why would you hide evidence on property they control?"

Caroline gave a thin smile.

"Because Walter stopped checking places he thought he already owned."

Then her expression changed.

She stared through the window.

A black SUV had pulled into the diner parking lot.

Caroline's face went white.

"We need to leave."

Ethan turned.

"Who is that?"

"I don't know."

"Then why are you scared?"

Caroline grabbed the ledger.

"Because that's the same SUV that followed me yesterday."

Lucas was already moving from the counter.

Detective Harper's car started across the road.

The black SUV rolled slowly past the diner windows.

Its windows were tinted.

Then it accelerated toward the highway without stopping.

Caroline watched it disappear.

"Walter knows I'm talking."

Claire looked at her.

"How?"

May you like

Caroline's answer was almost a whisper.

"Because someone in your investigation is telling him."
