Chapter 10 - The Fire at Archive B

By the time Claire and Ethan returned home from meeting Caroline, Bennett Development was on fire.

Not the entire company.

Not the main office tower.

Archive Building B.

The distinction should have made Claire feel better.

It did not.

The first alert came from Lucas's phone while they were still twenty minutes from the city.

A fire department notification showed smoke rising from an industrial records building owned by Bennett Development.

Ethan leaned forward from the back seat.

"That's our document archive."

Lucas looked at him in the mirror.

"What's stored there?"

"Old project files. Contracts. Closing binders."

Claire felt her stomach drop.

"North Vale years?"

"Some of them."

Ethan immediately called Marissa.

She already knew.

"Nobody goes near the property."

"I'm not planning to fight a fire."

"I mean after."

"Marissa."

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

"Fire investigators will handle the scene."

Ethan looked out the windshield.

"Was anyone inside?"

"One records employee."

Claire's heart jumped.

"Are they okay?"

Marissa answered.

"Smoke exposure only. They're at the hospital."

Claire exhaled.

That mattered more than any paper.

"What started it?"

Ethan asked.

"Unknown."

"Electrical?"

"Unknown."

"Security footage?"

"The exterior system was offline for maintenance."

Lucas swore softly.

Claire stared at him.

"Coincidence?"

"I don't believe in this many."

Marissa continued.

"The server backups are off-site."

Ethan relaxed slightly.

"Good."

"But Archive B held originals for older acquisitions."

"Including Cedar Ridge?"

"Likely."

The call ended.

Claire looked at Ethan.

"Someone knew what Caroline was about to tell us."

"Maybe."

"There it is again."

"I'm not protecting anyone."

"I know."

Claire touched his arm.

"I'm scared of what maybe means now."

He nodded.

They did not go to the fire.

Detective Harper called them from the scene two hours later.

"Initial signs are suspicious."

Ethan sat at the kitchen table.

"How suspicious?"

"A side door was forced."

"Before or after the fire?"

"Before, according to preliminary evidence."

"Accelerant?"

"Too early to say."

"Any cameras nearby?"

"One city traffic camera and a gas station across the street."

Lucas asked the question everyone was thinking.

"Black SUV?"

Harper paused.

"Why do you ask?"

They told her about the vehicle at the diner.

"Send me the time and location."

Harper's tone sharpened.

"Now."

Lucas did.

Claire paced slowly between the kitchen and living room.

Her body felt tired, but her mind would not slow down.

Caroline had left the diner in an unmarked police car.

Harper had arranged a safe location for her.

The blue ledger had been taken into evidence.

The original documents Caroline claimed were hidden at Cedar House remained where she had left them.

She refused to disclose the exact location over the phone.

"If someone is leaking information, Harper can't tell the whole department where she is."

Claire said it aloud.

Ethan looked at her.

"She knows."

"What if the leak isn't police?"

"Who else knew about Caroline?"

They began listing names.

Claire.

Ethan.

Lucas.

Marissa.

Detective Harper.

Caroline herself.

Dana knew they were meeting a source but not the location.

Lily knew even less.

Megan did not know about Caroline at all.

Priya's forensic team knew the initials C.R., but not Caroline's identity.

"Marissa?"

Claire hated saying it.

Ethan shook his head immediately.

"No."

"You trust her?"

"Completely."

Claire heard Caroline's question in her head.

You trust him?

Trust was becoming a dangerous currency.

"Lucas?"

Ethan asked.

Claire looked toward the back patio, where Lucas was speaking with the security contractor.

"Yes."

"Harper?"

"I don't know her well enough."

"Neither do I."

Claire sat down.

"Then maybe Caroline was followed before she contacted us."

"Possible."

"Or her old source inside Bennett Development is compromised."

Ethan's expression sharpened.

"That makes more sense."

"Who is it?"

"She wouldn't tell us."

Dana found an old Bennett Development annual report in Claire's home office while looking for a charger.

She brought it into the kitchen because the cover showed Archive Building B behind the company's headquarters.

"That's the place that burned?"

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

Dana flipped through the report.

"Ryan used to hate this picture."

Claire looked at her.

"Why?"

"He said Archive B was where Dad kept things he wanted to forget but couldn't destroy."

Ethan frowned.

"When did he say that?"

"Years ago."

"Exact words?"

"Pretty close."

Dana searched her memory.

"We were at a company picnic. Ryan complained that your father never deleted anything because he liked having leverage."

Claire looked toward the smoke footage still frozen on the television.

"Then why burn it now?"

Ethan answered slowly.

"Because leverage is useful only while you control who sees it."

The thought changed the meaning of the fire.

Maybe someone was not simply destroying proof.

Maybe they were destroying Walter's old insurance files before investigators could turn them against him.

Claire opened the annual report to the executive roster.

Walter.

Ethan.

Peter.

Martin Blake.

Denise Hall appeared in a staff photograph behind Walter, almost hidden at the edge of the frame.

Claire pointed.

"She has been beside him forever."

"Twenty years."

Ethan said.

"Long enough to know where every document went."

"And every password."

Claire looked at him.

That possibility had barely settled when his phone rang.

His phone rang.

Martin Blake, Bennett Development's CFO.

Ethan stared at the name.

Claire felt a chill.

"Answer it."

He put the call on speaker.

"Martin."

The CFO sounded breathless.

"Ethan, I need to talk to you."

"I'm listening."

"Not on the phone."

Ethan looked at Claire.

"Why?"

"Because I think my office is being monitored."

Nobody spoke.

Martin continued.

"I found something in the server logs."

"What?"

"The login that used your credentials didn't originate from Ryan's house."

"Where?"

"The executive floor."

Ethan stood.

"At headquarters?"

"Yes."

"Whose workstation?"

Martin took a breath.

"Walter's assistant."

Claire looked at Ethan.

Walter had an assistant named Denise Hall who had worked for him for almost twenty years.

Quiet.

Efficient.

Invisible in the way people became invisible when everyone assumed they were merely arranging calendars.

"Did Denise do it?"

Ethan asked.

"I don't know."

"Where is she?"

"She hasn't come to work since the morning after the staircase incident."

"Did she call in sick?"

"Walter said she was taking personal leave."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Martin."

She spoke toward the phone.

"Do you know Caroline Reed?"

Silence.

Longer than any technical delay.

Then Martin answered.

"Why are you asking me that?"

Claire looked at Ethan.

"Because she contacted us."

Martin exhaled.

"Where is she?"

"Safe."

Claire deliberately gave no details.

"Did you know she was still collecting records?"

Another silence.

Then Martin said the sentence none of them expected.

"I'm the one who was sending them to her."

Ethan stared at the phone.

"You?"

"Since 2021."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know if I could trust you."

The words landed hard.

Martin continued before Ethan could answer.

"Your initials were in the ledger."

"I know that now."

"Walter controlled your accounts."

"I know that now too."

"Then you understand why I waited."

Ethan sat down slowly.

"Why call today?"

"Because Archive B burned."

"And?"

"Because I was there last night."

Claire stared at the phone.

"Why?"

"I went to pull the original Cedar Ridge closing files before Walter could get them."

"Did you?"

"Yes."

"Where are they?"

"Not with me."

"Then where?"

Martin lowered his voice.

"I put them somewhere Walter can't reach."

Ethan looked at Claire.

"Cedar House?"

Martin went silent.

Claire's skin prickled.

"You know about Cedar House."

"Caroline told you."

"Yes."

"Then listen carefully."

Martin's voice was suddenly urgent.

"Do not go there."

"Why?"

"Because Walter knows about it too."

A loud sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Martin stopped speaking.

"Martin?"

Ethan said.

No answer.

Another sound.

Footsteps.

Then Martin whispered.

"Someone's in my office."

The call disconnected.

Ethan immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Lucas came in from the patio as Ethan dialed a third time.

"What happened?"

"Martin Blake just said someone entered his office."

Lucas grabbed his keys.

"Call Harper."

Claire did.

Within minutes, officers were headed to Bennett Development headquarters.

They found Martin's office unlocked.

His laptop remained on the desk.

His coffee was still warm.

His car was still in the garage.

Martin Blake was gone.

On his monitor, one document remained open.

It was an email draft addressed to Ethan.

The message contained only one line.

THE PERSON YOU NEED TO FEAR IS NOT RYAN.

Harper's team stayed inside Martin's office for nearly two hours after his disappearance was reported.

They found no sign of a struggle.

That was reassuring only until they found the small things.

A second coffee cup in the trash.

A chair moved away from the visitor side of the desk.

A sticky note torn in half.

On the surviving half were three handwritten characters.

D.H.

Claire saw the evidence photographs later.

"Denise Hall."

Ethan said it immediately.

Harper corrected him.

"Initials are not identity."

"I know."

"You say that faster now."

"I'm learning."

The other discovery was a printed copy of the Archive B access schedule.

Martin's name appeared beside a handwritten time.

11:30 PM.

The night before the fire.

Someone had circled it in red.

Claire stared at the page.

"So somebody knew he went there."

"Possibly."

Harper looked at Ethan before he could complain about the word.

"The building uses badge logs. It may not be sinister."

"Then why print it and circle his name?"

"That is exactly what we are trying to learn."

Claire looked at Martin's open email draft again.

THE PERSON YOU NEED TO FEAR IS NOT RYAN.

It had no punctuation.

No explanation.

No saved recipient timestamp.

"Was he warning Ethan about Walter?"

Claire asked.

Harper closed the evidence folder.

"That is one interpretation."

"Or someone else."

"Yes."

Claire thought about Peter.

Denise.

The unknown Harlan who had not yet surfaced.

Even Martin himself.

Every new name widened the circle.

That afternoon, company employees began calling Ethan directly despite Walter's order that all communications go through the chairman's office.

A project manager wanted to know whether payroll was safe.

An accountant asked whether she should preserve personal copies of emails.

A superintendent from a hospital construction site asked whether the family fight would stop material deliveries.

Ethan answered the same way each time.

"Keep doing your job. Preserve records. Do not delete anything."

Claire listened.

The calls changed his posture.

For the first time, Bennett Development stopped being an abstract inheritance in his mind.

It became eight hundred employees who had nothing to do with Walter's schemes.

"This is why I can't just burn it all down."

Ethan said after the seventh call.

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"Dad keeps saying exposure destroys the company."

"Maybe hiding it destroys the company slower."

Ethan looked at her.

"That may be the difference."

May you like

The board fight was no longer only about who controlled a family asset.

It was about whether hundreds of people would be forced to pay for secrets they never agreed to keep.
