Chapter 6 - Airplane Mode

The black phone sat in the center of Claire and Ethan's kitchen like a live wire nobody wanted to touch.

Its screen had gone dark.

The remote erase request was still waiting somewhere behind that black glass.

Lucas placed the device inside a signal-blocking pouch from his security kit.

Dana watched him seal it.

"You just happen to carry one of those?"

Lucas shrugged.

"Construction security gets strange."

Lily sat at the far end of the table with her arms folded tightly across her chest.

She had stopped looking like a teenager who had borrowed something from her father's desk.

She looked like someone who had finally understood that the adults around her had been keeping dangerous secrets.

Claire lowered herself carefully into a chair beside her.

"You did something brave."

Lily looked at the sealed pouch.

"Mom says I should've told her first."

Dana closed her eyes.

"I said I wish you had told me first."

"That's basically the same thing."

"It is not."

Claire touched Lily's wrist.

"Both can be true."

Lily looked at her.

"I shouldn't have taken the phone."

"Probably not."

"But I'm glad I did."

Claire nodded.

"So am I."

Ethan stood at the kitchen counter on another call with Marissa.

His voice had become clipped and businesslike.

Claire knew that tone.

He used it when emotion was too big to carry openly.

"Yes."

He listened.

"No, nobody opened the messages."

Another pause.

"The preview from my father showed on the lock screen."

He listened again.

"Fine."

He ended the call.

"Forensics is fifteen minutes away."

Dana looked up.

"Will they be able to read everything?"

"If the phone isn't encrypted beyond what they can access."

"It opened with the code."

"That helps."

Dana rubbed both hands over her face.

"I keep thinking about how many times he sat across from me at dinner with that phone in his pocket."

Claire understood the feeling.

Betrayal rarely arrived as one dramatic revelation.

It arrived as a hundred ordinary memories suddenly changing meaning.

The late work calls.

The locked office door.

The new password.

The missing receipt.

The way someone turned a screen away when you entered the room.

Dana looked at Ethan.

"Did Ryan ever ask you for your company password?"

"Not directly."

"Did your father?"

"No."

"Then how did someone use your credentials?"

Ethan walked back to the table.

"We use single sign-on with multifactor authentication."

Claire frowned.

"English."

"A password alone shouldn't have been enough."

"So whoever logged in also needed your second verification."

"Yes."

Dana's eyes narrowed.

"Your old work tablet."

Ethan looked at her.

"What about it?"

"The one you gave Ryan last Christmas."

He went still.

Claire remembered now.

Ethan had upgraded to a newer tablet and offered the old one to Ryan because Ryan said he wanted it for construction drawings.

"It was wiped."

Ethan spoke slowly.

"I reset it myself."

Dana shook her head.

"Ryan took it to the company tech desk afterward."

"Why?"

"He said the drawing software wouldn't install."

Ethan's face changed.

"If IT re-enrolled it under the company profile, it could have been trusted again."

Lucas looked over.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning if someone had my password and a device our system recognized, they might get past the second step."

Claire felt anger rise through her fear.

"Your brother used a Christmas present to set you up?"

Ethan looked at the floor.

"Maybe."

"Stop saying maybe like you're protecting him."

He looked at her sharply.

Claire did not back down.

"I know you need proof."

Her voice softened.

"But you also need to stop giving him the benefit of every doubt while he gives you none."

Ethan sat across from her.

"You're right."

It was not defensive.

That made Claire's anger dissolve faster than she expected.

The doorbell camera chimed.

Lucas checked the feed before opening the door.

A woman in a dark green jacket stood outside carrying two hard equipment cases.

Behind her was a younger man with a laptop bag.

Marissa had sent a digital forensics team from a firm called Grayline Response.

The lead examiner introduced herself as Priya Shah.

She explained the process in plain terms.

They would photograph the device.

Document the condition.

Create a forensic copy if possible.

Preserve the original.

Avoid reconnecting it to any network.

"Can the erase request still work?"

Lily asked.

Priya looked at her.

"Not while it's isolated."

"What if the battery dies?"

"We'll keep it powered in a shielded environment."

Lily nodded as if she had just been assigned responsibility for the moon landing.

Priya carried the phone into the dining room, which Lucas temporarily cleared.

For the next hour, nobody touched it except the forensic team.

Claire tried to rest on the sofa.

She lasted seven minutes.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Megan.

DAD IS CALLING EVERYONE.

Claire typed back.

About what?

Megan replied.

HE'S SAYING ETHAN IS TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE COMPANY WHILE YOU USE THE FALL TO TURN EVERYONE AGAINST RYAN.

Claire stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

AUNT SUSAN BELIEVES HIM.

Then another.

PETER IS SAYING THE VIDEO WAS EDITED.

Claire laughed out loud.

Ethan looked over from the kitchen.

"What?"

"Apparently Noah has become a Hollywood visual-effects department overnight."

She handed him the phone.

His mouth tightened.

"Dad is getting ahead of the story."

"Because he knows something worse is coming."

"Probably."

Claire looked at him.

"Call Megan."

"Why?"

"Tell her not to argue with anyone."

"That's your advice?"

"People who already decided a ten-year-old fabricated a video don't want facts."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"Save the facts for people who can subpoena them."

"Exactly."

He called Megan.

Claire closed her eyes and rested one hand over her stomach.

The baby shifted beneath her palm.

She whispered without thinking.

"We're going to get through this."

The words were for the baby.

They were also for herself.

Two hours later, Priya asked everyone except Ethan and Dana to step into the dining room.

Claire refused to stay out.

"I'm part of this."

Priya considered her for half a second.

"Fine."

Lucas joined them but remained near the doorway.

The black phone lay inside an isolation enclosure connected to forensic equipment.

Priya had created a copy.

The original remained sealed from outside signals.

"We have enough to tell you some things."

Ethan sat forward.

"Go ahead."

"The phone has three encrypted messaging applications."

Priya turned her laptop so they could see.

"Two appear to contain mostly deleted conversations."

Dana frowned.

"Deleted means gone?"

"Not necessarily."

"Can you recover them?"

"Some."

Priya clicked a folder.

"The third application has an active conversation between Ryan and a contact saved as W."

Claire did not need anyone to explain who W probably was.

"Walter?"

"We can't assume identity from a label."

Priya's caution reminded Claire of Marissa.

"But the messages refer to family members by name."

She opened a timeline.

The first visible message was from six days earlier.

W: DID ETHAN SIGN THE TREASURY ACCESS CHANGE?

Ryan: YES. HE DIDN'T READ THE DEVICE LIST.

W: GOOD.

Claire looked at Ethan.

He was staring at the screen.

"What treasury access change?"

Priya scrolled.

Another message.

Ryan: THE OLD TABLET STILL WORKS.

W: KEEP IT OFF THE NETWORK UNTIL WE NEED IT.

Ethan's face went white.

Dana whispered.

"Oh my God."

Claire reached for Ethan's hand.

He did not move, but his fingers closed around hers.

Priya continued.

A message from three nights earlier appeared.

W: CEDAR RIDGE MUST LOOK LIKE ETHAN'S IDEA.

Ryan: I CAN USE HIS LOGIN.

W: ONE CLEAN TRANSFER. THEN THE AUDIT POINTS AT HIM TOO.

The room went silent.

Claire felt a chill run over her arms.

The failed $1.2 million transfer had not been random panic after the staircase incident.

It had been planned before Claire ever found the North Vale document.

They had already intended to create evidence against Ethan.

"Keep going."

Ethan's voice was almost flat.

Priya hesitated.

"There's more."

A message timestamped forty minutes before the family dinner appeared.

Ryan: CLAIRE WAS IN THE OFFICE.

W: DID SHE SEE ANYTHING?

Ryan: DON'T KNOW.

W: FIND OUT.

Then another message twelve minutes later.

Ryan: SHE SAW THE NORTH VALE PAGE.

W: GET IT BACK.

Ryan: SHE ALREADY KNOWS SOMETHING IS WRONG.

W: THEN HANDLE YOUR PROBLEM.

Claire stopped breathing for a second.

Dana stared at the words.

Lucas's expression hardened.

Ethan's hand left Claire's and gripped the edge of the table.

"Is that the last message before the fall?"

Priya checked.

"No."

She scrolled one line lower.

Ryan: SHE'S GOING TO TELL ETHAN.

The reply from W had come less than two minutes before Claire was pushed.

W: STOP HER BEFORE SHE DOES.

Claire looked away from the screen.

For the first time since the staircase, she felt physically cold.

The shove had been impulsive.

She had wanted to believe that.

Ugly, reckless, unforgivable, but impulsive.

These messages suggested something else.

Walter had told Ryan to stop her.

Maybe he had not meant violence.

Maybe he had.

Claire no longer knew which possibility was worse.

Dana's chair scraped backward.

"I need air."

She stood and walked into the living room.

Lily followed immediately.

Ethan remained seated.

"Can we use these messages?"

Priya nodded.

"Your attorney will decide how and when."

"Send the preservation report to Marissa."

"Already doing it."

Lucas's phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

"Detective Harper is outside."

Claire looked toward the front door.

The detective entered minutes later.

Rachel Harper was compact, dark-haired, and direct.

She had interviewed Claire briefly at the hospital during the night.

Now she listened while Priya summarized the phone evidence.

Harper asked few questions.

The ones she asked were precise.

Who physically possessed the phone?

Who unlocked it?

Who turned on airplane mode?

Who had access to Ethan's old tablet?

When did Walter leave his house?

When did Ryan enter North Vale Storage Park?

Claire watched the detective build a timeline in a small notebook.

Then Harper closed it.

"We have enough for me to request additional warrants."

Ethan leaned forward.

"For N-17?"

"Possibly."

"How fast?"

"As fast as a judge signs it."

Lucas looked at her.

"Someone could move the contents."

"Then nobody here goes near it."

Harper's eyes moved around the room.

"Understood?"

Ethan nodded.

Claire nodded too.

Harper stood.

"One more thing."

She looked at Claire.

"Ryan contacted our department through an attorney this morning."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"He wants to make a statement about the staircase."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Now?"

Harper continued.

"His attorney says Ryan intends to claim you threatened to expose false accusations about the company and then intentionally threw yourself backward during an argument."

Claire stared at her.

"He says I threw myself down the stairs?"

"That's the position they've communicated."

Ethan stood so fast his chair nearly fell.

Harper raised one hand.

"Don't contact him."

"I wasn't going to."

Claire looked at him.

He corrected himself.

"Not anymore."

Harper almost smiled.

"Good."

She turned toward the door.

"The video matters."

Noah's twenty-three seconds had already proven the basic lie.

Now Ryan's second phone was proving why he needed that lie.

As Harper left, Priya called Ethan back to the laptop.

"There's one more item you should see."

She opened the phone's notes application.

A locked note had been recovered from deleted data.

The title was simple.

IF ETHAN REFUSES.

Below it was a list.

USE CEDAR RIDGE.

MOVE 1.2M.

ACCESS THROUGH OLD TABLET.

DELETE LOGIN LOGS.

MAKE DANA SIGN.

Then the final line.

IF CLAIRE KNOWS, DEAL WITH HER FIRST.

Ethan stared at the words.

Claire rested a hand on his shoulder.

Neither of them spoke.

They did not need to.

For the first time, the family drama at the staircase looked less like the beginning of the story.

It looked like the moment a much older plan had finally become visible.
