Chapter 11 - The Missing CFO

For four hours, nobody could find Martin Blake.

His car remained in the Bennett Development garage.

His laptop remained open on his desk.

His phone went straight to voicemail.

The building's interior cameras showed him entering his office at 8:07 that morning.

They did not show him leaving.

That was the part Detective Harper disliked most.

"People do not vanish from a twenty-two-story office building."

She said it while standing in Claire and Ethan's living room that afternoon.

"They use stairs, elevators, loading docks, parking exits, or service corridors."

Lucas nodded.

"Unless one of the cameras is missing footage."

Harper looked at him.

"Exactly."

Ethan stood near the fireplace with his arms folded.

"Which camera?"

"Service hallway outside the executive records room."

"Offline?"

"Not offline."

Harper's expression tightened.

"Deleted."

Claire sat on the sofa with a heating pad against her bruised hip.

"Who can delete building security footage?"

Ethan answered before Harper could.

"Corporate security."

"And who controls corporate security?"

"My father ultimately."

Harper raised one finger.

"That is organizational structure, not proof of who deleted anything."

Claire nodded.

"Understood."

She had grown used to the detective's insistence on separating what looked obvious from what could actually be demonstrated.

It frustrated Ethan.

Claire increasingly found it comforting.

Facts were the only stable ground left.

Harper opened a folder.

"We recovered a partial access log from the service elevator."

Ethan looked at her.

"Martin?"

"His employee badge was used at 8:39."

"So he left through the service corridor."

"Maybe."

Claire almost smiled at the detective using Ethan's least favorite word.

Harper continued.

"The same elevator was called to the executive floor seven minutes earlier with Denise Hall's badge."

Ethan's face hardened.

"Walter's assistant."

"Yes."

"The assistant whose workstation was used to access my account."

"Yes."

"The assistant who suddenly went on personal leave."

"Yes."

Ethan spread his hands.

"At what point do I get to stop saying maybe?"

Harper looked at him calmly.

"When we find Denise and ask her."

Claire's phone buzzed.

A message from Megan.

BOARD MEETING MOVED TO 4 PM.

DAD WANTS THE SUSPENSION VOTE TODAY.

Claire showed Ethan.

His face went still.

"Of course he does."

Harper closed her folder.

"Do you have to attend?"

"I'm a director."

"Can counsel attend?"

"Yes."

"Then take counsel."

Ethan nodded.

Harper stood.

"And do not use the board meeting to accuse anyone of crimes."

"Can I accuse them of being terrible relatives?"

Harper almost smiled.

"That's outside my jurisdiction."

After she left, Claire watched Ethan walk upstairs to change.

He had been suspended administratively, but the board still had to ratify the decision.

Walter wanted the vote before the investigation could produce enough evidence to make board members afraid of standing beside him.

Marissa arrived forty minutes later carrying a laptop and three thick binders.

"We have one objective."

She placed the binders on the dining table.

"Prevent the board from treating Walter's version of events as established fact."

Ethan adjusted his cuff.

"Can we stop the suspension?"

"Maybe."

He stared at her.

Marissa raised an eyebrow.

"I heard you hate that word now."

Claire smiled.

"He does."

Marissa opened the first binder.

"Walter and Peter control enough shares to win if Peter votes with him."

"Peter will."

"Probably."

"Another bad word."

"You can be annoyed after the meeting."

She pointed at the second binder.

"The independent directors do not need to believe you're innocent today."

"Comforting."

"They need to understand that suspending you based on compromised credentials while Walter is implicated in related transactions creates risk for the company."

Claire looked at Ethan.

"Make it about governance."

Marissa nodded.

"Exactly."

Ethan hated that too.

Not because it was wrong.

Because his family had become a governance problem.

At three twenty, Lucas drove Ethan and Marissa to headquarters.

Claire stayed home under doctor's orders.

She tried not to resent her own body for setting limits she would have ignored under any other circumstances.

Dana sat with her at the kitchen table.

Lily was upstairs doing schoolwork remotely.

"You wish you were there."

Dana said it without looking up from her coffee.

"Very much."

"You'd hate it."

"Also very much."

Dana smiled faintly.

Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Dana saw the screen.

"Don't answer."

Claire answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then breathing.

Dana straightened.

Claire put the call on speaker.

"Who is this?"

A man's voice came through.

"You happy now?"

Ryan.

Dana went white.

Claire's pulse jumped.

"Ryan."

"You got what you wanted."

His voice sounded tired rather than angry.

That unsettled Claire more.

"What exactly do you think I wanted?"

"Ethan turning on Dad."

"You pushed me down the stairs."

A pause.

"You were threatening me."

"I told you I found a bank transfer."

"You said you'd destroy everything."

"No."

Claire kept her voice controlled.

"I said I would tell Ethan."

Ryan laughed softly.

"Same thing."

Dana gripped the edge of the table.

Claire looked at her, then spoke.

"Where are you?"

"Doesn't matter."

"The police want to speak with you."

"My lawyer is handling that."

"Then why are you calling me?"

Ryan went quiet.

When he answered, the arrogance was gone.

"Tell Ethan to stop digging."

Claire felt the room narrow around the phone.

"Why?"

"Because Dad isn't who Ethan thinks he is."

Dana shook her head slowly, warning Claire not to trust anything.

Claire understood.

She asked anyway.

"And who is Walter?"

Ryan lowered his voice.

"A man who always has another version of the paperwork."

"What does that mean?"

"It means if Ethan keeps pushing, he'll end up looking guilty too."

"Because you used his login?"

Silence.

Claire continued.

"We found your second phone."

Dana's eyes widened.

Claire knew she should not have said it.

She wanted a reaction.

She got one.

Ryan stopped breathing for a second.

Then his voice became hard.

"You don't know what you're looking at."

Walter's phrase.

Exactly.

Claire almost laughed.

"That's what your father keeps saying."

"Claire."

Ryan sounded suddenly urgent.

"Listen to me."

"I'm listening."

"The messages aren't what they look like."

"Did you write them?"

"Some."

"Did Walter tell you to use Ethan's old tablet?"

Ryan did not answer.

"Did you try to move $1.2 million to Cedar Ridge using Ethan's credentials?"

Another silence.

Dana closed her eyes.

Claire continued.

"Did you push me because I found North Vale?"

Ryan's voice came back low.

"I didn't mean for you to fall."

Dana stared at the phone.

Claire felt cold settle over her skin.

It was the first time Ryan had admitted the push.

"You put both hands on my back."

"I wanted you away from me."

"At the top of a staircase."

"I wasn't thinking."

"No."

Claire's voice remained steady.

"You were thinking about stopping me from telling Ethan."

Ryan swore under his breath.

"You think Ethan is safe because he's the good son?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Ask him about the Ridgeview sale."

"What sale?"

"Ask him."

"Ryan."

"And ask him why Dad has his signature on four North Vale files."

Claire looked at Dana.

Caroline had already shown them the initials.

"We know about those."

Ryan went silent again.

"Then you know Ethan signed things."

"He signed Cedar Ridge documents before the ownership changed."

Ryan laughed.

"That's what he told you?"

Claire felt anger flare.

"What are you trying to do?"

"Save myself."

At least that answer sounded true.

Then Ryan said something quieter.

"Dad will sacrifice me if he has to."

Dana looked down.

"Maybe he should have thought about that earlier."

Ryan heard her.

"Dana?"

She did not answer.

"Dana, are you there?"

She leaned toward the phone.

"Do not call me again."

"You took my phone."

"Our daughter did."

"Lily?"

The anger returned immediately.

Dana's face hardened.

"You will not bring her into this."

"She stole from me."

"You used my name on shell companies."

"You signed the forms."

"Because you lied about what they were."

Ryan exhaled sharply.

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

Dana's eyes filled but her voice stayed level.

"I understand that our daughter was more afraid of what you were planning than she was afraid of taking your phone."

Ryan said nothing.

"That's what you've built."

Dana ended the call.

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Claire called Marissa.

The board meeting had started.

Marissa answered in a whisper from the hallway outside the conference room.

Claire told her Ryan had called.

"Did he admit the push?"

"He said he didn't mean for me to fall."

Marissa's tone sharpened.

"Write down the exact words now."

"Okay."

"Did anyone else hear?"

"Dana."

"Good."

"He also told me to ask Ethan about Ridgeview."

Marissa was quiet.

"Ridgeview?"

"Yes."

"I don't know what that means."

"Neither do I."

"I'll ask him after the meeting."

"How is it going?"

Marissa paused.

"Badly."

Claire closed her eyes.

"How badly?"

"Walter produced a forensic consultant who says the login from Ethan's account is consistent with intentional access."

"That's absurd."

"It's incomplete, not necessarily false."

"And the board believes him?"

"Some do."

"Peter?"

"Voting with Walter."

Claire expected it.

It still hurt.

Marissa lowered her voice further.

"I have to go."

"Call me the second it's over."

"I will."

The line ended.

Dana looked at Claire.

"Ridgeview."

"Does that name mean anything to you?"

Dana frowned.

"Maybe."

"What?"

"Ryan once complained that Ethan got credit for Ridgeview even though Walter 'fixed the deal.'"

"When?"

"Years ago."

"What kind of deal?"

"Apartment complex, I think."

Claire opened her laptop.

A public search showed Ridgeview Apartments had been sold by Bennett Development in 2020.

Buyer: Cedar Ridge Restoration.

Claire stared at the screen.

The same buyer in Caroline's ledger.

The same company connected to the failed $1.2 million transfer.

She pulled the deed history.

Six weeks after Cedar Ridge bought Ridgeview, ownership transferred again.

Buyer: North Vale Residential LLC.

The sale price jumped by nearly $3 million.

Claire felt her stomach turn.

"Dana."

"What?"

"Ryan wasn't lying about one thing."

She turned the screen.

"Ethan's signature is on the original Ridgeview sale."

Dana studied it.

"That doesn't mean he knew about the second transfer."

"I know."

Claire zoomed in on the signature page.

Ethan Bennett.

Executive Vice President.

Approved.

Then she noticed the date.

February 14, 2020.

Valentine's Day.

Claire remembered that day clearly because Ethan had been in Denver with her for a prenatal consultation after their first miscarriage.

They had spent the whole morning at a specialist's office.

He had not been at Bennett Development headquarters.

"That's not his signature."

Dana looked at her.

"How do you know?"

Claire pointed at the date.

"Because I know exactly where he was."

Her phone rang again.

This time it was Ethan.

Claire answered.

"What happened?"

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said it.

"They suspended me."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"Eight votes to four."

"Peter?"

"With Dad."

"I found Ridgeview."

Ethan paused.

"What?"

"Ryan told me to ask you about it."

"Ryan called you?"

"Later."

"Claire."

"Ethan, listen."

She kept her voice calm.

"There's a deed with your signature dated February 14, 2020."

Silence.

"You were with me in Denver that day."

Ethan breathed out slowly.

"Yes."

"Did you sign anything electronically?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Absolutely."

Claire looked at the signature again.

"Then someone forged it."

Ethan was quiet.

Then another voice sounded faintly on his end.

Marissa.

"Ethan, you need to see this."

He spoke to Claire again.

"Hold on."

Claire heard movement.

Then Ethan returned.

His voice had changed.

"Claire."

"What?"

"Security found Martin."

She stood too quickly and caught herself on the table.

"Is he okay?"

"Yes."

"Where was he?"

"Inside the building."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"He hid in an unfinished mechanical floor after someone came into his office."

"For four hours?"

"He thought they were looking for him."

"Who?"

Ethan paused.

"Denise Hall."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"Walter's assistant?"

"No."

May you like

Ethan's next words made the room go still.

"Denise was the one who warned him to hide."
