CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Lost Everything

CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Lost Everything

Damian sat silently across from Elena’s desk.

For the first time in years, he had no argument.

No prepared speech.

No carefully chosen words designed to control the room.

He had always been good at winning conversations.

He knew how to intimidate people.

He knew how to make executives doubt themselves.

He knew how to turn criticism into admiration.

But sitting in front of Elena, none of those skills mattered.

Because she knew every version of him.

The confident businessman.

The ambitious leader.

The arrogant man behind closed doors.

She had seen it all.

“You knew?” Damian finally asked.

Elena looked at him.

“Knew what?”

“That everything would fall apart.”

She didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence bothered him more than anything.

Because Damian was used to immediate responses.

People usually rushed to explain themselves to him.

Elena never did.

“I knew the foundation was unstable,” she said.

“But I didn’t know when it would collapse.”

Damian looked down.

“And you just watched?”

Elena’s expression remained calm.

“I tried to warn you.”

“When?”

“Multiple times.”

She opened another folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Financial reports.

Meeting notes.

Damian recognized them immediately.

His own signature was on several documents.

“You ignored every warning,” Elena said.

“You believed anyone who disagreed with you was against you.”

Damian swallowed.

Because he remembered.

Every time someone questioned his decisions, he assumed they lacked vision.

Every time an advisor suggested caution, he called them afraid.

Every time Elena tried to discuss risks, he changed the subject.

He had convinced himself he was surrounded by people who didn’t understand greatness.

The truth was worse.

They understood the danger.

He didn’t.

Outside Elena’s office, Veronica paced nervously.

She had been waiting for nearly an hour.

The confidence she once carried had disappeared.

The expensive designer clothes.

The perfect makeup.

The carefully created image.

None of it helped now.

Because she had always believed Damian’s power protected her.

She never imagined that power could disappear overnight.

A receptionist approached her.

“Ms. Lane?”

Veronica looked up.

“Yes?”

“Your accounts connected to Blackwood Enterprises have been frozen pending review.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

The receptionist remained professional.

“You’ll need to speak with legal counsel.”

Veronica stared at her.

“This is a mistake.”

The receptionist said nothing.

Because everyone knew what Veronica refused to accept.

She had chosen her side.

And now that side had fallen.

Inside the office, Damian stood up.

“So what happens now?”

Elena looked at him.

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“On whether you finally understand.”

Damian frowned.

“Understand what?”

“That losing power doesn’t make you a victim.”

Her words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

“It reveals who you were when you had it.”

Damian looked away.

He hated hearing that.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was accurate.

For years, he had measured people by what they could give him.

Connections.

Money.

Influence.

Status.

And when someone no longer served a purpose, he discarded them.

Just like he tried to discard Elena.

A knock interrupted the room.

Richard entered.

“Ms. Voss, the board meeting is ready.”

Elena nodded.

Then Richard looked at Damian.

“The board has one question.”

Damian stared.

“What question?”

Richard handed Elena a document.

“They want to know whether you intend to remove him completely.”

Damian held his breath.

Because he knew the answer could end everything.

Elena looked at the paper.

Then she looked at Damian.

A year ago, she might have hesitated.

But that woman no longer existed.

The woman standing there was someone who had spent years building an empire quietly.

Someone who understood that mercy without accountability only created more damage.

“Tell the board,” Elena said.

Richard waited.

“That Damian Blackwood will no longer control any company under Voss Global Holdings.”

Damian closed his eyes.

The final confirmation.

Then Elena continued.

“But…”

Everyone looked at her.

“I am not interested in destroying his life.”

Damian opened his eyes.

Confusion crossed his face.

“Why?”

Elena picked up her handbag.

“Because destruction is easy.”

She walked toward the door.

“Building something better is harder.”

Damian watched her leave.

For the first time, he saw something he had missed for years.

Elena wasn’t powerful because she could take everything away.

She was powerful because she had the ability to rebuild after everything was gone.

That evening, Damian returned to his mansion.

The place that once represented success now felt like a museum of his mistakes.

He walked through the empty halls.

The trophies.

The awards.

The photographs.

All reminders of a life built on an illusion.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Blackwood, we need to discuss your remaining assets.”

Damian looked around.

“My remaining assets?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

The man continued.

“There are very few left.”

Damian slowly sat down.

For years, he thought losing money would be the worst thing that could happen.

He was wrong.

The worst part was realizing how many people only stayed because of what he owned.

And now that everything was gone…

He had to face the person underneath it all.

May you like

The person he had ignored for years.

Himself.
