Daniel's world continued to change.
Not all at once.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
The same way Emma's had once unraveled.
Several executives left the company.
Not because of the divorce.
Because they began paying closer attention to how people were treated.
Human Resources introduced leadership training.
Anonymous employee surveys revealed patterns no one had wanted to discuss before.
Daniel wasn't accused of crimes.
He wasn't publicly disgraced.
He simply discovered that respect couldn't be demanded forever.
It had to be deserved.
One afternoon, he asked to meet Emma.
She agreed.
They sat across from one another in a quiet café.
Neither raised their voice.
Neither argued.
After a long silence, Daniel finally spoke.
"I thought providing everything meant I was a good husband."
Emma looked at him gently.
"You provided comfort."
She paused.
"I needed kindness."
He lowered his eyes.
"I don't know if I ever understood the difference."
Emma believed him.
Understanding, however, did not erase consequences.
When the check arrived, they both reached for it.
Then they laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh they had shared in years.
Not because they were becoming friends.
Because neither of them was pretending anymore.
When they stood to leave, Daniel quietly said,
"I really am sorry."
Emma nodded.
"I know."
She walked away.
